Ivory Coast - Zaouli Mask
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.Год назад
Zaouli dancing masks by the Guro tribe in Ivory Coast. The Zaouli mask was inspired by a girl named “Djela Lou Zaouli”, however, the stories of the origins of the mask are varied and each mask can have its own symbolic history. The uniqueness of Zaouli dance is the fine and sophisticated movement of the legs and the feet.
Sierra Leone - Bundo Female Masks
Просмотров 323Год назад
In most parts of Africa, masks are traditionally from a male prerogative, however among the Mende people and neighboring populations the Bundo Masks are female and they play a crucial role in girls’ puberty rites. In this tiny village, we experienced the exit of these masks, an event that called for the participation of a colorful crowd.

Ivory Coast - Guere Masks
Просмотров 259Год назад
In this region, masks typically start as simple, unadorned objects carved by a male artist. The mask is then handed down through generations with each new wearer adding adornments. According to the We, as each generation adds to the mask, it grows in ritual significance and power. The individual honored with wearing the mask traditionally wears an oversized skirt made of raffia fronds and may c...

Rare and disappearing “Jugglers” performances. Girls’ initiatory juggling is an ancient tradition, now vanishing. This is one of the last villages where it is still practiced.

Mysterious Birdmen of Guinea
Просмотров 247Год назад
Passing through remote Eastern Guinea in West Africa on the TransAfrica Grand Expedition (Morocco to Nigeria), we met the "birdmen", of whom very little is known or documented. Our first encounter happened to be on New Year's Eve and it's definitely one to remember!

Wild horses! Johann I’ve watched your CT video several times and have enjoyed it. Looking forward to seeing more from you. Thank you
Which "thin, winter, windstopper shell" is that?
Mountain Hardwear ...
@@jevanzyl Hey, thanks for responding. I heard "Mountain Hardwear" on the video. Is it a rain shell? I can't imagine anyone sleeping in a rain shell. Or, is it a soft shell with some insulation? Mountain Hardwear currently offers a "Kor AirShell Warm Jacket", which is a soft shell, has some insulation, and they say it is highly breathable, and water resistant: "Active insulation and ultralight weather resistance join forces for cold-weather aerobic performance."
@@JohnSmith-tw2hn Yeah, mne is from 10+ years ago and is not insulated. Probably equivalent to the Kor uninsulated one. I have a Patagonia nano-puff if insulation is needed, but LOVE the uninsulated one if it's a bit nippy in the morning and you just need a thin breathable layer that will not let you overheat (as an insulated one will for me as I run hot).
@@jevanzyl Now I remember the Windstopper jackets from MH. I have one! It's kind of thick and heavy. I probably bought mine somewhere between 2000-2003.
I just came across this post. Where in Sierra Leone was this sacred mask played?
Amazing journey! AZ has lots of epic mountain biking. Thanks for such a nice video.

Why tourists are allowed there? religious and cultural traditions shouldn't be captured as a form of tourism and entertainment shows at least put your stupid phones down, whether it's sunni or sufi. I'm not religious but as a sudanese I found it insulting to see this happening everywhere 👎
Nice job with narration and production. What tent you using?
Loved the detail in your video. I've done the section from Whitefish to the Tetons, and it was nice following along.
Its tough to describe to others what a summer night alone in the Great Basin feels like.
Part 2 2023???
❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉😮😮😊😊❤
Thank! Great job. Very helpful! True meaningful ride you accomplished!
Great video ! Watching now. What did you end up doing re packing up a wet tent? I had that happen just recently , wet inside also with condensation. I plan to carry two dry packs that will go in my larger bike pack going forward one for tent and one for sleeping bag. Just curious what you ended up doing
Wrap wet tent in plastic (could be shopping bag from a store or dry bag). For me, it goes in front handlebar dry bag with sleeping pad & some clothing, so try to separate wet tent from rest. Sleeping bag (for me) goes in seat bag, but I always put in it's own dry bag (same with puffy) and then in the seatbag, which is technically a dry bag too, but not as secure...
@@johannvanzyl5451 great ideas. thanks! Were you a little freaked out by the possibility of brown bears? I really want to do this route as i retired recently but honestly the recent attack in Banff has me nervous
@@raymarks7430 I would not worry too much about bears. The attacks are regrettable of course, but statistically actually very rare, so if you handle food carefully, take basic precautions and carry bear spray, it's a very manageable risk...
@@johannvanzyl5451 thanks again, I've got a hilltops bear bag (hanging) i use backpacking and an air horn...would get bear spray once in Canada.

hi johann! is it possible to ride the trail during mid december-mid january?
This is tourist stuff. You wouldn’t walk out alive if you filmed what happens.
Excellent editing! The still photos were a wonderful addition. By far the best video I've watched on the Divide trail, thank you!
Great video!
Beautiful travel log! Enjoyed your description…. Looking forward to part 2.
Amazing video!! Can’t wait for part 2. My wife and I are actually moving from Idaho to Colorado. Excited to get out your way!
These are likely Mandinka People....
This was far and away the best video on the GDMBR I have watched. The fact the you detailed your days, including interesting places and stops made it extremely engaging and useful. I will be setting off to do the whole route during July and August of this year. Good luck with your second leg.
Thanks Dave. I'm just about to set off in less than 2 weeks from the border NOBO (due to time of year). Trust you have a great adventure in Jul/Aug!
Alberta and British Columbia are provinces not states.
What tires and how did they perform and hold up? Thank you.

That was fantastic!
Amazing
Really enjoyed your vlog, lots of great detail, I will be looking forward to part 2 later this year!
The ancestor
I am a hiker turned backpacker. Thanks for posting this. My question is why bring the regular mtn bike shorts when you have the padded ones? Is this necessary? Seems like excess weight.
I wear very lightweight shorts (gives me pockets) over Pearl Izumi Pro Road padded shorts ... (on rides after this CO Trail one, I only took one pair). Pockets are handy for me to hold phone, etc. and I wore the short on their own in town (on later rides when overnighting in a town). On subsequent rides (like Great Divide) I even flew to Canada in the shorts ...
@@johannvanzyl5451 thanks. Makes sense. I’m doing GDMBR this summer and didn’t think of that. Plus I don’t love looking like a road biker so that must help too.
very well done combination between pictures and video. Very entertaining and I remember fondly some passages, because 5 years ago I also drove the first part to Parshall (Co.)!
Great video, glad I found your channel. Awesome footage, Just subbed. See you on the trail.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Really enjoyed the video.
