I cannot describe the amount of pride I felt when I first hooked up a Game Console or VCR to my TV by myself as a preteen in the turn of the millennium. When I moved a satellite receiver in my college years from one room of my family’s home to another by running a long coax cable from the wall outlet in the original room, along the hallway and into the new room. When I utilized the preexisting coax setup in my current house with a splitter to have two different TV’s in separate rooms get reception from one single simple bunny ears aerial! When I replaced the cooling fan in my 2009 MacBook Pro! When I installed a graphics card into a prebuilt desktop for light gaming! When I put together my first gaming PC! Helping my friends with upgrades to their PC’s. Replacing a swollen battery in my GBA SP. Things that become much less daunting when you take a moment to mentally map where things are supposed to go, and you have access to web articles and videos to walk you through! I may not be as tech savvy as I’d like to be, but I’m happy that I know just enough to feel comfortable with the simpler DIY fixes, reduce some e-waste, and just experiment with creative solutions. I want that freedom to learn hands-on to be available for future generations!

It's sad that videos about Steve Jobs get hundreds of millions of views and he's considered a genius and gets ALL the praise for Apples innovations when his co-founder Steve Wozniak (the TRUE Genius and creator of Apple products) gets a measely 522,000 views and very little praise and is mostly unknown by Apples customers and fans. It's obvious that Apple is guilty of deliberately crippling basic compatibility with every other product and actively preventing their customers from being able to repair their own devices or allowing a choice of their own repair centre other than Apples in order to extort more money from their customers and gain monopoly over the entire global tech market. When even Steve Wozniak is in favour of their customers right to repair, you just know Apple is being evil and greedy and Apples valuation and assets are further proof of this.

Steve is on the light side, going against the dark. People like Steve bring hope to humanity. There’s too much dark and evil in the world right now. I’d trust this man and work for him. He doesn’t look like a typical self serving cold psychopathic manipulator CEO type of a guy. He genuinely cares about other people. We need to get rid of narcissistic cold manipulative self serving psychopaths and replace them with people who feel empathy, compassion and love towards fellow human beings

5:10 yeah that's something that's not apparent to people today. Back in the 70s, the phone company owned the actual telephones and you rented them as part of the bill. They would be fixed into the one socket, that is wired in place so you couldn't take the phone and connect it into the jack in another room.

I wish you never had left Apple, you might not have the focus on profitability like your namesake, and more significant, his tendency to impose limitations to your designs , but from an engineering standpoint you were 'the duck's guts' in my opinion. I now run a little computer repair shop in the Netherlands, and stopped servicing Apple devices because of those deliberatly designed limitations in their products. In short, I didn't like the course Apple took after you left, and despite their economical success, I still don't like their pollicy. Hope you're doing well and thank you for your vote for the rights to repair community!

Woz doez not understand a simple thing: if you open - you give free ideas to China. In TV era a schematic would contain tens of elements, maybe two hundred. Also, that scheme would be a result of work og 2-10 engineers at max. That is not very much of new ideas in every new TV set. Also, you cannot hide physical transistor-resistor board from copying, so what is the point of hiding the schematics? Nowadays the internals of CPU is an order of magnitude more complex and is a result of work of hundreds of engineers: logic schema, photo-chemical processes, topology, signal procesing. Tons of khow-how and intellectual property to protect! Also, CPU-like thing is hard to disassemble: no one will spend 100 years by 3D scanning internals of CPU and tracing everything in it wire-by-wire. The "cost of opening" nowadays is too high. The cost of developing schematics for new TV may be 0.05% of production cost of the TV. And almost everything related to TV "project" you can see by tearing it down by hands in your room. Current CPU have different ratio: the amount of intellectual work on the CPU is the same or LARGER than amount of intellectual work during the production of the CPU, also production details is hidden, because you cannot disassemble CPU and see how it was made too, so the intellectual property of the fabric construction is INCLUDED into the sum of total intellectual property behind the CPU. Also, each new CPU inherits the amount of intellectual property spend on previous generation of it, you you giving away everything you collected before. So opening is very costly: China start manufacturing your product without you and you have no job anymore and have no time to create new ideas, so you go working as garbage man and cannot afford sitting in chair and building your HAM radio anymore. Software development cost is not mentioned here: the OS itself, all the software that optimized CPU internals layout for you, all the testing software allowed you to simulate things and so on - TONS of complex scientific-based software made by specialists in different areas (materials, physics, electro-magnetic-emissions etc). Also, about "creative minds" at 8:45 - current creative minds create in information space, not in real world: creating is done my machines, you do the project/schema/code/vector-drawing. You dont need 512 GPIO ports at the back of MacBook anymore, you need lost of memory. Because all the creativity with electronics is DONE, people created everything they could: now is the time of information processing: look at signal filtering - nowadays it is done in code by FIR/IIR/FFT filters in FPGA or in code. Electric engineering is super niche area and automated as f*ck. 9:10 - "is it your computer or some company's computer" - the same applies to diamonds manufacturers or high-quality steel knives manufacturer of lamborgini engine's engineering or even cooking: when you buy a diamong or eat at some good restaurant: the creators of the product you consumed have no obligation to share recepie or technology with you; so when you eat at restaurant, you eat not your food!

      1. I don't think he means for CPUs to be repairable, just to not have them be soldered on. 2. The OS will be downloaded by some dude the moment that you release it, just look at hackintoshes. 3. The part about creating...I'm fairly certain that innovation in the hardware space still exists. Unless I'm misinterpreting your english. 4. Food is a throwaway product that's designed to be consumed once. It would be highly impractical to make a one-off product repairable. Car engines are repairable to some extent. And diamonds? They're a single chunk of shiny rock. Computers have multiple components.

Calling it the “right to repair” doesn’t fully capture the size of the problem. The problem is corporate ABUSE and EXPLOITATION of consumers. Look at Apple now (just one example of many) - they ILLEGALLY void your warranty if you open a phone, use coded components that don’t work in other devices, shut down functions if you attempt to repair something, and generally treat consumers like serfs on its digital plantation. The EU had to mandate them to include replaceable batteries, which all phones once had. A hundred years ago, the people fought back when corporations treated employees like serfs, with company stores, union busting, restrictive employment contracts, etc. Whole political movements and schools of thought were constructed around labor rights, the right to compete, and the importance of owning the means of production. Now, corporate owners are trying to prevent people even from owning the means of consumption. I’m sick of it.
