For reading this far, here's some trivia. This is something I've always found funny about Forest Dreams, but never got a chance to talk about: In the tumblr post, Toby said that the motif at 0:41-the gaster-like motif-is similar to White (a song from the homestuck OST that Toby made). Go listen to that, if you haven't. Toby didn't claim that they are the same motif (because, they aren't). But it's still funny to me that he even called the two "similar"! I feel like nowadays, in an effort to not be called "crazy theorist" or something, Deltarune fans can overexaggerate the barrier of evidence that you need in order to make a theory, or assert a connection. Case in point: literally today. There was that twitter post where Forest Dreams was mentioned in relation to Gaster's Theme. A ton of people in the comments are saying "noo, it's not remotely similar gaster's theme at ALL". Despite having the literal exact same notes... Because apparently to the fans, if your case isn't 100% solid, then your theory is completely invalid. But then you have Toby saying WHITE of all songs is similar to gaster's arpeggio??? Huh??? lmao It's just a nice reminder, I mean. It's good to have _some_ level of skepticism, so you aren't looking at literally every song and saying "omg gaster". But also, like...It's not that serious. Idk Does this make sense??? Idk. Ok byeee ✨✨✨

Wait, someone found what I’ve been yelling about for years? lol. Why is this getting more attention now? Ah, just seeing your reply. So a random twitter post? Interesting. I knew this was too good to stay hidden for long. It recontextualizes Gaster's whole character and I'm convinced of that with this song. A bit speculative for most people's tastes, but the evidence is there and falls in line with Toby's pattern of storytelling. Oh well, maybe we can come back to this in another few years as we get more chapters. Perhaps we'll be proven right ;)

@@Hrogthar oh, it wasn't really a _random_ twitter post, it was the daily toby fox trivia account. honestly, i don't think the song itself has anything to do with gaster character-wise. i think the melody was just reused. i see your comment about the song being Hidden, but the song wasn't intended to be hidden really. toby posted it publicly on tumblr-it's just that gaster's theme wasn't known back when it was posted in 2012. and by the time undertale released, toby had deleted a lot of his tumblr posts. i do think the song itself could get reused for deltarune though. i mean, it's already made and it sounds pretty nice! we'll just have to see

@@pkchiptune Oh okay, that's interesting. Most of the context that I'm getting from the song is actually the sound of the song itself. It's not the typical horror type sound that we're used to with the Gaster motif, and makes it more somber/whimsical. It's from the time period where I think it's too substantial to Deltarune to ignore.

This honestly is kinda a recent discussion on Twitter, Toby Fox Trivia just shared this and people in the comments start typing "☝️🤓 erm actually it's just 4 notes" even though it's with the exact same instrument and sounds identical, idk how people are just denying this

Hopes and Dreams is my favorite video game track ever, and the UNDERTALE True End is my favorite game ending ever. I think only Toby can top those two things with the end of DELTARUNE and maybe a finished version of this track. Whatever he's planning to show us, I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

hmm, personally i don't think that 3:13 part is supposed to be once upon a time. the notes don't quite line up. if anything, it sounds more similar to 1:03 of Lifdoff, another homestuck song also worth noting: this version of penumbra comes from 2017, and it's the only version to have that tenor piano melody

@@pkchiptune Idk about you but that tenor piano is like exactly the beginning of Hopes and Dreams, which is an altered version of Once Upon a Time. And if anything that part only being in this 2017 version (which I feel like I should note that this is the only official full version of Penumbra Phantasm) only seems to solidify that it's Once Upon a Time, if it came out after Undertale.

​@@TheAdvertisement ​i mean? the surface similarity is definitely there, but i don't think it's the same motif. the notes are a bit off to be clear, we're talking about 0:45 of hopes & dreams, and 0:58 of Once upon a time, right? that's the part that sounds similar to me. also, there's another full-ish version of penumbra, awakeningcrap2.mid. and that version doesn't have the part from 3:13 of this one
