Well done
Superb, I think I'd of just stopped at the Tyvek house wrap, cheap and probably good enough, what do you think.
One day to break even feels a bit overoptimistic from my experience. But i charge a powerbank for practical reasons which pushes the break even further back. Also sometimes devices work not well together with solar panels because the power output changes frequently when they are carried on the back.
Please keep making content. The quality of the content and production is top tier
whats even more impressive than the tent, us you built it in near darkness - cracking job
Very useful and instructive video, thanks!
Damn, i mostly eat Like Couscous, oatmeal, bread, dried sausages from the mountain villages and of course oil etc. It seems crazy to me that peopke eat cheetos in top of a mountain 😂 oh and i eat one fruit or vegetable raw every day. And onions and garlic! They are really great for your immune system and taste good, also they Store well even in warm climate and they feel really good in my stomach
Oh and I dont eat any highly processed food! I usually eat 2 hours after i wake Up, 2 hours before i Go to sleep and a small to medium Lunch. Im never really hungry and dont get grumpy. They Olive oil is really a really important Thing though! And i eat fish Out of a can and nuts for good fat and fatty acids(omage 3?) and also for changing Up my diet a bit inbetween. All those Things you can get at any Store at least Here in Europe, i dont know how IT IS in the US but I wouldnt wanna live in a country where i cant get real food (No offense)
0:49 Anyone else thinking Bond villain at this point?
This is pretty much the same system I've ended up with, but only after months of research and consideration. Really great advice, especially because it doesn't point at particular products but shows how to evaluate them. You may want to try out Shakedry for the shell jacket, it does not wet out. Not super durable though.
Do you wear your Pertex Quantum Air shirt against skin or do you use a baselayer (if so which one?)?
If I'm wearing it by itself, it's a next to skin layer. If I'm wearing a fleece, I'll wear it over the fleece. Now, I prefer to make my own but in the past I've used Patagonia ones.
Great video mate, what type of sewing machine is needed for doing this.
All that's needed is a cheap, old, home sewing machine
I was looking for that kind of video, you are the only one on RUclips that is talking about ultralight solar panels! Thanks!
Love your videos!!
This is one of the best MYOG videos, thanks!
How did you connect and combine the solar panels?
And how did you keep the solar panels from moving around on the pack? Bungee cords?
To charge 1 device with 2 panels, you can use something called a USB A "power enhancer" or "Y adapter". It's not as efficient though as charging 1 device with 1 panel. Yes, I use a thin shockcord/elastic cord to rig up my panels.
great video
What do you sleep in?
Ideally, I'll try to sleep in the clothes I'll be wearing in the morning but it depends on the conditions. I prioritize staying dry and I make sure I'm not unnecessarily compressing any of the insulation in my clothing or quilt/sleeping bag.
This video is very useful. It's very easy to understand with comprehensive analysis. Thanks.
hey mate. for the rain jacket and puffer did you make those yourself?
yes!
If you bring a power bank on a long trip then you'll need some way to recharge it, and if you are completely off-grid then you are out of luck unless you brought a solar panel or hand crank generator or the like. But if you are going for true ultralight backpacking you won't have much, if anything, to charge or power.
Great video, appreciate it how efficently and compact the video is
Video suggestion: Show how to safely rip open a sleeping quilt's baffles in order to add more down / replace the down.
That's one of the advantages of a karo step quilt. Down can quickly and easily be added and removed without a seam ripper and sewing machine. 20 minutes with a knife and hand needle is all that's needed.
@Adventure_Logistics that's an awesome tip!
As you say, WPB jackets are amazing when they work. I've been using Outdry Extreme recently and have been pretty happy with it. It never wets out, so it breathes in the rain. That's kind of cool. My Outdry jacket also fits better (looser) and is more durable than ShakeDry. Outstanding vid, even when re-watching a year later. Thanks.
So! Ah . . . stitch dyneema with polyester thread?
yes
Your style is unique on RUclips haha, love it ! Efficient videos! But to go more in depth the "pause button" is inevitable haha, thanks !
