One of the many tales at a lunch I had with Rod in mid-90's was how he was going to do The War Wagon with the Duke (a while before they did The Trainrobbers), only Kirk Douglas pulled the carpet under him doing it for no fee and just a percentage of profits.

Where’s all the money now? In the assets and accounts of right wing billionaires who buy media so people don’t even know they are being conned. Joh would have pocketed plenty of kickbacks but did Queensland, or Australia, get any sovereign wealth from all this exploitative nonsense? Of course not. I’m not particularly left wing but this corruption and ripoff of wealth that belongs to locals boils my beans.

The time machine was played on our last day of school when i was eighteen about 72. I can remember it now and the smell of the reels of machinery which smelt like fresh tar. Seeing fifty odd years later i thought how incredible it was apart from the funny beings at the end but it was a long time ago.😊

The beings at the end were strange in the Time Machine for that time in 1960s. But the concept overall was fascinating to me. I must of been about 12 or 13 when I first saw it. I was 19 in 1972.

I was a big fan of Rod from the TV series "Hong Kong" (1960-61). Rod played a fearless foreign correspondent named Glenn Evans. Glenn's best friend was Chief inspector Neil Campbell (Lloyd Bochner). Rod was superb in all facets of the role which included terrific fist fights and romancing the likes of Inger Stevens, Suzanne Pleshette, Felicia Farr, Bethel Leslie, and Joanna Moore. I wish Rod had talked about "Hong Kong" in the interview. I'd also like to know how he got the lead in "The Birds" less than two years after "Hong Kong". He wasn't a name star. Nobody knew who he was except his fans like me from "Hong Kong". You'd think Hitchcock would have attracted a much bigger name than Rod. I wonder what appealed to Hitch about Rod. I wonder who Rod beat out for the role of Mitch. I would have expected the film to have starred someone like Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, George Peppard, Cliff Robertson, Stuart Whitman, Anthony Perkins, Rock Hudson, or James Garner. But as a big fan I was thrilled Rod got the role. I guess part of the problem was that Tippi Hedren's role may have appeared much more important than Mitch. Maybe Hitch was a fan of "Hong Kong". Rod still looks great in this interview and seems to have good energy and a good memory. I'm guessing he was around 70, which is still pretty young. Rod worked with beautiful Suzanne Pleshette at least three times: "Hong Kong", "The Birds", and "Fate is the Hunter". Rod had one of the great fight scenes with William Smith in "Darker Than Amber", where Rod played investigtor Travis McGee. Viewers of "Hong Kong" knew Rod was a great fighter. Rod boxed in the Australian navy, so he could fight in real life. Travis McGee might have been a good TV role for Rod, perhaps on the Mystery Movie with Columbo. Thanks for posting this delightful interview.

Rod Taylor had everything, I don't think he did a bad film and every film he was in he put his own stamp on it. In some ways it's good he did not become top table as that would have effected his naturalness. The Time machine is in my top 3 favourite films, a masterpiece and if you have read the book, the mental scenes you cunger up when reading the book exactly match the film. H G Wells would have been proud. RIP Rod.
