Ep. 1: Long Intro and Porsche 911 Quick Look
A honest review. Shout out from Australia
I had MAACO paint my '06 Z71. It only has 85,000 miles on it. The clear coat failed on the roof and hood, and it looked pretty bad. They did all the prep, and they did a great job for 5k, looks like a new truck. I know a guy with a shop who would have painted the hood, roof and feathered in the rest for 7k. I used the Sunnyvale, California shop.
Holy crap! Man, what an inspirational story. I’ve ever seen 2 in my life. So iconic.
Hey brother! I’ve been thinking about getting a propane blower to paint in the cold too, did you leave it on while spraying? Or cut it off, spray, then back on?
Came out mint. A nice cut and buff and she’s ready to go. I’m in the process of painting my g35 the innozetek midnight purple. Wish me luck
How did your painting go? If you have…
If it's a 💩VECHILE 📦 it's definitely worth 👌 it, in my opinion, as long as you do the necessary and proper preparation before it get's sprayed if it needs it that is...
I recently paid 9k for a paint job and it’s just about as good as a maaco one. If you find the right maaco dealer then you’re golden
Any status updates?
Even if you don't think it came out great,it's one color,it looks better and best of all you learned.
Just took my truck hope it comes out nice $2300
How'd it come out, what was the final? You use maaco? I have a 89 k1500 sierra I need done, but has some qtr rot
It came out nice I am happy with it
Maaco IS worth it, if you do youre own prep work. 90 percent of the reasons why maaco paint fails and chips is because maaco will either do a poor prep job or lie to you and say they did it
How much cheaper if I do my own prep work
@@Tango-Mike-Bravo when I did it. Maaco wanted 300 for the "outside" prep work, then charged me 300 per door jam, under the hood and trunk. I said fvck that, spent 10 dollars on sand paper, bought black matte spray paint, and did it myself. It took 5 hours, but I literally saved around 2400 just on prep, which half the time, maaco never does
Get your quote, wait about a month, they will call you and lower the quote. I saved 300
@@mr.joshua204What exactly is prep work? I know nothing about this, but I need to paint my beater, and saving money sounds good.
@@chikenburger prep is light sanding, taping, maybe a little bondo on deep scratches and all that is needed for paint. Just don't get talked into paying for door jams and other addins
Right hand drive! Didn’t realize
This build is coming together so nicely!!!
You may have already made up your mind, but before “sending it for paint”, consider doing a collaboration/challenge video with some detailer RUclipsr like Larry at AMMONYC to color cut, buff & detail restore it, if that was the original color. Otherwise, to quote Blind Faith, “do what you like” (yes, I’m borderline boomer).
I’d love to give this thing a paint revival if it were worth someone’s effort but it’s just too far gone and there’s some areas of the car that need attention. Bubbling. Etc
@@Iansbuilds well hopefully you don’t find holes after the body work and paint are supposedly done. I found a gaping rust hole in the fender well at the junction of the door pillar, bulkhead, rocker, & heater channel, of the beetle in the avatar/profile picture. I had just finished the resto in 2021 when the fender got punched by a ladder some jack wagon didn’t tie down. When I pulled it to repair it, I found the hole. It looked like it was the size of my pinky fingernail but it turned out to be 2x4 inches. To “do it right” I’d have to do a “body off” so that’s not happening. I need a good source for aviation panel bond & seam sealer. Do you know of anyone for that?
It looks like you did not use the shims for the alternator belt. There is supposed to be 5 to 9 shims. You’re supposed to put 3 to 4 under the belt and the rest outside the cap, between the cap & the nut. The fewer used inside the tighter the belt, the more shims inside the looser the belt. DO NOT run it with no shims. I love this build, and hope I get to see the completed product. Cheers!
Thanks for the support! We did use the shims
Looks great. Did you take it to a Maaco that has a high rating?
I believe their rating is above average. Nothing phenomenal.
What the!? The Diablo and the 911 cab!? You’re wild 😂👏🏼 congrats!!
Targa**
@@Iansbuilds sheesh even better! 964 targa??
So rad dude congrats. If anybody deserves it it’s you.
Hell yeah!!
This is so sick bro!! Congratulations! Also you’re looking real beefy 😍
Lmao thanks
Congrats man!
I knew I should’ve bought GameStop. Congrats!! SE30 next 🔥
I made my money the old fashioned way. I got ran over by a LEXUSSSSSSS
Congrats dude!!
❤️
indubitably
sounds like a perfect solution then for drift cars and winter beaters haha
Bro!!! That’s a big win if you ask me!!! Truck looks great, and the paint is great.
