    Recognizably MacDowell from Op. 1!

    • @chrishill3341
      @chrishill3341 Месяц назад

      Opus 1 is recognizably MacDowell because by the late 1890s (after Woodland Sketches) his original eight opuses had been rejected and new pieces under the name Edgar Thorne were published using those opus numbers. In the Thorne works MacDowell allowed himself to continue with the aesthetic choices he had been making during the 1880s (when he already had a recognizable style), whereas in pieces published under his own name during the same period, he challenged himself to grow as a composer by writing deeper, less generic music. During the late 1890s he also tinkered with some of his 1880s music, such as the suites and Marionettes, to make them sound less generic, and the last new music published during his lifetime was just such a tinkering with the first suite, op. 11.

    For your information: the composer of this piece is the forgotten Viennese composer Adalbert von Goldschmidt (1846-1906) who wrote the oratorio "The seven deadly sins".
