Millar Cedar/Rosewood Tenor Ukulele
Просмотров 2923 года назад
Quick demo of my new Millar Tenor. I've not got on well with anything other than sopranos in the past but I'm going to persevere with this one because it's so nice. Thanks to Matt at World of Ukes for bringing these to the UK. I almost didn't get this because I was silly enough to fall for the hype about wider nut widths. It's absolutely fine and nothing like playing a soprano or concert with a...
What a friend we have in Jesus (Band in Lockdown) Ukulele and Banjo Ukulele

Something I recorded to go along with my virtual church worship during the period of Lock down April 2020. I wanted it to be a bit more upbeat than usual just to cheer people up.

Chinese Tenor Banjo uke
Просмотров 17 тыс.8 лет назад
This is an very reasonably priced Tenor Banjo Ukulele purchased via Ebay. I was pleasantly suprised at how good it is - nice geared tuners, spot on intonation and a loud, pleasant tone for an instrument with no tone ring. I have modified it slightly - renaissance head, black french polish finish, reshaped headstock, hand made armrest, hand made cherry bridge sat on a solid ebony plate for a nic...
Hatikvah played on my La Foley ukulele (Hilo Strings)
Просмотров 67810 лет назад
I was in a lot of pain and couldn't sleep so found myself playing ukulele at 4.am. Tab for this tune is available in the book "Jewish ukulele" by Uke of Carl. I recently switched to Hilo nylon strings on a couple of my ukes because nylgut and fluorocarbon was tending to make them all sound very similar. I really like the Hilos now they're settled in - maybe not quite as much sustain for fingerp...
Wildwood Flower on La Foley Ukulele

I incorrectly say in the video that I have been learning this from 'Bluegrass Ukulele' by Ken Middleton. I have been using Ken's books, but Wildwood Flower is actually one of the free tabs available on his website.
Leaning on a Lamppost (Gangnam Style) on a Slingerland Maybell 24 Banjo Ukulele.
Просмотров 50811 лет назад
I just finished renovating a Slingerland Maybell 24 and thought I'd try it out with a George Formby Song. Then I noticed this Gangnam style green screen dancer fitted the rhythm pretty closely. Well, you know how it is. Bank Holiday and nothing better to do . . . . .
Complicated (Avrile Lavigne) played on a 1926 La Foley Ukulele
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.11 лет назад
When I was interested in buying my La Foley there was nothing to be found on the web other than a few pictures so I thought a sound sample might help someone else who might be interested in these particular vintage ukuleles. George La Foley had a reputation as an excellent maker of musical instruments and this ukulele is a real featherweight (290g) . There is no kerfling inside and the bracing ...
Coo Coo Bird - Clawhammer Ukulele (Firefly Banjo Uke)
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.12 лет назад
Trying to get more of a banjo sound than a ukulele sound. It loses something by not having a drone string but the firefly will work well for lot of these Old Time banjo tunes. I think the low G helps, but it needs a wound low G instead of fishing line!
Big Rock Candy Mountain (Firefly Banjo Uke)

Trying out my new (used) Firefly Uke, I like the banjo sound with the convenience of a featherweight instrument.
Trouble in mind (Ukulele)
Просмотров 27912 лет назад
I was feeling a bit 'blue' today so no better time than to try singing a blues song with my Ukulele. Actually I don't know if this is really a blues song because I don't have much musical knowledge about scales or music generally, I just try to play things I like when I hear them. Anyway, here it is - a sad song to my own ears, whether it be proper blues or not.
Soldiers Joy (Frailing Banjo) Key of D
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.13 лет назад
It seems that most banjo pickers play Soldiers Joy using double C tuning but this is my own arrangement in the Key of D played out of open G tuning. I realised I wasn't playing anything at all in the key of D so I need to push myself to use it and maybe transpose a few of the tunes I'd usually play in G or C.

