The Hayduke series is back!
Sink or Swim in the Grand Canyon - the Hayduke: part 5
Into the Grand Canyon we go…
Hi! Thanks for watching our Hayduke series. This is our favorite episode yet.
(QUICK BACKGROUND) The Hayduke Trail is an 800 mile hiking route across southern Utah and northern Arizona. Before the hike, we buried food and water at six different locations to help us on our journey.
EPISODE FIVE begins with Jarhead hiking to one of the food caches we buried. We had enough food to hike all the way to the North Rim Trailhead, six days away. The weather was hot and we had to be very careful about staying hydrated.
Some of our favorite parts were:
- fording the beautiful turquoise blue water of the Little Colorado River

We're back :) The Hayduke Trail is an 800 mile hiking route through southern Utah and northern Arizona across rugged, remote terrain. This video covers nearly 250 miles of hiking through the Pariah Wilderness, Bryce Canyon, the Grand Staircase National Monument, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. "Part 4" starts after a gnarly 25 mile bushwhack down Escalante River. Dirty’s foot was really ...

We’ve been hiking a lot this summer and been slowly chipping away at the rest of our Hayduke series. New episodes starting next week. For the past three summers we have lived out of the Honda Pilot. It’s a great way to stay mobile and live simply in our public lands. T...

Hi! Welcome back. The Hayduke is an 800 mile hiking route across the remote backcountry of Utah and Arizona. It took us 65 days to complete. In “part three,” we started this tough 120 mile section near the small town of Hanksville and ended at “Hole-in-the-Rock Road” outside of Escalante, Utah. We took a double zero in Hanksville to rest and recover from the brutal hiking we did in “the hayduke...

what's an internal frame?
It supports all your internalized fears. Free the frame before it’s too late!
I watched all of your videos... I think it's the soundtrack that got me hooked.
That’s so cool! We like the desert western vibe too 🤠🎶
McDonald's Coke!!!!💙
An incredible feeling haha! 🥤
Love you guys! 💙
❤️🙏❤️
You guys are really fun to watch, thanks.
Just coming across your channel now. Which packs are you guys using?
We are using the Palante Desert packs palantepacks.com/
Thank you for quoting ABBEY! Don't agree with everything he ever wrote or said but still one of my favorite authors. I truly appreciate it. And this 70 plus year old guy thanks you too for mentioning Uncle Don.
Absolutely, we like his quote about wilderness being a necessity. It feels very true to us. Uncle Don was probably the most inspiring thing on the whole hayduke haha. We’re glad you enjoyed it :)
Hey guys, great vid! It was quite the adventure 'down there', great to see it again and reminisce. Happy you could salvage some of Uncle Don, I'll share it with him. Cheers! TC
Hey TC thanks! Hanging out with you guys was the best part. We always thought it was funny when Don would say “ten more miles?” after you guys ate dinner. Thanks for keep us sane with cherry pop tarts down there lol
Hey Avo, Jar, TC, UD, Jup, Sprock, Hil.... it WAS a great adventure, even for me and my trusty Subie! Thanks!
@susanferguson5622 Pika! You definitely had an adventure on all those dirt roads haha. Your subie was always a beautiful sight. We appreciate you ❤️
I'm so enjoying your journey; thank you so much for sharing. The GC is stunning in so many ways. I still feel for DA and her achilles - amazing that you can keep on keepin' on.
Thank you 🙏🙏 the Grand Canyon is definitely a place that lingers in the mind long after you’re gone
I love your video and narration style!
What a great video, the views are amazing, great narration style, and cool music. The only thing I wish improved is Dirty's achilles; I hope you get to the end without too much suffering.
Thanks so much, we’re glad you enjoyed it :) the achillies was very frustrating, but some new shoes and a heel insert helped. I couldn’t stop so close to the end haha!
Absolutely love following y'all! (actually found you because you also adventure in a Honda Pilot.) I got a huge smile out of the waterfall shot on May 22nd as it was so beautiful, and that's my bday. Can't wait for the next installment!
A fellow Honda adventurer! That’s awesome. Where do you like to travel to in the Pilot? The waterfalls were incredible. It was the perfect way to cool down in the heat. We’re glad you enjoyed :)
@dirtyjarhikes we just got back into adventuring this past summer when we did a cross-country drive with our 3 kids, and we're back to camping (we have a Honda tent for the pilot) with our younger two (9 & 16). We're planning a north western route for summer 2025 to hit Olympic, Glacier, Grand Tetons and the Badlands. We all just watched your Hayduke series together, and now our daughter wants to do it as a family adventure lol.
