An overview of how we take stage 4 students through Banjo Paterson's Clancy of the Overflow, explicitly guiding textual deconstruction and building paragraphs. Hard to sit still on one's chair, but look, it is what it is!

What a teacher physically does in the classroom. Aka: A realistic demonstration of how we use Q and a to elicit and introduce new vocab and ideas, allowing us to build multi clauses sentences on the board with the students using the "this does that, doing that..." scaffold. Yay x2 Apologies for the light on the board.
Man from Iron Bark: Bally Method English

Deconstructing a line from The Man from Iron bark, demonstrating how we use Q and A to extrapolate ideas from the text and write these on the board. Stage 4 deconstruction of text. I found this amusing and it does demonstrate how we spend 10 mins looking at one line and looking at how we write about it. Yay!

The Peter Jackson version was just awash in music. Background music. Bakshi really makes use of natural sounds. He doesn't overwhelm the scene. I always felt that Bakshi really did capture the essence of Tolkien's world much better than Jackson did. Just watching this I feel like I am in that world. Sort of like a magic of that world. Jackson's films are impressive but I felt like I was an outsider to them. A little bit too action driven.

I think Galadriel was a very passionate and energetic person. It would be her style of communication to laugh much and generally be very cheerful - but at the same time she would instill awe and even fear, admiration and, perhaps, lust even (remember Feanor). And she would use it to manipulate people. It's a very conflicting set of traits and difficult to play. But that's a task for a great actress. I understand that such subtleties were no concern of the director but that's a pity. No one understands Galadriel, and I think she's the main character not just in LotR, but in all Tolkien's works on Middlearth. Rings of Power had a chance to tackle this character but they absolutely ruined her. Galadriel is not GOOD. She is GREY - has always been. She has a plan, a vision and tries to achieve those goals. As I understand, Tolkien thought that this grand vision of how the world should be always leads to "the dark side". She is balancing on the brink of it. And the moment in LotR is pivotal as she has a chance to fulfill her plan. I think Sauron wanted precisely this. He didn't need the Ring to conquer Middlearth. He needed it to be used by an elf lord, so he would gain power over the elves. He pushed things so that the elves believed that there was no way out except for using the Ring. If she had succumbed, Sauron would not just have possessed her (albeit partly and slowly), but also he would have held the fates of all the elven race (for such was the original power of rings - to collect the destinies of all the free peoples and use them for stalling the decay of Middlearth, and Galadriel had an elven ring). I think that for her to fight this battle of spirit with smile was only natural. It was mentioned by Tolkien that she actually didn't look as a great ruler all the time (unlike, say, Elrond), she didn't need to show her dignity and majesty (she might even afford to look a little silly). Overall, I think Bakshi's vision was a little simplistic (as it becomes a cartoon), but it was closer to how I imagine Galadriel. PJ's version was too "Hollywood" for me. There was no subtlety, no powerful acting. I believe the fewer special effects, the better. Actors must act, show things with their face, their voice, their posture. There must be more camera work, lighting, scenery. All these things are becoming unnecessary - seemingly - with CGI, but in fact now they are needed more than ever.

Galadriel is chiding Frodo for offering her the ring, not happily surprised at the idea of having it. And she “long desired” to know if she’d pass the test, if presented the opportunity, she didn’t long desire to have and use the ring. She, like Gandalf, knew it would be bad to have in their possession. Jackson et al didn’t seem to understand this.

Thanks for continuing to share this method and examples. We started teaching the Seldon method a few years ago when you first published your videos and had the best English Standard results ever at our school. Due lots of disruption and staff changes, we dropped off with it and I'm trying to reintroduce again after having recently read the CESE document. Being an English teacher, I really appreciate seeing the English examples and love looking at the teacher resources/student books. Is there any chance you could share a bit more about how it works in HSIE and Science subjects?

I like her laughing at Frodo's proposal. In the Peter Jackson movie, Galadriel is still deeply shaken and tempted by the offer and its prospect. In contrast, the almost sassy laughter in this version seems to indicate that this version of Galadriel has already pondered the idea to the end and rejected it for herself. Even though it seems slightly goofy how she's so light-hearted in her dismissal of something of such gravity, it shows her as someone who has already overcome this kind of desire for power, and is thus in a way wiser than her live action counterpart.

The term "Ghirlandéina" refers to the "Ghirlandina" which is the Bell Tower of the Cathedral of Modena and which has become the symbol of the city. It owes its name to the double row of railings that adorn it as if they were garlands. The song is not in Italian but in the regional language (Emiliano) spoken in that city.