Have you set up strings gcea or banjo strings thanks
Father Keith: I am interested in a banjo ukulele as well, could you please tell me the name brand of yours in the video?
Just learned to play this Scruggs style. This version is really good though.
Wish I found this earlier. Good job
The chords are G ..G7 A7..D E7 .. C with a Gdim. Somewhere
Very jolly kieth cant wait to learn it
Lovely
Great stuff Keith. Really beautiful.
Thanks Dick, I hope you're well and enjoying some sunshine up there in the north.
I really love this - exactly what I have been searching for to play on my Firefly! Question - is this played on the video with a low G? What are the other strings? Thank you.
Love it.
Hi Keith, nice to hear from you again, hope you are all well, take care
Hi Colin, yes I'm fine hope you are too. Was speaking to Wolfgang today it was nice to catch up.
Hi Keith, great to hear/see you again. Can we get in touch, please.
Fun tune 👍👏👏
Thanks so very much 👍👏👏
Love it! Learning this song on clawhammer. Thanks for sharing!
I’m glad you also got a good Banjo Uke Michael. The only thing I don’t like about them is the flat J hooks but I can’t fault the sound and playability.
Thank you for the video. I really liked your rendition of “Freight Train.” As to Chris’ remark previously, I just bought a (Chinese) Kmise banjo uke and the setup took less than 10 minutes. It was much less time than I’ve spent on U.S. made ukuleles. I enjoy my new instrument tremendously and wouldn’t hesitate to purchase from China again. I recommend Friendstore on eBay.
Hi Keith, could you get in touch please. dickedie@gmail.com
He's tuned slightly sharp of F# if you want to play along with the video .
I for one, don't have the money to spend on a high-end banjo uke, and appreciate your video & the time you took to review it? What brand is it?
Kent Strabala It's an Aersi. Cost £100 new I think but I saw a used one sell for more than that used so they may have gone up.
Interesting. I bought a couple of Aersi guitars--a parlour and a resonator--some time ago, and I can honestly say they were the two worst guitars I have ever had the misfortune to own. I couldn't get rid of them quick enough!
@@kingstumble I suppose a remo head is consistent from one instrument to the next whereas wood quality and thickness is going to vary a lot on guitars. It's a lottery unless you get to play before you buy.
Hi Keith, looks a lovely place, glad you enjoyed it, are you still in Sheffield
Amazing how the world has these little slices of heaven sprinkled around to be discovered. Nice to see you posting again. Blessings.
Thanks for the comment. Been a bit busy with training the pup to play much uke lately but life is getting back to normal now!!
Sounds nice and bluesy. Did you get your Kmise banjolele's yet. I added spacers and opened my back plate slightly.. Some of the frets were high and needed a little dressing. Looking for your next video :-)
Very beautiful. I just realized you really are the clergy, I thought is was just a moniker. :-D
I'm like you and like to set up and tinker with my Ukuleles. I just bought a Light Maple colored Kmise concert banjolele and am waiting eagerly for it. It doesn't matter where it comes from as long as it's played. I like the dark stain look!
Mr Photorooster I think the Kmise banjo ukes are fantastic value and I might end up with a concert myself for what they cost. I bet it's out of the same factory as the aersi which is great but the tenor us a bit if a stretch for me sometimes. I'd like to hear one set up with a calfskin head.
I'll Post back here once I get it and set it up and give you my impressions. Banjoleles have that torsion bar in the pot so setting up action shouldn't be a problem.
Mine came today. I had to fight my grand daughter (7 years old) for it most of the afternoon, I bought her a soprano ukulele to learn on but she loves the banjolele twangy sound even more. I'm not sure if it's your mods but to me yours sounds better. The string sounds bleed together on mine around the higher pitched strings. Normal listeners can't hear it but I can. So far the only tinkering I've done is tighten up the drum head slightly. I ordered a chrome armrest and will add that when it comes. It's very noisy of course so I probably will leave the back cover on the pot (unless that is what is causing the string noise). The action is good and the head nut is set about right. I did file the grooves deeper on the bridge to prevent the strings from jumping out while playing. I will jump around youtube and see what other mods people have done. Thanks so much for the content. Love my banjolele.
Mr Photorooster Try some Jim Dunlop student strings when it comes time to change them. Best I’ve ever used on a banjo uke. Low tension but seem to make banjo ukes sound much sweeter. Also be aware that a lot of those white strings are just that even though they’re claimed to be nylguts. I got a uv torch a couple of weeks ago and I was surprised how many of my ukes had fake nylguts.
Thanks for the advice. I will definitely give the dunlops a try. If down the line I want to upgrade what models would you recommend? I live on retiree wages so the more economical the better. I see many people playing the Firefly, the Goodtime and of course the Gold Tone but that one is almost completely out of my range.
The old saying, put a sock in it.
YOU bka
Thank you Father Keith. That sounds better than my Firefly, even with the fishing line for your low G. Maybe I will change mine out too. I like your picking but the sound was not synchronized completely so it was hard for me to figure out how you were doing it. Thanks for a great version. You have a nice touch. I think I may be playing mine too loudly.
Thanks for your kind comments Linda. I didn't keep the firefly long because after the novelty wore off I didn't think it actually sounded very good and there was nothing to adjust. I think it's luck of the draw with a pretension head.
Thank u Father Keith for your YT on this BU. I have ordered one, but could use some pointers on how tight the vellum has to be and why you made an additional bridge . Another question, do banjoleles usually have tone rings ? The arm rest ,what or how did you make it ? I am self taught, and have a soprano and a baritone uke.
I'm thinking of buying one now
