    Hand and foot conditioning really hurt Karate, and the Japanese changed what came to them from Okinawan, and its focus was health to college ages kids and health. One must seperate Okinawa, and Japan. Karate, and power, and all that are not the same. Even Kara is different. I have studied Isshinryu, and it was focusing on real world use as taught by the founder. But I also studied Tang Soo Do, and that is a branch of Shotokan, and one can see how much things changed. Also when they added and focused on adding kicks into Karate that were not a part of the art, it in my view changed many things in Karate. And all that evolved into Tae Kwon Do. This was a good talk sir, thank you.

    Great video man. You bring up a lot of really important points. Something that I think is really relevant here is that traditionally martial arts really had a lot more to do with weapons. The unarmed stuff played a small, supplemental role. That or it was more like a sport or pastime. This a problem I have with a lot of “practical” karate type rhetoric. There’s this underlying assumption that martial arts were originally more functional and directly applicable and I think this is true in a general sense. What’s often overlooked though is that as martial arts developed in modern times, and the emphasis became more on the unarmed stuff, that’s when this new approach that was more about self-development came to be. I would really suggest checking out Andreas Quast’s books. He has one that gives a general overview of Okinawan martial arts history and it’s mostly about weapons based stuff.

    I trained karate since I was 5 years old and transitioned to kickboxing when I was 25 and since then I am doing it. And I really experimented with lots of techniques. But I agree with him. Because many karate techniques take lot of years to develop, and have higher risk for injury. I know that because I also teach martial arts and also teached karate techniques for combat sports (full contact). And actually what he is saying is from efficiency point and from point of time that it takes to develop. And I know this from experience I am 42 and have 15 years of teaching. Although I do all this techniques (because of my 20 years in karate) they are not that useful for many people that are not in martial arts fom young years and that are not training methodically like it's done in karate. Although the back fist is more for boxing for that I agree, but for kick boxing and mma not so much (except the turning back fist).

      @@MarkoObradovich I’d disagree on the backfist. My Muay Thai coach does it and he fights in one. However, I get your point on efficiency. In some cases there are more efficient uses of time like the ridgehand and even the two handed strikes if you use them as strikes so that makes sense

    All these things a lot of people say about karate is because they don’t understand how ORIGINAL karate was practiced. They conditioned everything in the body to the point that hands and feet were like bricks. If you condition your hands the old way I guarantee you can know anyone out with let’s say a ridge hand. If you don’t believe me, search Shijo Kiyohide sensei from Okinawa. 9 times karate full contact champion.

    The yama suki is neither a takedown nor a double punch. That move is an anti grappling technique. You shift the leverage of the lead hand to get out of a wrist grab and the overhand punch is basically the most realistic available weapon

    Alis jab is called a flick jab.. it is not a back fist. In karate it is taught to use the blade of the foot to strike with ALL side kicks. Wich is wrong regardless what the original intention was. The ridge hand in the karate combat clip was just a sloppy overhand. He had a closed fist and just landed with the wrong part of the fist. Joker.

    • @StrykeTeamOfficial
      @StrykeTeamOfficial 19 дней назад

      @@madanalym4165 the guy talking about Ali’s jab literally trained and learned it from Ali. Said it was the same thing himself and is himself a champion who has commented on this video. A flicker jab and a back fist, depending on the kung fu style, are applied the same way. You’re literally disagreeing with a guy who trained with Ali on this one. Also in karate it is NOT taught to kick with the blade of the foot with all kicks. The side kick Gabriel uses is also a Karate kick and is equally popular especially in sports karate. Gabriel also knows this. He was specifically just talking about that one style of kick not actually all styles of karate side kicks. Dude… are you serious right now. They’re illegal in almost every gloved combat sport due to the surface area you’re hitting with. There are other videos of it landing in some older fights though. However, I even said I thought the overhand was better in this video. 🙄 you just like to argue

  • @madanalym4165

    Im late to the party, but i just found this video. Using the blade of the foot os twight when throwing all side kicks to any part of the body in karate. Like Gabriel said,this is dangerous to rhe kicker. Second of all, the fact that this guy is demonstrating side kicks to the knee as the correct way to do it shows he has zero understanding of actual combat. You dont throw side kicks to the knees at extreme close range, there are many other techniques that are much mlre effective. Tou would throw a side kick to the knee from range, not in close quarters. Gabriel Vargas is a world champion fighter. You keep seperating the "sport"side of Gabriels argument.. but the fact is he is tried and tested in full contact fighting. I heard a qoute before, karate only works if your opponent is also doing karate. Very true.

