I wonder where the office was. Must have been in city somewhere
Is there any higher quailty version of this and the other 2 parts of this doco?
Comeng is the best train manufacturer (Downer EDi, CRRC and Goanian are also the best)
What is the song at 1:02
Kenneth Grange iconic design still looking good after so many years service the awesome hst /xpt
Our British hst the cab was a one piece unit
They have given over 40 years service in the UK and Australia a really awesome train
By or after 2027 Melbourne's Comeng's will be phased out
BBBOOOO THAT CAMERA 😒
Awesome!
Lets bring back our manufacturing
The reason for sold the company is really political reason.Their parent company ANI is government own as major shareholders. After the Tangara Tender fail and a tragic problematic of Hong Kong LightRail phase 1 car.ANI think they cannot keep the business even COMENG own MANAGEMENT so disappointed to the ANI as they not support for oversea project. One of the Final chance are US LIRR C1 car. LIRR had promise they will give the contract to COMENG.But the company got dissolve and sold by ANI before they can sign the contract... COMENG had really high quality products.even our problematic contract of Light Rail Phase 1 Car. It still top notch and running strong...
No mention of anything in the credits at the end, like, thanks BREL / Paxman or whatever 🙂
They do mention Transmark UK (was the consultancy arm of the BR Research Division) in the credits. In the 3 videos they make clear that the train is based on the IC125 and BR & Paxman are also mentioned.
The train was a good design but the tracks it was expected to run on were hopeless and got worse and worse until the train was forced to travel at the same speeds as the locomotive hauled passenger trains it replaced. Apparently there's fatigue cracks in the power car chassis and in the bogie king pin mount's thanks to the rooted tracks. Such a shame !
Yep
Not bad for a modified UK HST
I wonder what the intro music is...
Silent Race By Bruton Music Album BRH17 Plastix
Sadly, the government sold or shut down Comeng, and now we import all our trains from Germany, France and China. We have lost major manufacturing capacity and be unlikely to ever be able to build trains here from scratch ever again.
Comeng was sold to the ANI Corporation which promptly went bankrupt and was bought by an international company.

@@marcusireland5696 ANI actually is own by government. the reason of sold the company is totally political reason. Government never support the labor and railway development enough.
For anyone interested the music in the background 2:09 is Frank Famous-Soft Ride (1981). Don't ask me how I know this...
What about the music at 1:02?
@@fused-circuit Home Cookin - Graham Preskett (KPM Album 1281) from 1982 I think
ah, so this is where the old southbourne railways menu music came from
I followed the daylight express back in 1980. My car was showing 140 km/hr & he was pulling away from me between Wagga & Albury. There is no way he could do that today.
They still run at 160km/h today, although sets can be limited to 130km/h if the wheels are worn.
Wow! Blast from the past!👍
Is that Webster street Dandenong at 0:15 ?
Webster st level crossing is going to be removed
Power car are a British HST design but the passenger cars are of a USA Budd design
Power cars are only based on those of the IC125, there are many changes including better weight distribution that COMENG were proud to point out. They are probably better in a front on collision. Carriages again are based on a Budd design but are manufactured by COMENG.
Good train and all, it is just a pity that since 1980 money has not been spent to upgrade the rail lines to a standard which allow faster speeds. Which would allow harmonization between the rails and trains.
Money was still being spent on track in those days. I met Tim Fischer on the night train to Sydney from Melbourne. But the die had been set there were no votes in trains .
Back when the constructors knew what they were doing
Back when we had our own companies that could do this sort of thing.
One thing that Comeng fucked up was the Air Con units on Melbourne trains they built
J. Pikoulis that’s because connex didn’t look after them!
The Xpts look really nice. A few more years and the xpt will be 40 years old :)
Runs on same line as goods trains unlike China's high speed trains
Music?
I can now identify the three bits of music used in this part of the Comeng video. Transport by James Asher Accomplishment by Alan Hawskhaw Tristar by Alan Hawkshaw All from the Bruton Music Library.
Daniel Hall thanks
General cruisng speed of 160Km?? BS. it cant even reach 140km
Simon Carroll the Xplora can only reach1:45 km but xpt can do 1:60 km
That's a load of BS. they cant even hit their top speed of 140Km because the track is just o windy
Design speed is 160 km/h (99.4 mph) not 140 km/h.
Memories of myself wiring up the controls in the cabin of the XPT and the year was 1981 I think....
Just discovered this. A great story of Australian engineering (aside from the previous obvious comments that the tracks should be worked on as well). It's a shame the power cars were never stainless steel.
It's a localised British HST intercity 125 built under licensed
Indeed. COMENG took pride in extensively modifying the BR Class 43 for Australian conditions including claimed better weight distribution.
@dhruba958 nah mr bannon was a grumpy guy, maybe too cool for us simple workers.
What a great place Australia was back then, and to think that now a company from Hong Kong runs Melbourne's transport system....It's enough to make you want to throw up!!
Gus Libby The A-Sets are really a fine train.
bg183333 Melbourne transport really has gone down the gurgler.
6 years on, this is still true, and it's gonna happen to Sydney Metro soon aswell!
@@griffinrails MTR runs one of the best networks in the world in HK. So really is the issue MTR, or the government restrictions that are put in place over the system?
@@jameslipscomb4916 Melbourne itself has too.
melbournes comengs are still going strong
unfortunally not now when the hitachi was in its late days the comengs were pretty awsome but now they are going away i think they will do a farewell service
@@RealNotOrrio you know that comment was posted 9 years ago right?
looks like the melbourne trains were refurbished TWICE.
masterawesomeish more than twice now

OLD MELBOURNE CENTRAL STATION + OLD COMENG & HITACHI LIVERY + Z SERIES MELBOURNE TRAM OLD LIVERY = WINNING!!! Plus before that all trains and trams were manufactured in Australia.
only if the goverment spent the dosh to fix the tracks, then they could think about running it at 200kp/h or evan better upgrade the whole dam lot and do a French TGV inspired train they hit about 500kp/h the XPT's what a shame a train is only as good as it's tracks
Adam The Aussie Spending the 'dosh' on lines that are only used once a day, as well as the steepest mainline intercity grades would be a waste, when they can just design a train that fits the current specs.
@Alexander Dunn No way the XPT could go that fast (250 km/h = 155 mph). The XPT has lower geared traction motors in order to get up the steep grades in Australia, hence the design speed of 160 km/h (99.4 mph) as compared to the UK IC125 (HST) design speed of 201 km/h (= 125 mph).
ooh man those old comeng interiors bring back some damn good memories xD actually, it's how the adelaide 3000s look today lol
Just think, if the Australian government were to spend a few dollars, to sort out the shocking poor track quality, they might end up with a train service that was quicker, smoother, and that people would want to use...
The Australian government doesn't invest much in State Railway Tracks. That's the state government's job. We have invested a whole bloody lot actually, but less in lesser passenger used lines of course. Victorian Railways by contrast feels like rocks.
You can see the HST heritage of this train. just immagine if the track quality were better....
The track condition is absolutely pitiful for such a large populous state that depends heavily on public transport. A legacy carried on from pillar to post govt/privatised railway entities over the decades. Railcorp certainly the biggest shitstain on the fabric of NSW railway history.