@holidayroad5 wow that’s amazing! La Push in Olympic NP is a great place to see the ocean. You can’t go wrong anywhere in glacier too. There’s a lot of beautiful and remote car camping in Utah, specifically near Hanksville or Escalante. The night sky and stars are crystal clear. Your daughters are lucky to see such wonderful places across the country! We support all their hiking aspirations!
@dirtyjarhikes thanks so much for thr heads-up! Oh, we're also going to hit Arches and we really want to make it to Zion, but mainly for the subway and we think it might be too technical for our 9 year old (he's an adventurer, but I read that hike can be rough in spots.) Have you been to Great Basin NP? If so, is it worth a couple day stop?
Amazingly inspiring Love your story ❤
Thank you so much 😊
Great video! Such beauty! You mentioned Edward Abbey, can you imagine all this in the 50’s? About the achilles heel, have you tried different shoes? That worked for me. Looking forward to next episode!
Thanks! It’s hard to imagine the canyon in 1950, or 1850, or 1050 haha. So much has changed yet so much remains. The book “The Emerald Mile” does a great job at explains how the canyon was formed. I bought different shoes in Kanab (and a heal insert) and that helped. Thanks for watching 🙏
Finally, someone mentions the color of the Little Colorado. Good stuff, y'all.
The color was amazing. We read the Little Colorado is often silty and brown so we felt very lucky to see it turquoise.
great content.
You both are totally amazing and rocked the GCs!! Can’t wait to see the grand finale!!
Finally got around to watching this episode and was super excited to see your timing scored a visit with Jupiter and Sprocket. The injury worked out. Legends, all 4 of y’all.
Thanks :) it was really fun seeing Jupiter and sprocket in town to swap trail stories. It helped keep us sane haha
Great video. Just wanted to say that keeping the food quality higher long term, helps prevent injury and helps us heal. Wishing you the best
That’s great advice. Healthy living definitely helps in so many aspects of life. Thanks for watching :)
I’m so glad we stumbled on your channel and have been following your Hayduke adventure. We gave you a ride from Hole in the Rock Road to Escalante Outfitters for their yummy pizza.
Hi! Thank you so much for saving us on the side of the road. It was such a relief when you stopped! It was fun talking to you guys after the long bumpy ride. We hope you had a great trip in Utah :)
I like that it’s so big. Y’all are badass!❤
Haha us too. It feels like there’s so many hidden places and mysteries under the rim.
yeah sprite !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤😊
Sprite is good for the soul haha!!
@dirtyjarhikes YEAH IT SURE MAKES MY SOULFEEL ' SPRITE ' LOL !!!!
Thanks for watching :) what do you like about the Grand Canyon?
@@dirtyjarhikes U NAME IT AMIGO !!
🎉🎉🎉 nice thumbnail. Very glisteny
🦵✨
Loved this one! Listening to you both talk about what you love about being on the trail inspired me.
Yay! Being on trail is our happy place :)
Love this video series and I'm glad the next one is out!! Just so ya know, the locals pronounce it escalan-tay and pah-ree-uh.
Thanks so much :) we liked the local who said esca-lan-tee. Such a friendly town.
That clip where you two are just sitting with your backs against the wall and eating gave me so much trail nostalgia!
Love that 😊😊
Thank you two for the awesome video and letting us hang out with you! I love your storytelling style and vibe. Even through video that "trail" looks very challenging. And super rewarding!! Stay stoked you two!
That’s awesome to hear :) you’re right! it was a challenging and rewarding hike. It’s fun to look back on the footage now and relive some of it.
Welcome back!
The best thing I did for my Achilles was giving up on Altra shoes and using heal lifts in all of my shoes. They make a world of difference for me. It took quite a long time for them to heal. I really pray you find relief. Chronic Achilles pain can definitely suck!! 🙏
That’s really good advice. I used a heal lift and it helped. Thanks for the achillies prayers 🙏
Finally! Part 4! Looking forward to this.
We appreciate it. Hope you enjoy :)
I heard for more from Sprocket on your channel than Jupiter's series combined.
