A Tribute to the Aberfan Disaster: 50 Years On - by Wales' Hywel Girls' Choir & Hywel boy Singers
Greetings from Scotland. I was there that day, looking down from the main Cardiff-Merthyr road, sat in the passenger seat of my brothers fuel tanker. I was skiving from secondary school (Not Aberfan though), because it was more interesting in the lorry. I was 12yo and I could not understand what I was looking at. It was just devastation and everything was covered in black. There was a long wide black trail of wet slag all the way up the mountain behind the school. Ambulances and rescue services were just starting to arrive so the road had come to a standstill. It slowly dawned on me what was happening and I had the thought "How could God have allowed this to happen? Why would he not stop that?" I have been an atheist from then on. I know all the religious reasons and they will never make sense to me. 144 people died, 116 of then little children, why? I know the technical reasons why the slag heap slid down that mountain, but I will never have the answer I searched for all my life when, I think of that day. I have often wondered what those children may have become in their lives, had they lived - who knows? If you wonder what a Scotsman is writing this for. I was born in Merthyr Tydfil, 4½ miles away and moved to Scotland when I married at 19yo.
Fffff X
Behold the Idolmasters
This is fantastic, powerful tribute to all who remember that dreadful day. My grandad was a Welsh miner , I was born in his house during the war as our house by the coast was bombed. God bless the people of Aberfan past and present 🙏🙏
I was 8 years old, watching the coverage on a black and white tv at home and my mother sobbing. This awful disaster and when JFK was shot are the 2 awful memories from childhood. What a waste of young lives.😢❤
I was only 6 when this happened but I remember my mother in tears hugging me tight when I got home. I understand now but I didn't then
I was 17 at the time working in a garage in williamstown in rhondda my boss closed the garage and we went to help i cant believe what we was seeing miners stripped to the waist trying to rescue them it was horific i will never forget it i still see the images today god bless you all
Thinking of you allways
I was 12 at the time and we had moved from south wales a year before,I think it was the first time I cried after hearing the news bulletin, it still upset me greatly.
i was there on the day of the tragedy of Aberfan delivering doors to a sight on the opposite side of the valley from the school I brought these doors to a building site from London overnight and my first delivery was in Aberfan this was at 7.15 hrs then proceeded to my second drop, which was in Merthyr Tydfil to a housing building site there while unloading the vehicle all the mechanical equipment was being taken off the site and not knowing why until later that the disaster of Aberfan unfolded. I am now living in New Zealand and in 2019 I went back to my hometown of Port Talbot I travelled to Aberfan to pay my respects to the children and teaches that died on that tragic day, It was a hart wrenching experience I still shed tear😢to this day
These girls are amazing. Truely angelic
Love these girls
Brilliant choir
Wilson in power, did bugger all to apportion blame, Blair in power years later who stripped the money that the world had collected for the families years before to pay for the removal of the slag heaps. LABOUR SCUN.
My grandmother had completed part of her teacher training in the school in the 1920s. I was 6 years old. I recall my mother picking me up from school in tears
I was aged 5 in 1966 and in working class Wolverhampton. We were told by our year 2 teacher that the Welsh children had hidden under their desks, just like ours, as the slurry hit. Years later a fellow clergyman recounted, in tears, how as an 18 year old National Service soldier, he had come down from Scotland and made to pull children’s bodies from the mud. This trauma went with him all through his life. The disaster has always stuck with me and always makes me cry, even now.
Such a great song!
I was 20 and just returned from 4 years in California. I couldn’t believe it. I knew the Welsh people had a bad time with the Coal Board but this was the bitterest blow and it need not have happened. Dunblane was deliberate this was not. Both disasters still make me cry for those poor people.
I wasn't even born at this time. Like many a Cymro this doesnt matter it's written into our DNA a deep sadness and anger.
So beautiful!
Beautifully done.....what a tragedy.
Hai.....
Will always be tinged with sadness that village.. I worked on the demolition of Merthyr Vale Colliery in Aberfan in 89.. sad all ways round. Great people tho’.. and true today.
This still brings me to tears.
I was just off night shift at the steelworks in Middlesbrough, visiting my Grandad in hospital, when I came on the ward radio, then the TV.
Gone but Never ever Forgotten. My lifetime gone.💔💔💔
I will never forget this and I will be 80 next year. This presentation brought tears to my eyes
Bugger but that was tough to watch.
My family lived in LLandaff that year from California. I was 13 and have never forgotten the suffering of the families and miners. You are in my heart.
💖🙌🙌🙌🙏🙏🙏The Gospel or Good News message , in just 4 lines :) 1 Corinthians Chapter 15 1Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, UNLESS ye have believed in vain. 3For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
That was the saddest thing to ever happen to Wales. All those children my tears are still in my eyes thinking about them. In a school where they should have been safe but nature had its tragic way.
An unmonitored slag heap, despite the reported evidence of movement due to water rising, is not by any imagination 'nature' having its way: It was/is/and always will remain a bureaucratic and political malfaesance of enormous indifference to the health, happiness and wellbeing of common people.
I was 7 when this happened even today I still see the mess and the loss of so many adults and children still breaks my heart to this day I'm from Swansea and it hit home how dangerous it is for the miners and for the families that lived near there. Forever in our hearts God bless you all
Rest in peace Aberfan if there is a lord you are top of the tree rest in peace 🙏.
I remember the Aberfan disater only too well. That beautiful music brought tears to my eyes all these years later.
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE I HAVE EVER HEARD, IWEEP EVERY TIME I HEAR IT. THANK YOU.
Not very often am i speachles. i am now, just tears.
I remember this vividly.....I got home from school and my mother was sitting in a chair with her apron over her face crying and rocking ..."Oh those babies ,oh those babies "I had never seen my mother cry before ,I knew something awful had happened ......
I was six and in Germany at the time and just as was going to bed saw this aad day in german 7 pm news next day was first time i experienced 2min silence
I was only 10 when this happened. 😢😢😢 So very, very sad to hear of all those children who died that day, and all the adults too. 😢😢😢
My Dad was a policeman on duty from a nearby Herefordshire village . He had to go on traffic duty So many people turned up to help they could not get emergency vehicles through He was heartbroken for monthsv
My parents turned up and turned away. My Father a coal miner, my Mother a nurse. No space for them.
I lived in Aberfan and the day of the disaster is forever etched in my memory. I was 12 years old and lost cousins, friends and neighbours on that dreadful day.
❤❤❤❤
How moving how beautiful
How could parents who had sent their children to the safety of school, come to terms with that?
The bitterness at the sociopathic indifference displayed by politicians and bureaucrats to the known danger will come down generations of those affected, and many others around the world.
I had just started as a teacher. When we saw the news, the whole staff room was silent, we felt utterly unable to do anything, no one spoke …
I was recently in Aberfan end of July. My wife had heard about this disaster and always wanted to go there, so I took her, she was overcome with the emotion, after walking past the graves. I even talked to some people who had lost some of their relatives. My heart went out to them.
This is so heartbreakingi can't see for tears those poor children and the parents left to cope after the tragedy my they rest in peace 😭😢😢😢
I did not know children were saved.
Just beautiful. Never forget!
I was 11 years old in a school in Swansea
Very nice!
