Clip from interview with Dr. Amy Catlin and Dr. Frederick Liberman, Dec 1977 MDR talks about his background and he was initiated into Carnatic Music
❤❤❤
Thanks for posting this interview. Shri MDR style of singing is very unique. Am a great fan of is Hindolam Samaja vara gamana, which no one can even think that style. Pranams🙏
the day in 1979 when I heard somewhere "giripai" I was mesmerized by the voice and followed by lilting violin music. Then I came to know it was sung by Shri MD Ramanathan and the violin was by TN Krishnan, from that date onwards I was an ardent fan of those two masters. Unfortunately I was not able to witness physically his concert due to poor financial background at that point of time. Thanks to AIR and Doordarshan, and cassettes I was able to listen to their wonderful rendition. They were real artists who focused only on chaste music. very rare breed. Whenever I hear the sahana - giripai or Samayemidhe - kederam my heart use to melt. Thanks for posting wonderful video of his interview and also his home. Now I am 66 still attached to his music. One great thing was that in 2018 I attended TNKrishnan concert in Music academy and unfortunately within 2 years he passed away.
What a guru bhakti and humility demonstrated by Vidwan Sriramkumar Sir👋👋👋🙏🙏🙏🙏
Sir, Any chance to get those video recordings treasures from archives of Doordarshan...
We are all blessed - God has given the ability to enjoy this divine music of his beloved son Shri MD RAMANATHAN Sir
Famous critic Subbudu's brother Mr. Shastri was Director of A.I.R. and thro his effort got a a recording of a performance of AIR violin accompaniment is MSG Sir and mirdangam and ghatam artist not known .Without a doubt one of his best concerts available .It had Paridanaminchite Bilahari ,Sukhi Evvaro Kanada Tulsi jaga jannani Saveri his composition in Kedaram and Vagaladi in Behag .It was foolish of me not to have shared this concert as aldo another GNB concert with Lalgudi Jayaraman where he sings RTP Nattaikurinji and one more with Shri Chowdiah singing anther pallavi in the same ragam ,both these recordings were very bad ,If any one has the MDR concert please share .
Very nice 🙏
What a touching speech by Thiru. Shriram Kumar Sir. His reverence to the great legend MDR Sir is reflected. As an ardent rasika of the great legend, I could appreciate his bhakti and respect to MDR Sir. So awesome a presentation👋👋👋👋👋🙏🙏🙏. The talk generated goosebump in me🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏. Kodi namaskarams to the legend's son Shri. Balaji, the great legend's son, and also to Thiru. Thripunithura Krishnamurthy Sir for promoting the music of MDR Sir🙏🙏🙏 .

Invaluable information on MDR and his music 🙏
The kriti - brought tears. What a rendition.
Pranams to the legend🙏
God of music 🙏
All singing is not music But music something different Music come from soul Tagore
Dream come true Video. First, it’s the most revered Mahavidwan, Padmashree MDR’s video. Second, it’s the great artist performing the Puja - Bhakti with prayer through music.. Thank you dear Sri Balaji 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
True, we can not thank you enough. Especially for those who never had a chance to ever see him live, this is like amrutam.
It gave me goosebumps when I heard MDR Sir's son Balaji narrating some of his experiences with his father, the immortal legend mahavidwan MDR Sir. Yes, he said it right; many of MDR Sir's rasikas have not had seen or witnessed live any concert of the legend. Due to reasons beyond comprehension the great legend did not get the amount of recognition he deserved, but those who watched his music at least once would definitely be attracted to his unique style, bhakti, bhava, tala, laya, padacheda (splitting of lyrics), and depth of music, at the minuimum. The more someone hears his music the more the person would be attracted to the list of rasikas of MDR Sir. As always, a million thanks to the efforts taken by Shri Tripunithura Krishnamurth Sir in bringing out the scholarly talents of the great master❤👋👋🙏🙏 🙏🙏🙏
🙏🙏🙏 What a pleasant surprise. I was just thinking of him earlier today as an exemplar of sahitya shuddham and what I think of as bhaava shuddham, being able to reproduce the intent of the composer/composition. And then I providentially stumbled upon this :-) Good to hear directly from you on your illustrious father Balaji !
Thanks for sharing your personal recollections of your father, the great MDR.
While I was in Kalakshetra there was a small group of musicians such as this one, MD Ramanathan. All of us had to learn music, as a support to our dance lessons, and coming into contact with these great artists was such a gift! They were "old school", and lived for their art. When he is asked about the present, how classical musicians are accepted, can survive through their music, he is almost lost! He wouldn't have thought about this much, but sang and lived in his own musical world, steeped in the lessons of his guru and his tradition. I was fortunate to accompany him to the Thyagaraja Aradhana festival. All doors opened to us, because of his presence. Shrines closed for the afternoon were opened, and he burst into song again and again, purely for the deity! We were invited into the home of Shyama Shastri's descendent, and allowed to hold the Tambura knobs of one of Carnatic music's greatest composers. Nearly sixty years ago, a treasured experience!
The only music I listen to everyday is Shri MDR's. Everyday 2 hours minimum. 🙏
🙏🙏🙏
🙏🙏😊❤️
🙏✨
I have heard when MDR - Lalgudi - PMI used to perform.......most of the times.......MDR may not show the thalam, as it used to be his way of singing...........and the determination he had in his layam sense. .......and the accompanists were in sync with him to the extent that there won't be a lapse or a flaw in the eyes of watchful listeners.......
why is it cut at 15:45 ?
One of the greatest EVER!
A rare gem. Thank you Mr. Balaji Ramanathan. Hope you have some more videos of Shiri MDR's you could upload.

Great interview by MDR and good replies by him for every questions.
Balaji Sir, thank you so much for uploading this interview. MDR is one of my favourite musicians. I remember meeting him (my grandmother knew him) before a concert in Bangalore when I was about 4 or 5 years old. Paripalaya and Rama Rama are one of the first songs I remember and fell in love with
Meaningful pauses...love it. Great man ,,🙏 kudos to the poster of this clip and the lady interviewer. Her questions were excellent! Thank you.
Who can sing Nama kusuma like him?
🙇🏻♂️✨🎶