Hell, that looks great for right around 1000 bucks
Dope video homie! Car turned out sick.
Thanks bro. See you on track this year
S14s look so good in white
Thank you so much for your “No BS,” non fancy approach with regular tools we all have. So refreshing. I just love your attitude. I hope you keep this going. Not that I’m special, but I’m a recently retired facial plastic surgeon who wants to get into this field. You offer so much practical information. Keep up the content oriented videos. I don’t care about video editing.
I really appreciate the support and glad to hear you’re getting into the field! I find I enjoy the process more than the finished result now so in the future this is a great way for me to look back on builds I’ve done. I’ll get to the chassis resto stuff soon if you want to follow along
love the video! I'd work on equalizing the audio between your voice and the music because i had to turn it up and down accordingly. Keep up the good work
Dammit. I can’t figure that out haha. I’ll try some things.
Nice job man! Curious, how big of an air compressor do you have?
IR 4000, 5hp.
@@Iansbuilds thanks buddy!
Your paint isnt atomizing nearly enough, you need a smaller tip or much higher pressure.
Very possible. The base coat was laying down great. The clear coat was not. It was also near 45-50 degrees at some points due to heater issues
A few things I would recommend… -blow out your working area so when your walking around it doesn’t stir up loose dust and dirt that’s been sitting. - your paint choice was good but I think you knew what you were getting into with your gun choice. Might have been for clout but if you wanted a better job you could’ve used the money you spent on a few shitty harbor freight guns and went with something more entry level that still would lay flatter and nicer than a Harbor Freight special.😂 - good job using the tac cloth but I would also recommend deep cleaning and wiping down your panels with anti static cleaner which also helps it lay flatter. All around really good job for something that costs a fraction of a body shop to do. Assuming this is a drift build I’m sure your not to concerned with how the paint isn’t perfect.😂
I’ll keep that stuff in mind, thanks!
Crazy video quality, I’m surprised you aren’t at 10k viewers or something😂 240sx has been my forever dream car to build out since I was a kid, and with that paint job, that thing is next level.
Whoa I really appreciate that! Go grab a cheap roller from down south and build it slowly over time!
Nice build man!
Thanks!
your car is beautiful asf
Thanks!
nice job fore the price btw
did you damp the floor before painting ? this could reduce the amount of dust
One thing I knew I should do but didn’t, but you’re totally right.
Looks killer, especially for the price. Well done !
Thanks!
What does one do for a living to afford all of this?
I’m a professional kangaroo trainer in Norway
People really out here living my dream. Def following along
I appreciate it!
Look good, feel good. I'd drive it like it is for a week or so just to iron out any flaws, then get it looking right. Loving the build man, can't wait to start diving into my '81 Targa.
If I drive it for a week and love it too much I may just keep driving lol
Nothing wrong with saving some money!@@Iansbuilds
I’d get it all pretty first
Kind of where I’m at with it
First comment! Nice work dude! Can’t wait to see her go down the road. Let me know when you want to sell it 😝
Thanks! I can’t wait either !
Those pistons look low comp .. what spec engine you building?
Std 2.4 T is like 8:1 or something pretty low .. why not put in E pistons & Cams? Make a better motor ...
Completely stock rebuild. I’m not looking to split hairs on an extra bit of hp here. Went with a brand new OEM MAHLE piston/cylinder set, personal preference. And it’s actually 7.5:1 even lower.
I Would remove the front fenders off to check for any possible rust where the fender meets the chassis, just to make sure. That is the usual spot that gets affected.
Superbe voiture ! 🤩🤩🤩 Merci !
Thanks!
It’s just best to look it up in the catalog and find the part number in the name of that part that is up in front of the rear bumper. I found mine rusted like that too. I sandblasted it and repainted it with good quality epoxy primer and saved it trying to order that part new from Porsche or Pelican parts LLC going to probably pay $150 or more
Thank for the heads up. I’m a strong advocate of sandblasting and refinishing parts but this is simply too far gone. Given it does nearly nothing but block debris I may just make one.
Hello Ian,wow great project ! I agree with about having a project sit for years. I have a61 Bug ragtop and a65 vert. Waiting for me to give them some love. You have to love to do this or else, the end result will show it. Question I want to ask, many people on RUclips have bought projects but never tell us how they paid for it. Just asking to get and ideal what the market is like. Thx,so much, theduck
Why does it say Turbo on the back when it’s a targa? Did someone do a swap?
Previous owner bought a turbo deck lid/spoiler. Badge will be removed for paint.
