I'm an Architect who works with historic buildings. On Simming History, we look at architectural history through the lens of the Sims 4. Why the Sims 4? Because its a medium of which most people are at least somewhat familiar. Come join us on our tour around the world and through time as we look at styles from every continent and time period, women in architecture, and more.

Speaking of Notre Dame, I still suspect arson and a cover-up for saving public order wouldn't be surprising either. They kinda did that anyway, or has anyone heard of how the fire contaminated the surroundings with lead to a toxic level? This brings me to the cultural heritage and architectural aspect of it: while you could still use lead to repair the building, it might not be the best choice of building material today... I'd be more sad about them replacing the wooden part, but getting logs of the required length and quality in sufficient quantity is basically impossible today!
Love it what program did you Use for the modeling
This is the Sims4, a computer game.
There actually were 4 chairs for the kitchen table it’s just that they often had the 4th chair off to the side but sometimes it was at the table itself. It was rarely used but when it was it was always behind the table from where the camera was. Also I believe blanches room had two closets, one for her and one that was her late husbands that the two closets were one huge closet. I say this as my bed room closet has two separate doors for seemingly no reason.
i love machiya
How does this channel have less than 1k subs?
I'm not sure if Germany has a completely different system, but what I see is that apparently often only the facades matter and you can complete destroy the interior for modernisation. We had massive problems with people lowering ceilings or removing decorations from walls and ceilings (Entstuckung), timber frame buildings having structural support beams removed for fusing rooms and timber frames rotting under isolation. Also, Jugendstil buildings appear to be mostly unprotected and still get torn down entirely and what hurts me most is that people deliberately let protected buildings rot until they can only be demolished and that's what they wanted from the get go!
I know it frustrates some homeowners and property developers in the UK, but I am pleased we have preservation listings as it ensures not only grandiose buildings are preserved for future study, but also more humble homes and interesting infrastructure too. Anybody can see what properties are listed by postcode area or street name using an online portal, with a full description (which usually indicates what aspects of the property/grounds are listed). Sometimes people complain that listing is "anti-homebuilding", but I tend to think that's used more as a smokescreen for actual commercial interest, or shows a lack of architectural imagination. Thanks for the video!
Absolutely fascinating and wonderfully informative. Not only was I finally able to understand the difference between preservation, restoration, and rehabilitation, but I NEVER thought of using the pool tool like that on the docks. Currently binging all your content - especially the vernacular architecture playlist - and already subscribed. This is the exact blend of architectural history and Sims building techniques I’ve been wanting for years - please keep it up!
Lovely vid. I like the distinction between vernacular and style, that's new to me. Hadn't thought about the fact that shotguns could be built in several different styles!
It's titled "An American Classic". But actually the idea of the Saltbox house homes from England
New subscriber : Im going to try and make the golden girls house on roblox, wish me luck. ✨
I also believe blanches room is the one at the end of the hall and the huge bathroom is connected to her room. I remember Sophia saying she hates using Blanches bathroom because of all the plants. That would also put the bathroom closer to Dorthy’s room which is why she yelled at rose when she was banging the pipes
The third door in the hallway could be the door to the laundry room. I never thought about there being two doors in the laundry room but it makes sense why they would always walk out of there especially if there was an access from the hallway
The Sims 3 has their version of the Temple in Al Simhara.
Where is the chimney?
Speaking of The Golden Girls, I am currently working on recreating The Golden Palace Hotel from its short-lived spinoff!
Welcome back! I'm from the UK, and have sometimes playfully looked on Zoopla to see what historical homes are for sale in the USA and it has made me wonder how they are protected from demolition or radical changes, so this video explained a lot. Will be interesting to hear your summary of UK law
It's a incredibly flexible economical design, which allows one to have a atypical experience of inside\outside, similar to more expensive homes with inner courtyards, like North African courtyard houses or Spanish courtyard houses.
If I won a lotto, I'd build a dogtrot house with a 3 season porch on the north side to ease heating bills & a partially screened southern porch to use without getting eaten alive by bugs. They're fantastic for letting breezes through & keeping the cooling bills down when it's nice enough to open up the house. Breezes moving through shady areas are much more effective than not.
I was looking up saltbox houses in particular and came across your channel. I absolutely Love this concept, showing off homes via the sims. Fantastic!
wow this was so well made! Thank youu
Very nice! I loved the history, and the build. Thank you very much for making this!
Golden girsl perfect

