Shaping Root Over Rock Ficus Bonsai
Today, I will continue the process of shaping my root-over-rock ficus microcarpa bonsai.
The journey so far has been incredibly rewarding, and with each pruning and wiring session, this bonsai continues to improve in both form and structure. Over time, it will develop a more refined shape, stronger structure, and, hopefully, a more defined and resilient silhouette.
When it comes to bonsai growing and shaping, it's essential to think long-term. This is something I’ve emphasized before, and I will keep repeating: Do not prune and shape your bonsai to simply look good now-prune and shape it with the future in mind.

Dwarf Pomegranate Bonsai Styling

Creating a bonsai from a dwarf pomegranate tree is a careful and thoughtful process. This type of bonsai naturally grows with straight branches, so the challenge is to shape it into a pleasing form without forcing it into an unnatural look. The first step in dwarf pomegranate bonsai styling is to examine the bonsai's structure. Three branches are growing from the same spot near the base, which ...

Bonsaiul acesta are frunzele inchise la culoare. As fi recunoscatoare.

Hi mate, I've watched your ginkgo short you posted and I've noticed you saying that your soil dries out very quickly, I have bonsai in similar, if not even smaller pots that I water ONCE a day, they are also on the south facing balcony (it is an open balcony, but I dont see how that would help them stay wet) in Bucharest. What I'm trying to say is that maybe you should change your soil mix, the soil mix I use is 1-zeolite 1-lava rock 1-pumice with 3-6mm grain size and with moss grown on top using Ryan Neil's method. Try it out maybe, I have seen ZERO root rot issues even when watering a pine daily in the winter time (something that I did NOT need to do :) but thankfully with no consequences). The zeolite has REALLY GOOD cat-ion exchange aswell.
Yeah I don't like to use pumice for other stuff then conifers. I build my bonsai mix over the years. Due to recent climate change, I have to change it. The best substrates are the ones that don't retain a lot of water....that's the problem.
Feel free to ask any bonsai related questions and I will be happy to answer.
I have hope from the little green leaves that they will come back
Me too. But it's quite tricky when they are this bad, and I will post a video today explaining why. My friend should have brought them to me sooner. I will see what can be done, but I cannot work miracles.

Nu stiu cum as putea sa iti arat aici....
Salut! Are nevoie de repaus relativ.
It is not the shadow. They are shading nets. As you will see at absolutely any bonsai nursery. Trees grow much better in partial shade during the summer. The internodes are long because the plant is left to grow freely. Large leaves help a lot in development. Bonsai are made in stages and now it is not in any form at the ramification stage. When we get there, then we start thinking about something like this. The behavior is absolutely normal considering that we had temperatures of over 45 degrees outside and about 35-36 inside thanks to the shading cloths. The plant grows very fast and well and of course I winter them. I have both deciduous and coniferous trees. I winter them all outside.
Buna seara, codița frunzei nu se taie? Am observat ca ați lăsat cozile.
Cad singure.
Gasesti aici pe canal clipuri despre cum sa faci asta si in romana si in engleza.
Momentan este inca in vegetatie, creste ca nebunul in perioada asta.
Mai vrei sa tai o data pana in octombrie? In ce stadiu e? Ce inseamna mare? De principiu poti taia si acum. Eu o sa o fac cam peste o saptamana.
Medii diferite, comportamente diferite.
please re upload video with plant id /name 🙏
Like direct și keep up the good work.

