My highlights from the heats at the Grand Prix weekend. Some good moments, some poor, a crash, a few near misses. A great weekend.
Superkart Donington July 2014 Race 1

Onboard footage of Race 1. I was slow at first and not wanting to hold up the leading 250 nationals, but picked up speed later in the session and got them back at the end.
Superkart Donington July 2014 Race 2 - First corner crash!

Reverse grid for the first 8 positions in Race 1 meant I started on the front row. I had a very slow first lap, dropped to about 12th, then improved and ran consistently in the 1:11s for most of the race. Unfortunately the battery died in the camera before the end of the race.....
Superkart Oulton Park my best lap, with Telemetry

Taking the data from the datalogger and putting to a single lap gives some interesting output. You can really see how the acceleration picks up over 11,000 rpm.
When your sailing dinghy is running on rocket fuel!!!
Nice vid, what camera does that?
It was a (borrowed) Insta360. The MP4 export is not actually as clear as the footage in the Insta360 app. I expect a bit of tweaking would improve it. However the files are about 24Gb / 20mins, so to make a RUclips video, something has to get downgraded.
360 degrees is brilliant, you going to do this for a race sometime?
Did some today. However, when the race started, I was upside down - so there is not too much close-quarters action.
@@NigelRCharman Who knows, the viewers might want to see a 360 degree view of the riverbed
Seems like a lot of steak left on the table in the early laps. Mesmerizing though.
Red lining too much no torque left up there you’re a tooth out on the back
rotax engine Rave valve
How did you make it to the front row? You've been overtaken by nearly every one...
I cant watch something where on the first lap the guy let's everybody pass him... IS JE SCARED!!!
hi i enjoyed that ,the captions were brill , but you were in a inter and the singles were passing you ?you were slow through redgate old hairpin and macleans, as you noticed when the leaders past you , but you had fun i had 30 years of these and struggled for the first 5 before i got the hang of it , so hang on in there watch the quick guys thats where you learn , they have moved the chicane on to the pit straight,it was a lot closer to the grandstand ,oh looked like you were over geared by a tooth , the fastest part of the track used to be craner would gear it to hit limiter before old hairpin , then you had a lower ratio to climb the hill to macleans thats how you carry the speed into mcleans, good luck
Very courteous driver. Let's everyone pass him so as not to impede the flow of traffic. .
You were running too much front wing and rear wing. That's why many people say you are slow !!! ... :P Anyway, nice improvement through the race. I saw you going faster and be a little bit more risky on certain corners. ;)
Senna: Donnington, European GP. 4th to 5th and to 1st before the end of the first lap. You went from 2nd to 12th in the 1st lap.
Maxwell Speedwell. Yep. Well counted.
You would have to conclude that Senna was better than me.
Chuffin ell. Thats only 10s or off a V8 Radical, mental
this is free training or practise?
This was a race. The single cylinders started separately from us in the twins, and there were only three twin cylinder karts. I was some way off the pace, as you can see. The other two were gone. I got better over the next couple of years. These karts are QUICK though, and take some getting used to. 0-100mph-0 in under 7 seconds, and cornering to suit. Superbikes with 300hp are taking around 1m33s to lap Oulton park, and Superkarts with only 100hp and a lot more drag are taking 1m35s, so you can see that it's all in the braking and cornering. Much lower top speeds, (~135mph vs ~180 mph), but much shorter braking and higher apex speeds (~4g braking and 3g cornering).
Thanks man. it looks to me its some kind of free training because you dont push your kart to the limits, far away from it,also this wierd overtakings on such crazy slow drivers who have forgotten where the trottle is lol. i think this was not a real fun race for you right, more of a booring & chilling one. nvm. good performence anyway. ("only" 100 ps? HAHAHA thats really funny. "ONLY"100 ROFL)
Wildboy0001 - I don't think you appreciate how quick these are. I was off the pace, but still pulling 2.0-2.5 g through the corners. These karts can do 0-100-0 mph in under seven seconds. Taking it easy is 8 seconds. They make supercars look stupid. It was a blast driving one as quickly as I dared. Have a look at a video like this one - superkart vs. Ferrari 340s: ruclips.net/user/redirect?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DxQ1VXT1cVHo&redir_token=9Y5pH1Sfs6VatnJl0zJSUvevxgJ8MTUwMDE1MDM3NUAxNTAwMDYzOTc1 and imagine having some fun in one of these, even driving round on your own. Awesome.
Textbook block pass at 9:40, nice. 130 must feel like 180 that close to the tarmac!
Cant believe you actually passed a guy.lifting way ,way,to early into almost every corner
These karts are doing 100 mph to zero in a little over 2 seconds. I was probably taking 2.5 seconds. It is quite hard in a new kart to instantly have the confidence to brake from 130mh at the 50m board, but I did improve a little.
dude, the green flag means GOOOOOOOO
rich mans toys
Stephen paul Trethewey come to one of the meetings and you will see how untrue that comment is. Most drivers are normal people bringing the kart in the back of a van. We have lorry drivers and plumbers, as well as engineers and doctors. I did the whole championship on £6500. Which is too little, really.
