This is an emotionally powerful video. Eelgrass is a water plant, and when dried, is thin and brittle. It was not and is not used for weaving baskets. The grass that is used for baskets is beach rye grass, that grows on the beach and not in the water. The leaves are made into thin strips and woven, and when the basket is soaked in water, it swells to fill the gaps and can be watertight! The refuge was created in 1960, and made wilderness by ANILCA in 1980. ANILCA requires providing continued subsistence on the refuge, and in fact, subsistence is one of the purposes of the refuge. So it is NOT illegal to access, hunt, or subsist on the refuge. It would be illegal to use ATVs off of established roads and trails within wilderness, but traditional access by boat or foot is not illegal. The removal of subsistence cabins was wrong and ill informed by USFWS.

This is absolutely ridiculous!!!! What a beautiful family and an incredible Mother. It’s beyond me as to why our “government,” and other nature activists organizations, who have NEVER visited the village of King Cove nor the wildlife refuge, believe that the indigenous people, whose families have lived there for centuries, are no longer capable of caring for the land and the wildlife that has been an integral part of their lives & the lives of their ancestors. All they need is a gravel road, about a lane & 1/2 wide to connect them to the community of Cold Bay & the airport. INFURIATING!!!

Great story about the perseverance of the Aleut people that is unfortunately not found in the US History books. Amazing views of the countryside too. I'd love to visit someday.

Wow, I need to visit the Aleutian Islands someday. What a beautiful place to live. Taking on the responsibility of preserving a language and its dialects is no easy feat, I wish you success and prosperity Mr. QAGIDAX and Dr. Stepetin.

I admire their commitment and loyalty. I’m saddened they were given this limited opportunity away from their positions as, at-home elders. These men are leaders and I see their choices were given, rather than solicited.

Would anyone happen to know how I would enroll into a tribe if my dad never did into the priboloff tribe if I'm 50th aleut? I'm just confused. I want to get a scholarship one day to go to a cultural camp or something before I die. My culture is important to me my heritage is and I want to pass it onto my kids. I just don't know how to go about it :(
