Non celts getting celtic tattoos, same shit.
I think some Polynesian style tattoos is okay but not all..
Japanese tattoos? Hello!? At some point amazing are is amazing story! End of story😊
Been to NZ twice and got tattooed twice, small ones, Māori designed but not intrusive into “their thing”. Did the same thing in Bali. To me getting something not to big is ok but to get a traditional Polynesian piece when I’m not of the heritage would be like identifying as something I’m not.
It's always the scholars and learners who know so much about a topic, yet sometimes totally fail to understand them.
I would believe using human bone for mana, but the chieftains and Royal families remains were VERY VERY hidden, climbers would get to the highest cliffs, and rappel down on ropes, hiding the bones in the cliffs and then cutting their own rope to make sure absolutely no one would ever know where the remains are buried so I highly doubt people were just getting their hands on their bones that often
I learned this from someone born in raised telling the history of the na pali coast
The „Marquesan Cross“ was INVENTED/ designed by Catholic bishop Herve Maria La Cleac‘h in the late 29 th century. Any @ meaning“ other than a cross in a usurped Marquesan style, is pure invention and esoteric conjecture!
Anyone that has a problem with this is doing a cultural appropriation argument, which is very bad. Every culture does stuff from other cultures. You wanted inclusion and cultural diversity, don't complain now.
I feel like as long as you respect the culture and don’t just copy and paste something from google and you do your research on which designs you want and what they mean/represent you should be allowed to get a Polynesian tattoo
As a Samoan born and raised in New Zealand I see a lot of Indians with Samoan / Poly tattoos lol and I’m like hmmm lol but I guess it’s cool
Is it cultural appropriation if someone plays any character of another race? No. It's a character specific costume meant to bring joy to the wearer attempting to cosplay their favorite character, and should be treated as such. The line is drawn at false claims of culture membership when they are not a member of the culture or ethnic group they claim to be in. But Halloween? Nah. If we bend a knee to that, what's next? Can't go salsa dancing bc it's cultural appropriation? Nobody batted an eye at anyone dressing up like captain america in different countries, just sayin 😂
Yeah, how come you guys don’t have real Islanders tattoo artists on your podcast yeah these fake ass tattoo artist that think they know about Polynesian tattoos
It’s all about the money to them
It’s Asian
I’m Chamorro from Guam and these are Yap tattoos. Make sure you do some research before saying where these tattoos are from bro because people will cry about it. Chamorros have no “known” or “no recorded” history of “traditional” tattoos.
But we lived off the land and sea, traveled the ocean and have enough ancient pictographs to create our own the way we want and there ain’t nobody than can say shiiiiiii.
I just got a tattoo today, I’m Puerto Rican and American (black). Us Americans get roses, skulls or anything with triangles and more sometimes I wish I had Polynesian tattoos or Samoan tattoos or Hawaiian tattoos. I really like them 😂❣️
Can filipinos get polynesian tattoos?
They could but why not get a Filipino tattoo? There is a big difference
@ but both are austronesian
But it's ok for all non whites to use planes, trains and automobiles???
Those tattoos started in the Philippines and spread to Polynesia
Tattoos started in Indonesia. Nothing starts in the Philippines 😂
My grandfather was half native Hawaiian, and he was raised in WA, but I believe born in Hawaii. I am trying to learn more about the culture and history, and want to know more about the patterns. Do you have any resources you recommend?
here in nz every tribe will have there own opinion me personally as a maori i would have to say as long as he or she aint getting it on there face algoods anywhere else as long as that person upholds and respect the tattoo coz the designs are ancient designs from way back but other then that i dont have a problem with it
Yea its a placebo effect sometimes
Keep going Brother , believe it or not , you Know more than My People who are part of the culture. im Very proud of you For learning the most DISICPLINE PATTERNS OF ALL LIFE FORMS ..
Bro I got a tat while a lil sick
Nothing wrong with it I'm a Maori boy New Zealand ❤
I don't see any issues if you are non poly getting a poly tattoo,if you are interested in the poly art.there is no difference if you're a poly and wanting a European or other cultures tattoo.is every individual's choice.
Note: the helm of awe, is a Christian symbol, it was not a pagan Scandinavian symbol, not even appearing till long after the end of the pagan era. Anyone can get it if they want just understand the real meaning as one wouldn’t want to get something permanently put on themselves that isn’t what they really want.
I'm not a fan of non-polynesians getting our markings. They represent our culture, genealogy and ancestors. I'd be interested in who these elders are...