Donde vives tio? se parece al caribe o algo
y tambien excelente video como siempre. es panama?
Si!! Yo ahora vive en alaska pero el pelicula es en Santa Marta Colombia
excellent video
Cool dude!
I used your pattern and directions to make my tent last year. Cut it from a silnylon tarp and used what I had on hand for zippers and other parts. As one of my first sewing projects, I didn't make it perfectly, but with some changes I ended up with something that looks very close to the plans. Also added a second zipper flap below the first which an optional bug net door zips to in case I want to roll up one door on a warm buggy night. Added a bug net skirt also which in my case is basically just a few inches of netting sewn along the bottom. I can't thank you enough for helping me make this great shelter. I'm looking around for gear upgrades as is the way and I'm simply not seeing anything better! Practiced with it for a couple of weeks before taking it on a bike ride from upstate New York to West Virginia up in the Appalachians. Used this every single night. By the time I found myself on a windy mountainside backcountry camp, I had full confidence it would hold together despite the waves of wind I could hear come over the mountain before pounding down on me. I woke up with snow all around but completely dry on the inside. I like that its so easy to setup and strike camp. It rolls down small and with a section of teyvek groundsheet it's just over 2 lbs, even with the extra netting. Just amazing! I'll be using this as my primary choice of shelter again this year in my rides and hikes around Adirondacks. Thank you
That's awesome!! You're welcome!
absolutely amazing video, straight to the point, love your work. keep it up!
Wow! What a cool video! Everything is very detailed and without unnecessary information
a very helpful video
Only a 5 watt setup.
This should not be an “or” if you just use the panel all day to charge your power bank you have the best of both worlds with nominal weight trade for the net upgrade.
On paper, adding a power bank to your solar charging system (instead of charging your devices directly with solar) adds a significant amount of weight and loss in efficiency. In reality, a power bank is usually a critical tool on trips that require a lot of power. Having a solar panel is like having a fishing pole. Having a power bank is like having a fish. Fish are heavy.
I'm seeing this about 1 year after you made this video and am curious if you have started producing this tent it's a nice design and if you are producing it how much and where to order great job ! I wish I could sew (I've been a carpenter forever and sewing is impossible for me)
I haven't. You can sew! Of you don't want to get a sewing machine, hand sewing is always an option. If you don't want to do that, bonding seams instead of sewing them is an option too. In general, sewing is WAY easier than carpentry
@@Adventure_Logistics LOL you might be right I'm just a bit intimidated by sewing machines as the last time I used one was in a home ec classic in 1980 to sew a down vest let's just say I got an F and my teacher kept my failure to show future classes what NOT to do ✌️
Dude, were you in Mexico during your intro?
New Mexico
Graph at 2:30 is good but doesn't factor in the weight of cables or the power bank you need to carry to be charged by the solar panel.
It's just a rough comparison of the weight of a power bank vs the weight of solar panels. I didn't include the weight of cables in there but if I did, the chart would look the same, the numbers would just be a bit different.
@@Adventure_Logistics No, it will be offset with different breakevens.
@turkeyphant am i missing something? Both the panels and the power bank would need a cable
I didn't say otherwise. I said the chart was wrong.
Sick I wish I new how sew. Give the shap of your tent I’ll bet it can handle decent snow loads.
No merino wool
No. In general I like polyester (or similar synthetic materials) over wool because polyester fibers don't absorb water. This means that they dry significantly quicker which is very important on long trips.
@@Adventure_Logistics hows it pack ie compress
@@Adventure_Logistics how it smells after days on the trail compare to merino wool
If you're comparing pieces with equal insulative value, wool might pack slightly smaller (because wool fibers are hollow and insulate well), but not by much. After a long trip, polyester smells SIGNIFICANTLY worse than wool! It's definitely a sacrifice
@@Adventure_Logistics yeah been backpacking and bikepacking for over 35 years
Where is this location
It's Santa Marta, Colombia
Very cool
Where can i find dcf in europe?