when you have ONE driver and kart so much faster and better than everyone else. there has got to be something up with that.
its called testicles
I have raced karts with briggs and clone engines and average speed at most tracks would run 75-80 mph no shifting, I would like to try this just once in a open track no compition
mph
kph or mph?
TBH you lucky you didn't seize that motor, stop feathering the throttle lol, very poor start but slowly improving all through the race...
hi, the person who 'thinks' you are slow needs a lesson in how far you need to travel to even place a racing machine on a start grid . I am no cart expert . looking at your clocks and gear position at the end of the straight tells me that you may be a tad over geared ?? I would have thought that the cart would be in top, 2 thirds down the straight and peaking just before the braking point? or your gearing is fine but you can't settle and get in the groove for some reason .
Yes it probably was a little overgeared, and running rich. I was thinkig that there was more to be gained from improving the driver than the kart, at that stage, so was aiming for reliability.
Actually quickest point (on that day) was at the bottom of the Craner Curves. However, still over geared, as you say.
drives well after 8 minutes. miles too early on the brakes to start. good job.
THIS GUY IS THE STIG, LOOK AT HIS HELMET
why you did not first lap as fast as the other? Tyres?
This was only my second or third race in a twin - plus they're really good drivers, and I'm not.
Same start from Carl Hulme's kart>>>> ruclips.net/video/kRPCWJIDwek/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/OrT2wkgelXo/видео.html Front and rear cameras! Carl is awesome, gets taken out first corner and is back with the leaders by the end of the lap!
The quality of the video is amazing.
SO fast! My adrenalin was pumping just watching this video. I just bought an old tag kart. Can't wait to get out and ride for fun.
well u might have gotten pass by some competitor but its actually is a good experience, suitation like these is what makes u a good driver, only makin u push harder,im a driver so i can relate
Great drive for ur first in a twin. Makes me want to return to karting
Goodstuff!!! makes me want to get into karting
Love the captions lol
Look's like a fun time!
Do Superkarts have a Clutch Pedal?
Yes they often have a clutch pedal. The brake pedal often extends Both sides of the steering column so driver can left foot brake. some drivers right foot brake only. Some karts have a hand clutch. Once underway most gear changes are (sympathetic) clutchless i.e. with a throttle lift.
You are so slow
+Helen Kyte 130 Mph in one of these at the bottom of the Craner curves certainly feels quick - but you're right that there are some very good drivers in this race and they're quicker than me. If you can stand the boredom, I do catch up with a few towards the end of the race. They must be even slower?
+Nigel Charman was this your first experiece in donington? i think you looks like gaining the feeling on this track each lap. good job btw man. you dont have to listen to the people that says you slow, im pretty sure you were still trying to figure it out about this track from the way you drive. cheers. good lock man.
wow great video
I like the way you thank the marshals at the end. Without them there would be no racing.
+bikerpeavey Yes, they are real heroes.
Good drive I could see your confidence building with each lap.
+bikerpeavey Thanks. They take some getting used to.
hey Nigel when you finish go karting what are you going to do next?
+Matt's iRacing - Lie in a darkened room, probably!
Haha
Your braking WAY too early and NOT cornering anywhere near hard enough.
+mozzmann Yes Mozzmann, you are right. This was my first weekend in a twin, and I built up through the weekend. At the end of the year I found i had won the club championship - so I obviously didn't do too badly.
+Nigel Charman Well done, Sir You saw what I meant and learned pretty quick by the sounds of things. I miss Super's they are so much fun. Hard Work but fun.
Do you have to change the rings after every race ?
Mike, no I can do a couple of meetings (6 practice / race sessions) before changing pistons and rings.
Those things are CRAZY FAST!!
This is great to watch.
Nice run brother...... you may be hearing about me soon. ;__) peace
shame about the bug heh
hi Nigel change your gear linkage around,
Shepporsche I used to run with push-change-down and pull-change-up, (which is why I messed up a couple of upshifts by changing down!), but it's not easy to arrange the linkages like that on this kart. Almost everyone else runs with the linkage this way around, so I thought it's time I did too. I've practiced a lot on the computer, and after a couple more races, (see Donington) I seem to have got used to it.
Hi NIgel congrats for your video amazing i write from italy and here the class super kart 250cc don't exist...i have a question how much it cost min/max a kart like this...and for a used kart gumtree.uk or exist a specific site...Thanks from Italy.
Hi Mirko, thanks for the comments. The cost of these karts varies. A low spec single cyclinder kart could be had for £3000 - £5000 and a twin cyclinder could cost well over £15000. I have heard that some people have spent over £30,000 on their kart. A new FPE engine costs Euro 12,000, and data logging, carbon fibre bits etc can cost a lot more. I would suggest a starting place to look would be the For Sale section in www.superkart.org.uk/ Hope you find what you are looking for - you are not going to go quicker for the money!!!
Woooooaaaaaaah.
