Building Santa Maria #part9 rigging starts and how I do ratlines.
Started rigging the ship, beginning with the standing rigging. Shrouds from mast to do the ratlines.
Also a word on how I weathered my sails. Close to being done now, I estimate 2-3 videos left before she’s done.

    Hey, I was wondering if you could tell me if the instructions are decent?

    • @TheBurningSail
      @TheBurningSail 2 дня назад

      It depends on your definition of decent? 😊 I think the plans are very good, I very rarely read the instructions as the pictures shows you what to do and those are excellent and very easy to follow. The masts and yards plans are 1/1 which is a great help when making them and doing the blocks, as they show you exactly where to put them. The difference between which blocks to use is also very easy too see as they included a diagram and given each block a letter. Ie Block D is a singular block etc. the rigging plans are also very easy to follow and shows which line goes where on the deck. I’ve only encountered one picture where I was in doubt in which size wood I had to use, but easily bounced back on. All in all, if this will be your first ship, there’s nothing to be “afraid” off and if you’re an experienced builder it’s a fun awesome little kit to do and have fun with, like I am. Hope this helps. 😁🫡 and thanks for watching. 🫶

      @nattattackss5047 no probably my friend. Polaris and Santa Maria are beginner ships. There’s a huge difference between them and a ship like Victory. Normally you start with the beginner ships and do a couple of those, then move up to medium ships before tackling one of those huge ships. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but experience is definitely a good thing to have before moving forward with the bigger ones. 😁 If you go to Occre webpage, they have plans on most if not all their ships you can download and have a look at. There you can see the plans for Santa Maria also. 🫡😊

    Please don't take my comments as a criticism of your building. I like the finish on the deck, caravels would have been pretty dirty, no swabbing of decks! And no nails! This is a stained hull, any filling of pin holes and planks will show! My pin pusher was thrown in the bin (along with an awful lot of other useless 'modellers tools!...Plank benders!!) about 30 years ago! I have a problem with OcCre's idea of planking the hull (similarly Mantua, who also make a Santa Maria) The first rule of planking is----No plank should finish at a point---Second is no plank should be tapered more than 2/3 of its width. Also the plank should follow the sheer of the deck, in this case the curve of the ply bulwarks. So in order to plank correctly a calculated taper and a lot of (mostly edge) bending is required. To anybody buying an OcCre kit I recommend a lot of kit bashing. Particularly as in this build the planking is left visible, not painted, so the plank pattern can be seen. This is one reason I don't recommend the run of the mill euro manufacturers, they are not moving with the competition. Especially a lot of Chinese (those that are bona fide) kits which are often a better quality! The only European manufacturer with a proper Santa Maria kit is Pavel Nikitin, but quality costs. As you are aware Facebook forums will provide all guidance required! I know there are some you could suggest! Again, if anyone wants to kit bash there are pictures of sailing replicas to use as a guide. Kits are notorious for inaccuracies, better to check the the replicas.

    • @homeharbour6238
      @homeharbour6238 2 месяца назад

      Hello. As you understand these videos and tutorials and followed by the instructions for the beginner's. So if the beginner will order an Occre kit may at the same time follow the instructions and videos of Chris. To do the "right" planking people need to have knowledge of it. So the instructions provide a simple way, but if your level is high you can always upgrade the kit instructions. All the best

    • @TheBurningSail
      @TheBurningSail 2 месяца назад

      Thank you for your thought 👌 I didn’t take it I’ll at all and I know what you mean and where you’re coming from. The different Santa Maria’s varies drastically from vendor to vendor and I’m assuming this is just Occre making their own version. I also have the AL version and that’s really different from the Occre one. Regarding planking, this is a beginner kit, like really for beginners, everything is very simple and easy to do. As I said in the video this is not the way I would choose to plank the hull, but for the sake that it’s a beginner ship and I’m making a somewhat tutorial for beginners I followed the instructions for the simple planking. It takes more than ones first ship to start getting adventurous with planking and I don’t want to give the feeling to a beginner that if he/she doesn’t do it the “right” way it’s not good enough. It’s just a hobby after all and everyone should feel welcome 🤗

    • @dugan6056
      @dugan6056 2 месяца назад

      @@TheBurningSail Thank you for your response. Perhaps I'm a little over zealous when it comes to planking, though many manufacturers are straight in with the dockyard method of laying strakes. Amati's Victory line for example (also they use a 1.5mm inner and a 1mm outer which is far easier than 2mm plus thin veneer! A better chance of edge bending with 1mm) I've mentored many people and I take pains to make dockyard planking as straightforward and concise as I can, it's my thing!! I think it's only the mainstream European kits who stick doggedly to the simple approach. I don't see them changing while people are still buying, but sooner or later the competition, offering good quality and good prices will have their effect. I do think that it would open a few eyes if you mentioned that although you are using your method that 'the alternative is.....' I've had many heated discussions about this with builders who maintain that the instructions say...therefore it must be correct!! It's worth remembering that kit designers are neither seamen or ship designers, but more in the line of toymakers. (people like Chris Watton and Chuck Passaro of course are a different breed!) Anyway, enough from me! Not so much a hobby, more a way of life!? Best wishes and happy building.

      @@dugan6056 I think I said something in the lines of “this is not the way I usually do it” however as it’s a beginner kit and someone might be building it with me, I think it would confuse more if I went in to an explanation about tapering the wood.