Every video of yours gives me motivation to go out into nature, you are special and beautiful ❤
You are so sweet ❤️ nature is the best!
Been waiting for this next segment to appear. I'm watching Jupiter's videos also. It is so fun to see video of the coolest hike ever. And hardest! I'm planning to visit Escalante again next spring and have become inspired to add some Grand Canyon to the trip as well. I sure hope DA's Achilles is improved; I'm amazed that she's keeping on. Looking forward to your next segment!
Escalante was our favorite town! We really liked the pizza at the gear store. If the north rim is open when you visit, driving down “dog saddle road” to the overlook is incredible. It’s a very unique view into the canyon.
Bumping into Jupiter, 🐐wow and the gentle hint meeting some of our friends 🤙🏽 Way Cool❤
Jupiter and Sprocket are certified mountains 🐐 🐐 it was fun to hear about their love for the wilderness
Hope your achilles gets better! Thank you for sharing this awesome adventure.
Thanks for watching :) it’s beautiful country out there 🏜️
This episode was absolutely lovely! Super cool to see Jupiter and Sprocket, too. Enjoy, guys!
Thanks for watching :) hiking can really lead to some lovely moments
yes, finally the next part!!! <3
Adorable vid guys! When I am missing trail life it's watching videos of yours that most make me feel like I am back out there. Thankyou
Thanks :) we like watching videos when we miss trail life too haha. Trail is such a good place to be.
imo it's difficult to make an entertaining hiking vid. but you guyz did it. i was invested all the way to 20:37. thanks.
Thank you :) we really enjoy being out there and seeing different parts of the country. Utah was very unique.
My son lived out of my van while hiking the BC Rockies for a couple months, and a $30 ac inverter off Amazon worked great for powering his lap top from the van's lighter socket. This will let you use your laptop in the SUV without having to go to libraries or coffee shops! Thanks for your videos, you're my fave hiking channel.
That’s an awesome idea! We will look into an ac inverter. Your son’s BC adventures sound very cool. We would like to hike in Canada. It seems gorgeous.
We use the Bestek one, it works great for us. I hope you guys get out to the GDT some day. My son did most of it and its #1 on my bucket list when I retire!
@DDF1408 the GDT is exactly what we want to do! Someone told us it feels like the Rocky Mountains on steroids because everything is so incredibly beautiful. That’s an awesome bucket list item.
His pictures were incredible! No 10k footers but parts are super remote and he didn't see people for days on end. Long food carries at the end. Long pants needed for some sections with the brush. Hard part is getting permits for the national parks and then hitting those windows, but nothing new there for you guys. Jupiter had a few videos on it (did it same time as my son and they met a few times). I hear the wildfires this year may have affected some routes. Hope you guys get out there!
😅 great job u2 !!!!! those that thirst 2gthr r sticy glued 2gthr !!!😂😅😅❤😊 ATB amigos
so now u 2r done.. in hind sight what waterwise would u do different ????
As much as it sucks, probably just carry more, haha!
what does the map say ???? i dont know ive never heard one talk 😂😅😮
Haha google maps doesn’t talk to us out here!
I sure hope Dirty's achilles cooperates in the Grand Canyon. My wife and I love your laid back style of filming. Great vibe!! Running in to Jupiter and Sprocket looked like a blast. Glad they let you interview them. You all motivate us to get out and hike!! Looking forward to more adventures.
We're glad you like the vibe! Hiking with Jupiter and Sprocket was a lot of fun. Have fun on your next hike :)
The scene when you guys are just sitting down munching on your snacks, that’s what life is all about. Enjoying life through the simple things and being in the moment. Jupiter and Sprocket, what a pleasant surprise. I also follow them. You all are bad asses!!!
We really like sitting and eating snacks! It's our favorite thing. Thanks so much :)
How empty must be your life to watch that ! Even on 2× speed and ff button ... two min and out
@RileySP-j7n hell yeah brother 🤙
Awesome video! I love your narrative style!
That means a lot to us, thank you so much. Can't wait to share a couple more...
Milo really liked the caterpillar shot . I love this series! I can’t wait for more episodes ✨💗
Jupiter and Sprocket crossover! Thanks for all the hard work and taking us along with you on the journey
Yay! Spoiler alert: We never saw them again after that, haha! Thank you so much for watching and stay tuned for the next.
