What means the small number 5 in the upper part of the display?

My 830 digital readout is always just a zero. Any suggestions ? Great radio and does have the analog scale for just such the emergency.

The scratches on your TS-940S main tuning knob can be cleaned by simply peeling off the protective sheet. It's okay because the sheet can be easily peeled off !!!!

TS830, upon first release, was widely spoken of as very superior receiver, sensitivity good especially. It is the last of good hybrids due to having a tunable tube final xmit. This is an excellent, and cheap, used radio to buy or borrow as a first ham rig--it teaches the last of new comers what we old guys mean when we speak of "dip the finals." However, there are die-hard Kenwood lovers who could run up the price even today.

Probably the best tube-based radio ever made! That SSB demo had excellent clarity. That runs circles around the way today’s DSP-based SWL radios decode SSB. Thanks for sharing!

If the Kenwood TS 830s had a Collins badge on the face plate Ham's would pay $1,500 for it. One of the best all-time rigs but make sure that there is the CW filter in the "Goldline" units. Just because there is a gold badge on the radio you should not pay extra due to MANY rigs sold without the filter and many "Goldline" radio's had the filter removed by the owners. There is no difference between the silver bage and the "Goldline" units other than the added cw filter, and as I said, many, many were sold without that filter. Don't pay extra unless you know the filter is there.

The TS-940 ain't a "boat anchor" Marco .... it's just not an SMD airbox like most rigs today are ... so it weighs in a bit. Still the receiver performance arguably hasn't been bested by anything produced yet!

Nice looking Old Boat Anchor.I have the FT-101B (Earl Model) & the FT-101EX & I enjoy playing with them.I'm an ICOM MAN but for Boat Anchors I like the Old Yaesu Hybrid Rigs. For Serious QSO's it's back to the ICOM 7600 & PW-1.

Very hard to beat the TS830S, especially the Gold Line. Xtranaut is right - people are realizing their value, along with others of the era. Good receivers, and the 830 transmit audio is superb with an MC50 and just a touch of compression. And they're elegant as hell too. I'm so glad I invested in one, it'll have to be pried "from my cold dead hands...".
