Sprinter Rooftop Air Conditioning Water Leak Repair
Excellent video thank you!
Bro where are your safety glasses your cutting steel if it gets into your eye it will hurt
I was wearing my squinties 👍
Just spent way too long trying to bite all the way through before resorting to RUclips. Grateful I admitted defeat before I broke something.
Did you make video on installation of glass?
Excellent video thank you! Quick question, do you remember what brand / size of window tape you used for the install?
Fantastic. This saved my ass. Thank you so much for such a detailed tutorial!
You bet, thanks!
Love how the sparks are shooting out of the vacuum attachment like fireworks
Yeah funny story, totally forgot to take the bag off before starting. Melted right through it.
@@mctag123 Did it take out the back window? I screwed up once with sparks and lets just say the windshield in my old boat was never the same!
@@jagboy69 lol it did not
NO ear protection??! RIP to his ears. He's Probably deaf now.
Using a saw isn’t going to make you go deaf dude
Great idea! I like extra personal safety equipment additions such as hearing protection, full face shield with the safety glasses.
No harm in that, safety first!
Looks easier but maybe use a welding helmet?
Hi Tim, Hope your doing swell! I haven't got past step 9. I understand every step except for step 9 because doesn't the ac need to be drained. Won't those two pipes erupt or something? What do you think? Thank you very much.
yes, right in the beginning of the video, 10 seconds in I explain to have the AC system drained. Good luck with your repair!
@@mctag123 oh, OK. I missed that. Thank you
Great ideas 💡
Dand how many angles you got on your property that's alot of rebar
20 acres every 100’
Or just a saw zaw
Weird question and off topic..but what type of boots are you using?
Danner pronghorn 8” 👍
Hi,friend.I am a seller on Amazon selling electric rebar cutter and bender. And we are looking for reviewers in the USA for the tool. Free sample will be provided for you to test. May I contact you further about the detail?
Luo Anne thanks but I’m not a good candidate for you. I’m just a home owner and have little need for a rebar cutter
@@mctag123 May I have your email address? I also have some other product for you to review. Thank you for your reply.
You're going to have pits burned in the paint on your truck!
My vent window slid out of the frame on my 68 ford while replacing the weather striping. I am at a lose on what to use to put the window back into the frame? Any ideas. Thank you
It’s called glass setting tape. It comes in different thicknesses so you will need to find the the proper size for your application. Remove the frame and clean it out before using otherwise it will not seat properly. Window tape is old school, many glass shops don’t use it any longer. You can still buy it online, and if you have any classic restorers around, they should have some. Good luck
@@mctag123 awesome thanks for the advice
I'm willing to pay. Is there anyone who can do this for me? I'm too old to get on the roof.
I’m sure you can take this video in to any auto repair shop and show them what you need done. Just stay away from Mercedes, they won’t do it.
Thanks! Saved me from going out and buying an angle grinder.
Thank you for the video. Your the only one helping us poor chaps with sprinter rear a/c leaks. I think once I take mine off thanks to you. I won't even put it back. You think I could sell it?
Andras Kovacs i considered the same, and heck yea you can sell it.
@@mctag123 Thanks for the vote of confidence. I will work on it, but if I was to fix it. You didn't mention the type of caulking. Was it liquid nails or some special type of marine sealant? Thanks Tim.
Andras Kovacs i did show what i used... 3rd or 4th slide. Don’t know if it’s the best, but mine is still holding
Very nice technique. Will be using it next week. I've got 20 sticks of 1/2in that I'm cutting into 30" sections for a pig fence.
Anonymous Guest I play around with how deep you have to cut it to snap in half… I probably could’ve made shallower cuts and achieved the same results
Anonymous Guest also, helpful hint.... take off the dust collector on your saw. The orange hot shaving blew right through mind and i had to buy a replacement 👍
Thank you for the help!
Have had this issue with every Sprinter w/ a roof mounted A/C we've owned. '14, '15, '17 & '18. Doesn't seem to be an issue they are too concerned w/ fixing....The leak always seems to happen around a year in. Living in Phoenix, we don't get much rain, but the heat seems to degrade the seal rather quickly. All of the repaired seals are still holding up, the oldest repair being done in late '14. Just had another seal give on a '18 model w/ only 11K miles on it and it was during one of the worst storms we've had in a while. Thankfully it was on one of the vinyl interiors, so cleanup wasn't too bad.
I got it all put back together and now I have no cool air. On step 9 when I removed the AC lines and cold air and liquid burst out. Do I need to have someone add more freon to the unit?
Hugo Bastidos sounds like you didn’t get the system emptied before you started?? At any rate, yes, the system needs recharged.... DONT KEEP TRYING TO RUN IT UNTIL YOU DO. I worry you could do damage to the compressor.
Genius. Thank you. Did you rotate the rebar?
Ngoc Bui yes sir
Just learned from the local Mercedes dealership in San Jose, CA that they have extended the AC warranty for my 2014 Sprinter until 2020 or 120K miles. Bringing it in so they can take care of it.