      I may not be gabriel but I have over 16 full contact fights myself. Most of my coaches fought or are fighting professionally. 3 of them have credentials equal to Varga. • @madanalym4165
      @madanalym4165 19 дней назад

      @StrykeTeamOfficial You absolutely can side kick a knee in a street fight. What I said was at the extremely CLOSE RANGE you demonstrated in the video, a side kick to the knee is not a good choice. Further out would be better range for that technique.

    • @StrykeTeamOfficial
      @StrykeTeamOfficial 18 дней назад

      @@madanalym4165 except that is a very effective move from that range that a large number of self defense systems use. You say this but don’t actually explain why. If people can use a China wall or other leg frame techniques why can’t you use a stomp to break the side of the knee and possibly end the fight. The knee stop from the front angle, the one that is legal in mma” is better at range because the target is in front of you. The one I am demonstrating is to the side of the knee which is the part that is easier to break and causes long term injury and is illegal in sport. That angle makes it very difficult to hit head on.

Its got power, speed, saftey, smooth flow. etc. ur not reaally gonna get some speical secret counter that is better than what boxing has already trained. and the youtuver here. saying htat u can use a backhand in these little ways. but i think gabreil is just saying like hey a slip to a overhand right is better than some kind of backhand thing. which i can get behind 100%

    Interesting application of the bladed foot side kick... I can see a situation where you're controlling the hands from range, or in a loose clinching situation (what we see Jon Jones or Anderson Silva excel at). Similar to the teep to the thigh/hip, or throwing an oblique kick to the knee, the bladed side kick can also be throw towards the inner thigh or knee to disrupt base/balance and set up more savage attacks. In conclusion, I can see an interesting use case in MMA or even Muay Thai, but you would obviously need to excel at range management, hand controls, clinching, and fighting in general. Gabriel should spar with Wonderboy for some fun Karate vs. Kickboxing content.

    I rewatched some parts and I would like to say you're totally right about Savate. I practiced Shotokan during 7 years when I was kid/teen, and 1 year Savate when 20'. After 3 mounths, Savate became my core/base system, and Karate became auxiliary. I gives me so much so fast, particullary about guard, protecting the face, and using/defending against low kicks, that are lacking in Shotokan and sport Karate. Savate's main limit is probably the throws aspect you can find in Sanda. For now I study Krav Maga, and our teacher trains us mostly on some complementary aspects as Judo/Aikido/Jujutsu, some basic boxing and Muay Thaï stuff, and eventually some aspects you can find in wing chun/tai chi.

      HAHA hes just a shotokan guy which wasn't made with the same ideas in mine as the original Okinawan stuff. He's also just very focused on competition stuff only so he just isnt looking at every angle.

    About getting the position to use the technique, I learnt something very interesting from chess. You never look to get the position to apply the special technique. You just use some unbalances advantages or counterplays and tries to improve your position to be better and better, and your opponent whorst and whorst, until an opportunity cames to you. And when it cames, most of the time, the good move is quite simple, and using a special move or just following to improve your advantages leads to win anyways. And that's why a lot of begginers or intermediate players are very frustrated to be technically/tactically skilled but never have the opportunity to use it and been beaten by some basics/easy ways. It seems to be the same with martial arts and combat sports.

    Sanda is missing despite being relatively popular. Another core base system. What about "Ju-jutsu fighting system" and "ju-jitsu contact" (like this : ruclips.net/video/Ji9y8LG9tu0/видео.html) ? What do you think of Muay Boran, Letwei, Bokator and other muay thai derivates ?

    This was a pretty fair breakdown. I just started karate, Tang soo Do style the side kick was spot on, and in boxing The back fist is our flicker jab, and it does help firing it from a cross guard or philly shell especially with speed, it can setup combos or blind the opponent to angle out and get distance from your opponent.
