Hey from NEW ZEALAND. One of his best. Absolutely beautiful....one hell of a final concert, thank goodness he did it when he did, pleasure is all ours to keep. Just love the way in The State they celebrate his life. All the great American autos cruise the streets for miles, his music overtaking everything. People lining the sidewalks sitting on chairs just enjoying it all. I was 9yrs old when i heard .runaway. all hits in the 60s were great. Dont think he realised just what a great singer he is. Thank goodness we have access like we do, to relive his memory thru his music. 💙

Reading these comment's, anyone would think that you all think here in this footage, that Del Shannon was old and elderly here, he was only 52, that is young, not old. We get better as we age, here Del is still very young, and is in his prime, he was as good, if not better than when he first recorded this song. He is in top form, and Paul Shaffer's band here are all very young guys. Letterman is young, and by the time Letterman was 55, or he could have been 59, he had a heart attack and almost died. He had open heart surgery, 5 bypass valves connected to his heart, about a week or so after, he came back to host his show. Paul Shaffer hosted the show with special celebrity guests coming on to share hosting.. David was way too young to be having a heart attack and then open heart surgery to fix him. He went on and hosted the show for many years following this, he gave up smoking, as he was considered a heavy chain smoker leading up to this. He was lucky, and is still here today because of some life changing decision's. He gave up the smokes, and the show today with Steven Cobert, is no where near the high quality that David Letterman presented. The Paul Shaffer band were a more talented bunch of musician's to what Steven Cobert's band are, they haven't got the fineness or talent that Paul Shaffer's band have, even today, these guys still play in various bands, and are top shelf. Del Shannon was very young, and life was still ahead of him. I don't know any details that lead up to his death, but he was an extremely great song writer and performer, great voice, which there will never be again. Later he went on to take up a position in the 'Travelling Wilburies' with George Harrison, Jeff Lynn, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, as Roy Orbison passed away unexpectedly, and this was a fresh start for 'The Wilburies', as their 2nd Album didn't do as well as their first. With Del Shannon on board, mean't new blood, fresh old material, plus new ideas for them, and a new phase for Del Shannon and his life going forward, very sad what happened for Del and the Wilburies. They did record 'Runaway' which sounds great, very faithful to the original, very tight and together. This Letterman footage is great, Del Shannon has always been a favourite of mine, but he isn't old here, he is still young and vibrant. Yes, he is being backed by musician's younger than him, he is the star, they're caught up in the positive energy being presented by Del Shannon, so he is propelling them, they're excited about backing him, it shows, and they're doing and giving a great performance. Later as we know, Paul Shaffer's band here, all became a bit more conservative with their appearance, and dressed more classier. And probably became better player's themselves from all the work they did on the show, and away from the show. They got work as the house band on quite a lot of the top award shows, academy awards, shows where a good band was required to back up many singing artists. Top people. Letterman always had top shelf artist's on his shows, musicians, bands, singers, actors, top comedians, you name it, they were on the show. Including Presidents, Bill Clinton, George Bush, Barak Obama and his wife Michele, even Donald Trump, was a guest. Hilary Clinton, Paul McCartney, and his band performed on the show. I don't see this with Steven Cobert, he has a lot of unknown actors and singers I've never heard of !? So I find his show quite boring. Ofcourse, it is a different time, where we aren't into what they present, and he needs to realise there are us people out here watching, where he needs to bring on people who we all know, rather than just what younger people relate to ! Most young people don't stay home or watch Steven's show, young people go out, hang out with their generation, drinking, doing hard heavy drugs, Ending up in fights or hospital because of drug over dosing, most parents haven't a clue where their son's and daughter's maybe? or do they care. Us oldies were quite different, more responsible when it came to letting our parents know where we are going, and might be going. Not today ! So they're not at home watching the television. They need to put some decent entertainment on for us older people. Cheers. Del Shannon is great.