Multumesc frumos.
Is there an update of this tree?
I am sorry but no. I ve sold that tree a long time ago. I ve experimented with a lot of bonsai species and I don t find the Fukien tea to be a good fit for me. It just thicken's up sooo hard.
💪 Ficus microcarpa is one of the best indoor bonsai tree because of it's fast growth, and one of the most enjoyable Ficus species to shape using bonsai wires because of it's very flexible branches.
Water the pots very good so you get the dust from the potting mix out before you put them in the greenhouse. Keep the mini greenhouse ful of your future bonsai trees indoors on the warm side, and away from direct sunlight of course. Keep the inside of the greenhouse wet, but don't water the pots anymore. Every other day, open the lid for about 20-30 minutes to refresh the gases inside. Before you close the lid again, moist the inside using a spray. This process takes between 10-15 days depending on the species and the roots. When you see new growth emerging, it's usualy a sign that the plant started to grow roots or has finished transforming water roots into soil roots.
There's something that you said that I can't agree with you with, the fact that all good bonsai have a dome shape, I mean look at literati, or some natural style spruce bonsai, cascades or perhaps at Dan Robinson's collection, they don't have perfect dome shapes if they even have a dome shape at all and they are fabulous tree's.
Take a better look at them. I didn't said you need a perfect dome shape. But the shepe is there even if it's more like a triangle shape. Dan Robinson also if you look closely. Trees always grow in this manner. Remember what John Naka said: Make a bonsai look like a tree not a tree look like a bonsai. Also yes, it is an visual artform, but just like in any art, you have to follow some rules. You can't just throw buckets of paint from the roof on a canvas and call it painting. I will try to put toghether a clip with examples for people to understand a little bit of the artwork part.
not to bad!
Thanks. The tree will look a lot better after will build that grafted branch. This is a very good species for bonsai and it's quite rare.
Da.
Promising result! 🍀
Thanks. It will be yes. The biggest factor in my decision was the nebari. Ginkgo biloba is pretty tricky on building nebari and I didn't wanted to loose that great feature. The tree is starting to pop it's buds just now.
I can agree with most things you said, but not with needing dedicated bonsai scissors, there's plenty of gardening scissors that have long, thin blades, the good quality are also way cheaper than good quality bonsai scissors. Also, the concave cutter is not a neccesary item in every bonsai artist's tool box, some people don't like that perfect, flawless bark with no scars, scars tell a story, they give character to a tree.
You can get some cheap bonsai scissors. It s no need to use other materials. Concave cutters are a must. Scars are one thing, bad cuts are another. Bonsai trunks develop character with age. Cuts need to heal over on deciduous and tropicals. Also, big cuts that don't heal over look hand made and wreck the natural look of the tree. If you want scars, you make them look natural, but you make them on coniferous bonsai. And they are transformed into jin or shari. Having holes and carved trunks on anything else is a ticket to death in time because they are a health hazzard for the tree.
@@RABonsai they don't NEED to heal over, deadwood, hollows, carved trunks should be normalized on deciduous bonsai, you can use wood hardener on them and a hollow trunk might be a health problem for a big tree because it's losing it's structure, it might fall over, but in bonsai it really isn't a problem. People should really think outside of the japanese aesthetic when it comes to decidous, give them scars, hollows and stop giving them pad structures so they look like pines.
Go for it if you want. I told you it's a health issue. I've saw big yamadori bonsai masters that decided not to do this anymore because 30 yo trees were starting to die. I've talked and looked at 15 yo yamadori that were carved by need (a part of the trunk died from frost) and clearly that was a home for bugs. Deciduous exposed wood will always keep rooting whatever you do to it and it will extend to the living tissue. It may take 10 years, it may take 35 years, but it will happen at some point no matter what. Coniferous are a total different animal. It's nothing to do with thinking outside the box. This info came out a few years ago and now everybody understands why the Japanese were so insistent on trees without scars. They just didn't tell why to the rest of the world and always kept it as a design flaw. But now we know. For the design, the BEST advice that I've heard like....EVER, is: "Make a bonsai look like a tree, not a tree look like a bonsai" and it's got nothing to do with Japanese aesthetic. I started to think way outside the box in this year, so you will see at least a couple of funky designs.
@@RABonsaiowned
It has some pretty large leaves, will they shrink a lot from ramification and a small pot or will behave likes oaks and just get slightly smaller?
They will not get like elm size, but that doesn t mean that it will not be a beautifull bonsai. Just look at Ginkgo. But they get smaller with ramification. The leaves on this tree are allready 1/3 of the size of a houseplant. But I need to build tertiary branches on it, so the big leaves help a lot at this moment as they provide a lot of energy and branch thickening. The size of the pot is very good and it will never go in a smaller bonsai pot because this bonsai will get bigger. It s a species with big roots and you cannot go against that.
@@RABonsaiIt is a nice looking tree indeed and it will only get prettier with age. I can also notice that your video quality is going up with every video, you'll get that one viral video that will boost your channel one day, just keep posting them.
Hibiscus nu chinese rose.
@@Neapetricafarafrica same thing but ok
@@Neapetricafarafrica Hibiscus rosa sinensis is it's Latin name. Chinese rose is it's popular name.
From what I remember from your older videos you grow your trees in a closed off balcony, if so, why do you wire some of them in the pots? And another question, I've noticed that Bucharest Bonsai Association is actually becoming a thing, I'm not if you make part of the team that created it or if you have any inside info about it, but if you do, do you have any idea if anyone we'll be able to join it?
I don't wire trees that I know are going to be stable in the pot or bonsai starters that are very small and will also stay put because of the big volume of bonsai soil vs the root mass. Everything else, I secure to the pot. Even though I grow them on the balcony, I can hit them by mistake with my elbow or my watering bottle when I turn arownd or something. Also I move them around and take them to the shower once in a while to give them a good watering or even sell some of them. And there are even more reasons. It s a good practice to tie bonsai s to the pot.
