1990 Bronco II Driveway Restoration #0: Taking Stock, making a list and planning the work.
I found a nice 1990 Ford Bronco II for sale from the original owner. It had a lot of miles on it but was very well-maintained. It has 313,000 miles on the clock but starts right up, drives fine and everything works. It does have rust in many of the classic places Bronco II’s rust and it needs a bit of TLC. I plan to restore this classic SUV in my driveway just to see how much can be done by the average joe without a big fancy garage.
In this first episode we are looking at the Bronco II to point out the good and bad points. What needs fixed now, what can be put off for a later day. The original owner was very forthcoming in pointing out all the blemishes and rough spots he was aware of. We...

2011 Mini Countryman - "And arose such a clatter." Engine death rattle or minor problem?
Просмотров 3 тыс.2 года назад
In this video we take a look at a 2011 Mini Countryman I recently purchased. The engine has a terrible rattle that sounds a bit like a rod knock. I knew some of the history of this car before buying and it has been making this sound for 6 months and there is no debris in the oil. Maybe I’ll get lucky and it will be a minor problem?

    As far as the leaks take a bucket of really soapy detergent, really soapy detergent water and start the Bronco up with all windows up and your blower on high heat to pressurize the interior and apply detergent water to roof! Or even a can of shaving cream around roof rack fastener locations! You see bubbles comming you know where your water leak is comming from! Good luck

Would you rather spend $ 60.000 for a New Bronco made out of plastic! Not me, I got a 89 & 90 I can get parts for and I love those thousands in DA BANK !

      I have most of the next video filmed. It does not seem like an exciting topic removing and cleaning/lubricating the door latches, but it was a more work than I expected. For a relatively simple task I wound up waiting on parts a few times and also the combination of days I had free which were also warm/dry outside. I think I've come up with a way to refurbish the original power lock actuators which I might make a separate video out it. The aftermarket ones available range from total junk to Doorman junk.

    If you have proximity keyfob, you definitely need to spend another $600 for KC501. Don't buy cheap Chinese keyfob either as many cars have aluminum keys and many Chinese made keys are steel which is difficult to cut and ruins your cutter. Bottom line, unless you are locksmith, just get it done at dealer or find a good locksmith. This advice applies even more if you have European made cars. D8 by itself is useless for making keys on a newer cars 2019+.

    • @heyyoucanfixit
      @heyyoucanfixit 5 месяцев назад

      As I mentioned in the video...I asked XTOOL if the D8 would do what I needed, i.e. allow me to program in FOBs and reset the VANOS adaptation for this 2011 Mini. Programming in 3 FOBs almost paid for the tool. Every key I have seen, that gets inserted into a lock, has been brass with a nickel plating. I have never seen an aluminum or steel key, neither would make sense unless it was a non-contact sort of lock.

    The problem that I’m having, I have the same set up that you’re using. I did not update the vehicle so I am going to try to update the cas. But I don’t have any key fobs. Do you have a video programming BMW or mini with no key fobs?

    • @heyyoucanfixit
      @heyyoucanfixit 5 месяцев назад

      Usually an 'All keys lost' programming of new FOBs is different. Some cars require a programmer that can connect for the car manufacture's network to do some sort of validation. I think XTOOLS can do this on their own, i.e. figure out the unlock code on their own but it is a service you have to pay for per vehicle. I would send them an email and ask if your set up can do this. It is the Chinese New Year now so you won't get a replay for a week or so.

    I asked CRC, who makes Evapo-Rust about this. They said they have not done any long-term tests and don't recommend treatment longer than necessary. They also said that soaking metals with a higher carbon content will pull that to the surface. After watching the video, they thought it did not look like the wrenches and punches were affected in this way. It was nice of them to respond. Of course, don't leave your tools in ER for 8+ years like I did :)

      You might be able to find a locksmith in the area who can cut the key (what Mini calls the 'blade'.) If you buy the FOB from the dealer you will pay $200. Buy from eBay for $20, and have locksmith cut the key. If you have the D8 and KC100 you can program the Mini to accept the new FOB.

      @heyyoucanfixit Oh, there is really no risk on cars that are meant to have keys programed. This car isn't your downgrading the cas this isn't supposed to happen. This car, like almost every European car, is made to have keys made without the vehicle present because all keys are preprogrammed when the car is made. So you're manipulating the data on the computer and, in this case, downgrading. You will see that eventually, 1 will fail without a power supply, and you will have a mess in your hands. I mean, I do this job, but I use a power supply every time you need a clean voltage of 13.5

    Way back my parents had the dealer make them a second key for an Explorer, they were charged over $100 and got an aftermarket key....yes, an aftermarket key from the Ford dealer. I then ordered an OEM key from ebay and programmed it, once you have two working keys you can 'self program' more keys, similar to how you can program additional remotes. They wanted almost $100 for a remote and programming...no thanks. I always tell people with this era Ford to keep three working keys so that if they loose one they can program a third and never be stuck going to a dealer or locksmith for programming.

    Messing making keys can cost you big time is why the waring. I would take it to the dealer. They screw up they have to fix the mess. Also you made a lot of errors you had to clear. One mess up could cost you a expensive part. Newer cars are really not worth the chance. Dealership has the special factory scanner that we can't get. Around about 2017 its has gotton a lot worse. Sad thing is with these scanner you can find out whats wrong but you need to connect to the factory internet and pay them to get software. Also you need some more stuff to connect to the factory. Unless you do this for a living you are screwed. With the xtool it lets you sorta no what wrong so they can't rip you off at the dealership or a good mechanic that knows his stuff. Is this scanner a stand alone tool ? Does it require an internet connection to program keys? Other than the free updates for 2-3 years does it require a subscription to preform the higher functions ? Thank you I know after free updates end you have to pay for updates , however if you don’t pay for the updates can you still program keys and write ecu for the models already on the tablet ?

    • @heyyoucanfixit
      @heyyoucanfixit Год назад

      I think requiring an internet connection to program keys depends more on the vehicle than the scanner. For example, on the Mini I was working on here if I did not have at least one key I would have required connecting to some service (guessing through BMW). Same goes for programming VIN codes into modules and such. On some cars you have to use a online service from the manufacturer. One HUGE advantage, other than updates, to connecting the scanner to the internet is that XTOOL can download a log from the scanner for a car you had problems with. They did this several times when I was trying to do the Vanos reset/relearn on this Mini. They were able to download the log from my D8 and figure out what the problem was.

      I do not know anything about actual key cutting machines. I used the small CNC mill I happened to have which required more effort to draw a 3D model of the key, calculate the key cut based on keycode and generate the GCODE. AS I understand it a professional key cutting machine just needs to know the key code and type of key and it can figure out the rest automatically.
