    All practical tests show that small wind turbines hardly generate any electricity! And only at very high costs! Because there is hardly any wind close to the ground. It is also extremely gusty, which usually shortens the service life extremely! Only if you need to be off grid & live close to the sea, you should install the largest possible wind turbine on a high mast. With solar modules, on the other hand, reliably generate electricity for 25 to 30 years at approx. 2% to 5% oft he cost of small wind turbines!

    Wind and sun are two different things. I made a bicycle generator that charges a 12v battery just by pedaling awhile. Exercise and power. Too bad all the gyms aren't like that....

    Lot of wrong data and information. Not worth investing in such small machine. They are not comparing with other wind machines, especially horizontal axis wind turbines.

    100 to 500 watts ? That’s nothing. The cost is prohibitive you don’t get much for 5k a pop.

      It says 550 watts for the bigger one, and the average home uses about 1100 watts.

      What? Greedy? You don't really have any idea what wind turbines costs huh? A cheap Chinese 6kWh turbine, producing around 15-20MW per year (in windy Scandinavia) will set you back around 40.000$, getting a quality European made 10kWh, producing 30-40MW will be around 70.000$. There's a lot more to it than just a generator attached to some wings. There's also LOTS of safety concerns to take into account Edit: The reason solar beats it, is because solar is dirt cheap to produce, compared to a turbine. Even when adding in a fairly sizable battery pack (which was done in this videos calculation, otherwise the numbers don't match) solar is still cheaper, in places where there's more sun. Let's take USA as an example, around Portland and Rhode Island it's very likely that a turbine will be a better choice than solar, because of minimal sun compared to wind. The opposite is true for Florida and Texas. If we take Scandinavia where i'm from, wind turbine are by far the best choice, BUT due to noise pollution/laws, we aren't actually allowed to setup these "mini" 6-10 kWh turbines in 90% of all homes. This cool product solves that issue

    Why is there even a debate? Vawts turn at lower wind speeds. Are compact, and simply they are fun to watch. And are more efficient. Here's the better mouse trap.

    Why worry about efficiency, wind is free! Factor in less noise, less space occupied, easier maintenance, less foundational strength requirement. IMHO vertical wind turbine is the winner.

    It's really too bad that engineers have not been able to come up with affordable wind turbines for home use that can really exploit the wind to the fullest. Many of us who live in coastal areas with constant winds see the potential, but also understand that NOTHING currently on the market is really viable. The devices either cost so much that they payoff wouldn't come for 50 years, or they generate just enough electricity to power a table lamp. Solar and biogas are clearly the only viable options.

      True, especially as solar and wind would complement each other really well and give a more consistent power generating, which could also reduce the amount of batteries needed. Problem is, when it comes to wind power on the small scale, there's so many scams and disinformation on them that it's not easy to figure out what works or not, but the impression is that they don't generate meaningful energy in urban areas. I also feel vertical wind turbines would be far more appealing for homeowners and if they can crack it where they generate a decent amount of energy in urban areas, a mix of solar and wind would be a game changer for homeowners. On the plus side, there are a lot of companies experimenting with different vertical wind turbine designs, but until we see any on the market with solid numbers that they work in urban areas, then I feel more solar is the best route to go with how cheap it's getting, at least for homeowners.
