Ben Nevis Via the CMD Arête Full crossing
After being beaten back on the first day by 40kph Gusts, sideways rain and sub zero temperatures we headed back for another go. The day could have ended worse that the first attempt after taking a wrong turn due to poor visibility but we got back on track for a full crossing and summit.

CMD Arête Ben Nevis Part 1/2 Never trust the weather man
Просмотров 832 месяца назад
Day 1 of our Hiking Trip to Ben Nevis. Here to cross the magnificent CMD Arête ridge to the Summit. Gusts of 30-40kmph were predicted but NO rain. The wind we knew we could handle but just getting on the hill was a slog through and up boggy ground. At over 1000 meters the skies opened up On us, side ways rain with plummeting temperatures had us against the ropes. Having seen 2 groups passing us...

When the fear hits on Crib Goch

Spring Time crossing of the mighty Crib Goch. No fancy music or over editing. Just clear footage of what it’s like on the most significant parts of the Ridge Line. Of the many many people that summit Snowdon every year, only a small % choose to take The most challenging route. Hiking, scrambling and climbing is just the start. Once on top, you have to take those first few steps on the ridge and...

I was terrified watching this but I tried to take consolidation in knowing that you survived. I forced myself to watch to the end but ... the end never came. Where was the trig pillar or the drink in a pub or the slumping into a car seat.

There's a first time for everything. It's good that there was an experienced climber there. I remember doing Striding Edge in thick fog with an aluminium frame rucksack. That got the pulse racing.

Only mountain climbers have truly experienced “the sphincter factor”!!! ☁️🥾☁️ Congratulations! Appeared to be a sphincter factor of about 6. If I may….. 1. Always carry water and gatorade or something to provide anti-cramping. 2. Wear your helmet man! 3. Whoever is “leader/ guide”, Never leave that much distance! Psychological trauma can be just as bad as physical. 4. Always have a pair of thin gloves! 5. Always carry peak chocolate, it’s why we climb! 😁

Darren -- Crib Goch is not for the faint-hearted. In windy conditions, I would definitely avoid. Arêtes and me do not gel! There is a better way to enjoy climbing in my view. The brave thing to do is to say this part is not for me. I will tab out thank you -- and live to fight another day.

Ha, good old Crib Goch. Been over there a few times, all in different weather. Any first timers attempting this, I would stick to the left-hand side of the ridge, becif you do slip, there's a good chance of stopping yourself. Slip on the right-hand side, then it's usually good bye. Reason being, the right hand side is so much steeper.

You have always have you think hard about weather changes on Crib Goch.. if it had rained and the rock was slippery this could have been Very serious. I don't get this desire to video everything. Enjoy the mountains the views.. the sensations. You will remember it. The last I did Crib Goch was as the final stretch of the 14 peaks. My partner and I were so lucky.. we had a glorious clear day.. travelling light... so much to enjoy. You never forget it. Good luck with your next trip.

Years ago the party I was with had to assist a couple who had become stuck fast on the ridge. Its a pretty daunting drop, and I can see why it can be a challenge. The party I was with were all much more experienced climbers with a lot of rock climbing and winter routes under our belts, so a couple of us scrambled past, and with one of us on each side for reassurance, they managed to get across. I have no idea how long they had been stuck for, but they were very happy to get to the easier going on the other side. Lovely footage. Still a few small pockets of snow here and there I see.
