So Coleridge says the primary imagination is original, yet composes a Poem which is influenced by Worsorth's ? How does that work?

I think the distinction is that the imagination is originating, not necessarily original: it creates the material for crafting the poem. For Coleridge, the originality comes from the way of seeing (the product of the "primary imagination") as reflected in the composition (the product of the "secondary imagination"), not necessarily the subject matter of the poem, which, indeed, could be the object perceived through the power of the imagination. Also, if we're discussing "Dejection," the poem is about the loss of imagination and its ability to bring nature to life; the poem is actually about the failure of the imagination to enliven objects, which, as objects, are fixed and dead, Coleridge tells us. The fact that Coleridge's poem about his failure of imagination is inspired by another poem (Wordsworth's "Immortality Ode") about the loss of the power of the imagination as we grow older is simply a different perspective on a similar topic.

These have been tremendously helpful. I want to dive much deeper into Wordsworth and Coleridge now, though I think I prefer Coleridge. Thank you for sharing these! I enjoy hearing your comments about SoCal. I grew up in and spent most of my life in the San Bernardino mountains.

Wonderful! Lewis shares in the beginning of this teaching what he experienced when his own teacher said that this was an amazing poem, one of his favorites... .Lewis thought 'No Way!!! This teacher is crazy! But his teacher changed his mind. I'm so grateful to his teacher... and to him, because I too have found through this lecture that The Love Song of J Alfred is indeed an amazing poem and now one of my favorites too😁 and it continues releasing many hidden gems. This great lecture sparks much more for me than 'analysis of a poem' and Im enjoying listening to Lewis's other teachings too. One of the great gifts of Covid lockdown - a committed passionate teacher is available around the globe.😁😁 Welcome to New Zealand and thanks so much Lewis, I'm in your class👌
