Arts Gowanus first art parade ever, June 1st 2024. This year's theme is "Creatures of the Canal: Real or Imaginary." Hundreds of people showed up for the parade that started at 280 Nevins Street and ended at 2nd Street & Bond Street. Children and adults put on their best costumes during the event. Some said their costumes included trash and plastic to represent the pollution in the canal.

I was staying at the Penny hotel on N. 8th street for a week during this fair. It was SO AMAZING!! I got to go be a part of it every night and see and hear all the action. I felt so privileged to witness such an historic event and so intimately!

Thanks. You guys are awesome! I always wondered, what does the giglio weigh and how many lifters carry it? I’d like to figure out how much weight each person carries.
@@toddcamnycthe Giglio weighs about 7000 pounds give or take(3.5 tons) including the band. It’s about 112 men under there at one time at MOST. So roughly 60-75 lbs per man, but some definitely shoulder more of the weight than others. If everyone was equally lifting the same, it would feel much lighter. It feels different for everyone depending upon your height and where you’re lifting due to the curvature of the streets, since they’ve been ripped up and paved over so many times.

That's why there was such a low turn out. Maybe next year more people will show up. Hope I didn't offend the channel. I was only two years old when this parade happened.
The Mermaid Parade has stayed the same all these years. The parade you go to now is the same fun it was in 1998.
