Hey professor Almena, This is Jamez from your GDSN 164 class. I just wanted to say thank you for all these lessons and being a great person to teach us how to get ourselves into the design space. Had an amazing time in the class and wow it's been over 2 years since I was a student in the class. Hope you are doing well. As for me, I've been doing a lot more graphic design projects on my own for smaller groups and it's been fun to do these.
@@VorileBemx Hey Jamez! Thank you so much for your kind words; it really means a lot to hear from former students like yourself. I’m thrilled to hear that you’ve continued working on graphic design projects and are having fun with them. Keep pushing yourself creatively and enjoy the journey-it’s amazing to see where your skills will take you. Wishing you all the best with your future design work. Stay in touch, and take care!
Can you suggest some of your favourite books on packaging design and research?
Excellent.
Glad you enjoyed the class!
Thanks for this, Professor
You're very welcome Emmanuel. Much success to your Value Based Pricing Journey!
Just water... I just don't know about that. I mean props to them for trying to address the issue, but I mean in first world countries individual bottled water is just not sustainable in itself. Also as much effort as they have put in its reduction is likely not as much as one is lead to believe. Sure paper, aluminium and some plastics are recyclable on their own, but not mixed. By binding aluminium to paper and then also to plastic this has just become a complex item that is not recyclable. Perhaps best is it can be burnt and maybe some aluminium reused. Otherwise thanks for the presentation
Thank you so much for this video. Just found out the channel. I went through the channel, and I'm honestly mind blown. Currently binge watching through every single video
Happy to help Emmanuel. Enjoy the content and I hope to add more elements and principles content this year!
That'll be great. Thank you
Some attention needs to be given to PowerPoint design for this presentation eg text size; visibility of some headings
Thank you John for the insight. I'm planning to expand on this content and make the needed updates to the presentation. Thanks for watching!
A guy in fleece sweater lecturing about use of plastic. Classic environmentalist, hahah. here to listen about packaging design, not to grow soy, lol
where is part 1 ?
Here is Part 1 - ruclips.net/video/EdLvD6_37D4/видео.html&loop=0
Thanks for watching!
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it Valene!
The barrier between water and carton is plastic, polyethylene most likely. Don't fall for green washing tricks!
Microplastics were found in sealed Dasani water bottles. Ugh
It can be frustrating but I believe we can transition to a more sustainable future!
Wonderful presentation
be regular .
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
The irony is that Fabuloso with its “bad” design is owned by Colgate-Palmolive and sells millions of dollars in USA and Latam. (A leader with 12 .44% market) While I could not find the Kindred brand sample you showed. It’s not even a blip in the radar of the marketplace. From the business standpoint. It doesn’t matter how “bad” is a design as long as it sells. To change Fabuloso’s design to make it “good” would be disastrous. Remember the mistake PepsiCo made with Tropicana?
While it is true that Fabuloso, despite its "bad" design, is owned by Colgate-Palmolive and sells millions of dollars in the USA and Latin America, it does not necessarily mean that the design is the sole reason for its success. Other factors, such as marketing, brand recognition, distribution channels, and product quality, also play a significant role in its sales. Moreover, just because the Kindred brand sample was not found or is not as popular as Fabuloso, it does not mean that the design of the Kindred brand is the reason for its lack of success. Other factors, such as distribution channels, marketing efforts, and consumer preferences, could also be at play. In terms of the argument that changing Fabuloso's design to make it "good" would be disastrous, it is important to note that design is not just about aesthetics but also about function and user experience. A well-designed product can increase user satisfaction, build brand loyalty, and ultimately lead to increased sales. While the example of PepsiCo's mistake with Tropicana is valid, it is important to note that the redesign was not solely to improve the design but rather a complete rebranding effort. The new design was met with strong negative reactions from consumers, leading to a decline in sales. However, this does not mean that all redesigns are doomed to fail. Many successful redesigns have occurred, resulting in increased sales and customer satisfaction. While a "bad" design may not necessarily hinder a product's success, it is not the only factor at play. A well-designed product can lead to increased sales and customer satisfaction, and a redesign should not be dismissed outright as disastrous. It’s also important to note that in recent years, there has been a growing trend towards eco-friendly and health-conscious cleaning products, which may pose a challenge to the long-term success of products like Fabuloso that contain potentially harmful ingredients. Just last month (Feb 2023) 4.9 million bottles were recalled because their multi-purpose cleaner “can contain Pseudomonas species bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas fluorescens, which are environmental organisms found widely in soil and water. People with weakened immune systems, external medical devices, or underlying lung conditions who are exposed to the bacteria face a risk of serious infection that may require medical treatment.“ In light of this, it is reasonable to argue that a redesign of Fabuloso's packaging and labeling to reflect more eco-friendly and health-conscious values could be a wise business move for Colgate-Palmolive in the long run. Thanks for watching and sharing thoughts Ivan!
@@MiguelAlmenaVisual you happen to be right on your assessments. Many factors take a role besides design. Marketing muscle being the most critical. Look at Corona Beer. The graphic design of the “label” is disastrous. ( it’s actually a baked in silkscreen print on the bottle). Any beer enthusiast/ connoisseur will tell you that Corona is a bad beer. The clear bottle contributes to the quick degradation of flavor due to light exposure. There is a reason why all other beers are bottled in dark bottles. But despite that Corona’s flavor is two levels below horse’s urine and that its design is very poor. The marketing muscle behind AB InBev/ Constellation Brands positioned Corona as the most imported beer in the USA.
you should make more of this, great content!
Thank you Marko. I have thought about expanding this into a series or entire channel.

Hi bitmonki. These are part of my teaching curriculum at Rio Hondo College in Los Angeles, California but it's a content blend of my industry experience working at The Walt Disney Company as well. Glad you enjoyed the lectures! :)
you are amazing♥️ these are all helpful, I'll definitely be watching the rest of your videos. thank u so much 🥰
You're welcome Jerah! :)
Great video and loved these tips, do you consider it bad design based on design principles/rules or is it based on how much or little sales a business generates based on the design?
This is a great question DeJean! It's bad design based on the design/visual principles. A sale is a transaction from a customer and seller. What goes into that exchange is a lot of other things outside of design like the impression of the brand to the type of store I'm buying and with technology it now includes how socially responsible the company is. People are smarter about buying so a sale is really about how I relate to the brand from who I am buying from. Does this make sense? Even if the design is spectacular I won't buy if I don't like what you are about and how you treat people. Great question!
@@MiguelAlmenaVisual really helpful, that makes complete sense. Thanks for the reply & great video