As i was growing up i got meaning less tattoos now i want a cover up. I was looking at tribal tattoos but not catching this podcast Im second guessing myself
Russian here. People from another countries get russian criminal tattoos because they look dope, but it's a very serious symbols in my country. But almost all of russians are okay with it, because we know our tats are cool😅, so come on and stop being so hysterical about your culture - it's for everyone to share, you are not the only ones who discovered tattoo technique or inveted unique patterns, you're also appropriated it from ancestors and another tribes/nations/races
This is the most POOREST 😅😅😅 tattoo of Philippines 🇵🇭😅😅😅 wtf is the meaning of that shit????
😂😂😂😂😂, fake wanna be warriors 🧐🤣🤣😜😜🖖🏻😎👌🏻🇵🇭 i always laughing about this crossbreed people 😜 talking about tattoos Your not even part of that TRIBE 🤡🔫
Come on now as a black man people been ripping our culture for the longest, everyday over herein America, I'm going to get me one one day, the work is absolutely beautiful and story telling
Hi guys, The Samoan culture is a little bit different than all of Polynesian. Our tattoo or tatau have different pattern that we can tell if you’re from royalty line or what tribal or family you from. Many people don’t know that, it is very important to the Samoan culture to know your lineage through your tattoo. Nowadays, anybody can put on a a Samoan design because they like how it looks, but they have no idea what they have on and what bloodline you from, if there is a war to eliminate a certain tribal then whoever have that designed on will eliminated. The Samoan tattoo or tatau are secret to the Samoan people.
I think everyone should be proud of there own culture no matter what it is.. everybody should be proud of who they are and where they originate... im maori with maori tatts. i love samoan culture and tongan culture, but out of respect for them i leave there tattoos for thm. Its a coming of age thing, a proud milestone moment. And i feel that sacredness is not ment for me. Which makes me more proud to embrace my own culture, and represent my Tupuna Tapu... but each to there own... Nga mihi whanau
I’m half poly half Latina and it sad to see diff cultures including my own for putting down others for wanting something on their body that has nothing to do with them, it shouldn’t matter your ethnicity culture or be questioned about your connections to why you want a tattoo .. as long as your doing it with purpose and know your personal connections then it should not matter ❤ Aloha
Filipinos, Indonesian, Malay, Hawaiian and Maori, etc. They are all Austronesian people with original homeland in Taiwan. This is not a maybe, it's an absolute scientific fact, proven by linguistics, archaeology and DNA. Taiwan aboriginals have a face tattoo tradition.
Fact is the first Filipinos werent even Austronesians aka Aetas. The truth is the Philippines is known as the melting pot of Asia because Filipinos are such a mixed people. Some are Black, some look Chinese, etc.
Se ai kae ia okou ma lou kala pepelo! 😂
Can we get the link for that book?
😂😂😂 talking about yap tattoos 😂😂 you don't even know what it means 😂😂
I want to get a Polynesian tribal tattoo but I don’t know how to ask for the Tattoo Do i have to do more research and show them what I want ? My dad has one but I don’t talk to him
your full of it bros,,, you tatted up fullas, then got tha bullshite Elder chat to suite....Just Shuddup boy
YALL get whatever yall want tatted just b careful w them Aztec ones if you ever end up in county or anything
The information presented here is very vague and doesn’t provide cultural context or real explanation for the motifs. What steps are you taking to prevent perpetuation of misinformation and appropriation of traditional motifs?
Just came back from Hawaii , I got got to meet and receive a chest and shoulder piece done traditionally , we did the full on Hawaiian old school ceremony so the outfit + the lava drink + Hawaiian prayer done by hand not machine was an amazing experience in my life a big meaningful one and the artist and his assistant were extremely happy with my reaction and my vibe , and now we keep in touch amazing amazing amazing
How did you find an artist? Also how long do you recommend staying in Hawaii
Filipino is Asian
Its kinda cringe ngl. Because thats how we identify eachother. Seen some white dude with maori tattoos and i was like hey bro are you maori? Where you from? And he was american and didnt even know where the tat came from like bruh wtf. Or the american dude who got a women maori tattoo on his chin😂
Theres levels to it
A lot of americans have a huge issue with cultural appropriation. Most people from everywhere enjoy when you show love for their culture as long as you are not making fun of it.
No haole should have a Kanaka Maoli Kakau period if they respect our culture you can do without the kakau. Period.