Charlie Bui That’s awesome! Keep this video bookmarked because you’ll be replacing it in 2021… LOL
I have a 2014 Mercedes Sprinter 2500 low roof with 60K that I purchased used a few months ago. I had a similar incident with the rear A/C this past week where the collected rain water hidden inside the A/C unit just spilled out like a waterfall. I opened up as far as I could and clean up the puddle of water that was still on the cover. I stopped short taking everything apart as I want to make sure I know how to put it back. I am glad to find this video, Thanks Tim. Will work on it this weekend hopefully I can at least temporary fix the problem. I have also heard about a class action lawsuit against Mercedes on this same topic. Just wondering is it too late to contact the dealership, since the warranty had expired.
Charlie Bui The last I read that class action lawsuit only applied to people in a particular state… California or Florida if my memory serves correct
Tim Goodrich - I am in Cali. Not sure if the previous owner took any action. will reach out to Mercedes. Thanks Tim.
Charlie did you have to put freon back into unit
So I talked to the MB dealer today, May 20th, 2019 and they said they have had several “fixes” for this problem. Right now it’s a foam gasket, that will set you back $16. I asked him if he felt this solution has worked and he said it seems to. Not as enthusiastic as I had hoped, but the catch is the whole ac unit has to come off to get the gasket on. I still think a bead of silicone promises the longer solution, any thought from people who have tried the bead of silicone?
John MacDonald i thought my silicone repair sprung a small leak after 1 year... turns out to be condensation build-up. So... silicone repair still good after 1 year.
Silicone is the bomb. Working great after massive rainstorms. Happy I did the silicone bit.
I've been looking for this, thanks so much. Side note, I definitely didn't know it had to be emptied, i took off the pipe under the external/outside cover and that stuff spewed everywhere!!!! It smells terrible haha Anyways, do you think it's emptied if i fucked up and a giant mist of who knows what came out for like 10 seconds?
Ziggy Myster yikes! Glad you’re okay and didn’t get burnt
@@mctag123 Same thing happened to me. Do I need to have more freon put in?
Thank you for the video! My 15 2500 now has had this problem twice. The local dealer covered it under warranty the first time, but now I’m SOL... pisses me off that Mercedes would not make a permanent fix, and pass this off on customers.
You’re most welcome I hope it helps you! I spoke with Mercedes as recently as yesterday When I stopped in for the airbag recall. I asked if they had a different solution and they said no. Obviously this repair is not going to be permanent for the life of the van... The caulk will wear out eventually. But it should last longer than the factory repair and cost much much less! Let me know how it works out for you.
@@mctag123 I finally got tired of the leaky roof, and started my repair. I was going to use 3M Marine 4000 UV sealant, but after disassembly, I'm not sure I want to use any adhesive/sealant. The way this comes apart, if I ever needed to replace the condenser, I don't know how I would be able to get it apart without damaging several other things. This is a horrible design! I feel forced to use the same seal tape that failed. To the seal tapes credit, it doesn't look like it actually failed, but was the technician that failed to make sure it was in place properly.
Ryan Gunnells if you look at my pictures is looks the same (like poor installation) but if that were true it would have leaked from day 1 IMO. I had the same thought when i did mine... “what if i have to service this”.... but at the end of the day flexible silicone caulk is not superglue, and i figured I’d cross that bridge when it comes. I understand your concern, but the cost/benefit for me was worth it.
is there a seal from Mercedes that can be purchased or, is that obsolete?
when i did this the only thing Mercedes offered was the same 1/8" foam adhesive backed gasket. Its worth a call to see if they have upgraded due to all the problems.
Thanks, I'll check into it.Funny thing.... It seems to have solved itself???? Lots of rain the last month 1/2 but no more water in the AC. Lucky maybe?
Brian Smith Or it’s found another place to flow other than your vent… I’d be weary. Or is it possible but maybe the leak was just water coming off of your condenser working in the hot humid air… Could be any number of things but in my experience leaks don’t just stop, they get worse.
Hi Tim, thanks for posting this informative video. It will greatly help me in my attempt. I and other I'm sure would just like to hear a confirmation from you that you have not had ANY more leaks since your repair. Despite more rain showers. Thank you once again for sharing your video.
Much to my satisfaction I've had ZERO leaks.
Thanks for posting this, Tim. I'm sure I can do this, finding a minion might be the larger issue. Anyway, I'm wondering about the silicone caulking. I know it's a long-lasting solution but messy and would be a pain to have to remove if need be. What do you think about using some of the butyl putty tape, and/or Dicor caulking that is used on RV roofs? They hold up well, can be easily removed or patched.
i think that would work just fine. I had a hard time deciding what to use. the main concern that drove me to my choice was heat. adhesive tapes become ineffective in high heat and freezing temps. Thats what MB used. I'm sure there are 100 different things that would work well, just make sure it can withstand major temperate fluctuations.. in ohio where i live, we see 105 degree days in summer and -20 in winter. any choice is a good choice as long as its flexible and temperature resistant.
Thanks Tim. I'm trying to work up the nerve and the time to attempt this. After all, if you want something done properly, you gotta do it yourself, right? (I'm still going to get a quote on it!) Either way, I will try to remember to come back here and let you know what I end up doing.
I'm using butyl tape that I used on an Airstream. First attempt didn't work because I didn't empty the system and take everything off. Thank you for posting this! Our Ohio dealer wanted $900 to fix it. Thieves.
edweirdk the Dealer gave me a warrantied invoice of $3000 for all the work they did to fix and replace all the water damaged stuff.
@@mtmanor how has the butyl tape worked so far?
