Always interesting to see non-Eurovision fans' first reactions on the songs! I disagree a little on your take on ballads in Eurovision. They have always been one of the most successful genres in ESC, honestly I'm not sure why you thought ballads would never do well 😅 Balkan ballads, pop ballads, and so on, from Rise Like a Phoenix to Amar Pelos Dois to Tattoo, we have plenty of recent winners that are ballads. And France finished 2nd with Voila, which you may have forgotten about too. The other thing that stood out for me was the language issue. It used to be the case that everyone wanted to send songs in English, but that trend has been shifting for a while already. Måneskin, Kalush Orchestra, Käärijä... there are hundreds of languages in Europe, why limit ourselves to English only? Personally, one of the best and most important things about ESC is to showcase the cultural richness and variety there is, and the linguistic aspect is crucial in that too! I’m sorry, but from a Norwegian perspective that cabin is neither secluded nor in the middle of the woods. We also got no wilderness in Norway either😝 Most family cabins has running water and electricity. And more and more people build cabins at the size of a normal house or villa, so no longer a traditional cabin, but summer house or vacation home.

I saw this movie this past Christmas. It is pretty typical of most Hallmark movies. They have a very formulaic approach to their storylines that almost always include a "tiny village" or "quaint hometown". The comedian Don McMillan (former engineer) posted a routine regarding Hallmark movies: ruclips.net/video/TwgiAXYIDkk/видео.htmlsi=OwJAZLYbg9NLHSDl. While intended for comedic effect, he's also not wrong. Movies in general and Hallmark movies specifically are not intended to show reality. They are "comfort fantasy". They play up the differences between bustling city life and the slower pace of more rural life. Nevermind that rural life has its own set of challenges that can be equally stressful, just in a different way. As for the language and accents, if we assume that these movies are aimed at the American audience, then if the accent sounds vaguely close to any Scandinavian or Nordic language, most people will gloss over that detail. Traveling to other parts of the world is comparatively expensive (there's usually an ocean crossing involved) so we don't tend to learn the nuances of accents unless those accents are heard here (Boston vs New York vs Southern vs Midwestern vs Minnesota).