Hi. Nice rendition! I have just taken a gamble and bought a La Foley uke off Ebay: The price was good IF it's playable or easily fixable - the seller has a lot of excellent feedback but isn't a player so I'm biting my nails in anticipation... In case it doesn't turn out to be just a very expensive ornament, could you, or anyone else reading this who has experience of these lovely old instruments, recommend a particular type, tension or brand of string to suit it, please? Worth BMs have been my favourites with most other ukes I have owned, although these have all been recently made and from towards the lower end of the market, although my Ohana CK35 sounds gorgeous with a low G. Thanks.
Hi Daniel congratulations on getting a La Foley they're really sweet sounding. I haven't yet had a uke that doesn't sound great with Worth Browns on it although I do like a change so I also use Martin M600 strings which are slightly brighter than the Worth Browns and also seem to be slightly thinner. I haven't got around to trying them on a wooden uke yet but I've just tried Jim Dunlop nylon strings on a couple of banjo ukes and they have a lot of clarity and sustain. They're slightly thinner than other nylon sets I've had before which have often needed work with a file on the nut for the 3rd string to fit the groove. The La Foley is a very light build so I would avoid high tension strings.
Thanks Father Keith (are you actually a Father, in the religious sense?). I'll try the Worths first of all then. I wasn't sure whether it might be prudent to try a lighter gauge on such an elderly instrument but I guess we're not talking mandolins here, with 8 steel strings on a tiny antique neck and no truss rod, so I'll stick with the mediums (Worth BM). I am excited at the prospect! Best wishes, Dan.
You're welcome Dan. Yes I'm and Anglican priest in two parishes where they've always had the tradition of calling their vicar 'Father'. I just remembered that my La Foley soprano was at the shorter end of the soprano scale length so if yours is the same tension isn't going to be an issue anyway. They're actually very well built but the top is so thin and lightly braced they do have a tendency to sag a little bit in front of the bridge over the years but it doesn't affect the sound.
That explains your busy telephone, I guess - you being the priest of two parishes. Thanks for your advice; I'll report back on my La Foley when it arrives, if that's ok.
Haha! Love it! George Formby meets Gangnam style! Who woulda' thought? :)
thanks. this is our aiersi brand banjolele .the best made in China,we would like to provide for all customers, find models from web www.aiersiguitar.com/category/banjolele-for-sale/
Sounds great. What make is it? Or from who on ebay did you get it?
It's great banjo uke for the price. I think they're sold under lots of names but this one was an Aiersi sold by marmauke. Might sell it soon though as I've gone a bit mad on collecting vintage ukes. Nothing wrong with the Aiersi it's just that the old ones have a lot of character.
You strum very well.
Blame the sock...lol
The famous J.G. Abbott was the Luthier who said George La Foley was the best. So that's something coming from Abbott.
George La Foley was a stringed instrument maker of London, England and was described by his peers as the best maker in Britain. His Guitars, Mandolins and Ukulele's were considered very good quality. He made these Ukes through the twenties and they stopped selling them in the early thirties. George Formby owed one. Not a lot of them left in good condition and they really are quality. Sounds beautiful.
Great stuff Keith, hope you are doing ok
Hi Colin. Doing good thanks hope you're well too.
ive been searching for this for years
Yes I didn't like the factory finish at all it was so rough. I used fine wet and dry followed by steak wool on the whole uke then polished with wax. The sticker was horrible as well so I rubber that off and refinished the peg head with a dark walnut stain. The uke has a nice silk finish now and has played in to sound as good as my Martin.
+Keith Ryder-West Never reply to comments using a phone! That should be steel wool not steak wool
Did you remove the headstock logo or were some of these offered this way?
I like your teaching style, showing a bunch of different ways to play the parts
Hello "Fatherkeith", I've a La Foley uke which was passed on to me by my mother way back in the 40s in India...If one looks at Wiki one finds that it is not (according to them) a Soprano but a slightly large Concert..Scale length is 16 1/2 inches from nut to bridge. It once had 19 frets ( some are missing)and is approx. 12 inches from the nut to middle of the sound hole. Has makers name on a label inside and appears to be signed in red ink " Geo La Foley" also numbered in red ink either 8713 or 8715.As I said it was given to me by my mother during the years of WW2 . She was born in 1903 so fits in with the "Gay 20s Flappers" years when many young things played a uke. We flew out to India in 1940 as my father was an Indian army officer, so the La Foley must have come with us.....Of course it's never going to be sold but might be renovated somewhat as it's been well used over all these years..Unfortunately my Children are not particularly into Ukes etc. but it could well be passed onto one of my grandchildren.I'm still, at almost 82, trying to improve my strumming and have two ukes, one guitar, two five string Banjos, a Banjolele and a "Dulcilele" or is it a "Ukedulce"?Cheers Bob E...
I bet that's one nice sounding uke!
Beautiful playing and sound . I'm not suprised you got hooked ! all the best .
I love this. You can rock an Avril song in Uke!!
i hope playing helped,
Note to Samantha Brunner - I have no reply option on your comment for some reason. It just says 'Linked Comment' against it. (Something to do with Google+ ?) I leaned this from a great website called Richard G’s Ukulele Songbook - look at www.scorpex.net/Uke
Soory to hear that you are in pain! Nicley played and a very nice song, i have a softspot for klezmer and jewish music (used to play clarinet in a klezmer/balkan band). Stay safe/ Kris
You have a wonderful style and that uke sounds great!
Thanks for the comment. I'd forgotten how nice the La Foley is to play so I've just dusted it off and recorded another video with it.
