Happy Christmas from the Roscommon People
Thanks Sean, that is interesting. When I was a school boy visiting Ireland 50 years ago I would land in Elphin from Dublin and it was great to hear the distinctive country accent. Some people even then had much stronger accents than others mind you. Over the years , like you I have noticed that accent become fainter amongst younger people . That is a pity I think. In England too accents have changed, particularly the old upper class accent . If you listen to the young royals who sound very different to Prince Charles and especially the late Queen Elizabeth. The old 'posh' accent is now only spoken by people over about 70. In the U S younger people now do a quite croaky voice with little jerky upward inflections and this is all over America so I am told . But I am sad at the thought of the old west of Ireland and in particular County Roscommon speech disappearing.
I wonder if many people really went down into that Cave? To see if it really is the Gateway to Hell? And if Hell is down there then it's one of the signs of proof. That Religion was truly real.
Looking forward to being there tomorrow
🥰 ❤
He's now a candidate for Indepdenent Ireland for the EU Parliament elections.
Legend
Balladreen should be pronounced, and used to be by everybody, NallaghaDERReen.
I find it interesting that here and elsewhere , young people in Ireland ,Roscommon in particular, have different accents to the older people.
@@johnmulvey5121I think that is the case everywhere but that part of the country more than most. I 5hink they are too anxious to seek the approval of others, to the extent of accepting the pronunciation of strangers for their own town, even when it makes no sense etymologically - how would anyone stress the last syllable in Connaught? Munster perhaps, Skibbereen. I wonder who started it. I think it is accepted that woman particularly imitate what they perceive to be socially superior speech.
@@johnmulvey5121I came here in 87 and a couple of years later ai listened to a radio quiz for schoolgirls from 4 different parts of the country, including Dublin, Cork and Roscommon. The Cork girls had their own accent but all of the others sounded exactly the same.
I am visiting Ireland in late June....my Great Grandparents are Michael Lyons and Bridget Flynn....they were married in the RC Chapel of Granlahan in Castlerea.....is anyone familiar with the family names and/or the church?? They were married in February of 1876.....
Roscommon club's have a bad record in finals
My ancestory is from Castlerea. My great grandfather was Patrick Feeley who fled the British around the turn of the 20th century along with his brother Mike. Their father Terrance had been hanged by the British and so they were on the run and found their way to America. Anyway, that's ultimately how I came to be born. My Grandfather Edward went back in the 60s to visit the old homestead in Cadtlerea and I have thought about the town ever since my childhood.
Beautiful young lady with endless talent..so modest, down to earth ..with all the success she still remains humble and down earth...total inspiration for all...what a genuine spirit!!!
Can't beleive this just popped up on my phone, my mum was born in Roscommon on a farm near to a little village called Tulsk. We came over from the UK when I was 14 years old I'm 65 now and I rememeber visiting Castlerea.

Why are there no representatives of other nationalities or communities in this video? It’s mostly white men? Where’s the integration at every level in the community? It would be good to see that if it really is there. Good luck with it all.
