I first heard this haunting song in the early 70s from a recording by Judy Collins. I was intrigued by the song and, over time, the legendary Scottish Selkie or Silkie myth...and a strange and provocative one it is.

This beautifully reflective song shares the reminiscence of a young fisherman coming of age as he "hunted for the shoals of herring" in the North Atlantic and other northern fisheries. It was written by Ewan MacColl and first sung on BBC radio in 1960. I personally first sang it around 1970 with my fellow singers and best of friends, Anchorwatch.