Great job! This is excellent1
wonderful domus! the only thing i missed was the peristyle fountain, but again there might be similar but not two identical domus, i've always liked to make such houses in the sims and it always seemed that maxis was pretty much into such ideas too.
This was awesome; I'm a direct descendant of Jonathan Fairbanks. Thanks for putting this together!
I’m glad i found this channel. I enjoy history and and the sims so this combines my two loves.
I would also love to see any other UK architecture for sure, but I have always been really intrigued by the aunt's house from Pushing Daisies series, it is just so quirky and different, the whole vibe of the show and the set places. Also I have not seen anything on that on youtube. Love your chanell :) This is what I always needed from youtube <3
This was really fascinating, thank you - not being american, I had no prior knowledge about this building type or its connection to immigrants in the USA. It's not local to me, but my husband is Singaporean, and a video on the shophouse - which appeared as a distinctive type of building in southeast asia during the 19th century - would be great.
I live in London and find I'm perpetually fascinated with Georgian and Victorian terrace houses and specifically how or if at all they connected with Mews. I feel like I've never been able to find a clear example in historical plans and it seems like other cities didn't have the two buildings connected in the same way or at all. Love your videos <3
What architecture is local to you that you want to see on this channel? How about pop culture (TV/Movie) builds? Or even real life historic houses? Let me know!!!
Well if local.. the typical Finnish log (farm) houses. With the compulsory sauna building ofc being a crucial element to everyday life where people bathed, gave birth and were washed in after dying. (Can't stress it enough how sauna has been the single most important aspect of our culture for centuries and longer.) The most typical ones I'm thinking about were built somewhere in the 1800s consisting of the main house, a sauna, animal shelters and storage buildings for grain and such (aitta). Usually they're red with white accents. Many of those that have been preserved to these days are called a pappila, probably 'vicarage' would be the most accurate translation. It's a good type of vernacular architecture too as the massive logs would have been insulating enough to keep the houses warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They are very sturdy, built on stone foundation.
The old Pueblo architecture of the south western united states, the creole cottage, or an old mining company house like the ones in West Virginia.
down in chile architecture depends a lot of the era: old buildings were built around courtyards pretty much the same as the roman domus, however they decayed from family homes to room-rent tenements. XXth century architecture tended to follow more american lines moving towards suburbs of single family homes of varying size and style according to the wealth of the homeowner. however, it differed from american housing in that many single family homes were built as public housing programs and those homes were often tiny rowhomes instead of single standing houses, luckily those narrow rowhomes were built with deep backyards so they could be expanded when families grew. often those neighbourhoods are still seen as pretty rough places, but at least people often do own the places where they live instead of renting.
Хочу себе такой дом в жизни 🥺
Hi! Sorry this is not related to this build specifically but I'm getting _desperate_ since I can't find any images or places to reference for a build so I though I'd reach out. If you have the time to give me some tips/pointers on where to look and find reference images or just any help I'd be so very grateful!! I'm looking for 50s, maybe also 60s high school buildings in the US. (Thought the styles would be close to each other?) Probably any school would do, I don't know if the buildings themselves differ a lot? I want to build a bit run down, old high school in Oasis springs that would look like it was built in the 50s(60s) but it's been super hard to find any resource material being someone from Europe and unfamiliar with all the terminology and such. Pinterest is usually my friend but this time around even Pinterest doesn't seem to be of help. If you have any advice, I'd be so grateful and happy!! 🙏😊💜
Hope this isn't too late! It has been a crazzzzy summer! That is outside my usual research - but HABS is usually my go to. You can also check the National Register of Historic Places for schools and then just do a google search of their names. Unfortunately, with places like schools and churches, the best source is a primary source like yearbooks.
@@simminghistory5504 oh thank you for your answer! I'm actually still working on the build so absolutely not too late! Huge builds like that don't come together very fast and I've worked on multiple other builds in the meantime to catch a creative breath so it's definitely still worth it to go through any reference material! ;) I did manage to find something on my own eventually (after several rabbit holes of stuff like googie architecture :D) but I didn't ever find any actual schools so it's been a lot of just winging it and guesswork.. Thank you anyways! ^^
@@dontwanagivit1860 When in doubt - watch movies set in that era.
I absolutely love these videos. If you haven’t already, you should make a video talking about the greek /colonial revival styles of architecture :)
Im so glad I found this channel. So cool! Youve earned yourself a new subscriber! :)
There was no A/C or garbage disposal in any of these. There is no lightning rod on the roof. Besides a wrench, you need a flat head screw driver to assemble the house. It’s important to note the panels were porcelain enameled. My Lustron still has the original 1949 roof. Most traditional homes are on the third or so roof by now. These are definitely cool homes.
In St. Louis, you have whet I classify as early second empire houses, which have a flared mansard roof, and for the most part are just an Italianate style home with a mansard, and later Second Empire style homes, which tend to have more vertical mansard roofs, which are, in many cases, completely different from Italianate style homes, and incorporate features from other styles from the 1880s, such as the Romanesque Revival style, and they often times took on a more German influenced vernacular look, as most later examples were built by Germans in heavily German immigrant neighborhoods. A great example is the keyhole house in Soulard at 13th and Victor, which was built in 1890 for brick manufacturer Michael Reinagel.
How does a video combine so many wonderful things into one? Sims? Architecture? History? Wonderful job!
I love these videos so much
Yay love to see another video! Have a great spring time! ✌️🌱

I hope everyone's 2023 is going well! Sorry for the unplanned hiatus! The first three months this year got sucked up into a family emergency, illness, and work. I'll be updating whenever I can.
I hope things are a little calmer these days. ❤
There is a four square house where i live, it is really neat.
Loved this!! I live in a neighborhood with dozens of this style and it was so surreal to see on a sims build! Love your channel!
Huh what a coincidence... I happen to be Finnish and I just learned like yesterday that the oldest still standing log cabin in the US was made by Finnish settlers in 1600s. I spent my holidays in a log house originally built in the 1800s (it was disassembled at some point and I helped to rebuild it when I was a teenager) and watched some Finnish videos about building log cabins and now you post this. :D
It's such an iconic build! I never knew it had a name, thank you so much for breaking it down 🌻
My favorite American house. I hope someone can truly modernize them for larger families.
I would live in one
