    Terrific topic of discussion. About a year ago, I asked my city and power company to install a shield over the new very bright LED lamp in front of my house, which projected so much light at night my grass looked bright green and I could read fine print on a page. It took some time to get the shield installed, and required many nagging phone calls to the city where I live to make it happen (NC, US). But the difference now is amazing when I go out with my telescope. I still live in a very bright city (approx. mpsas 18.5 or Bortle 8 most nights), but at least I am now able to enjoy using my telescope without incredibly disrupting glare from an overly lit LED street light. I am now able to gain some level of dark adaptation. Of course, I didn't argue for practicing astronomy, but for better sleep which was also a problem because of this new LED street light.

    Under $500, I suggest the Sky-Watcher 150p Virtuoso. A 6in Collapsible TableTop Dob with GoTo Tracking. Weak spot is the loose helical focuser, but there are ways to improve. On the "Dobsonian Power" YT channel, he uses this scope with an astro cam to do EAA (electronically assisted astronomy).

    Great podcast! Going by my personal experience, don't buy a fast newtonian from GSO. The mirror was really good but the secondary kept going out of collimation over the course of the night, and the focuser had slop. Buy an 80mm ED refractor (skywatcher, orion, williams optics, etc.) and make your life easier :) OH and if you really like visual astronomy and have access to dark skies get a big dob, skywatcher synscan 12 inch is the best one in my opinion

    Thanks for this review! I've been wondering about this book and this helps. The "not laying flat" is indeed a bit of a bummer but overall, it's looking good for my use case. (Visual observing + Dobsonian and 'thrill of the hunt' + wanting to see things outside of the tried and true.)

    How about Rock Hudson?

    • @pjedicke
      @pjedicke 9 месяцев назад

      Rock Hudson was his stage name, of course, so the cuteness of naming an asteroid RockHudson is kind of watered down. That being said, there are many examples of celebrities who have asteroid names, so there's nothing against RockHudson in principle.

    BTW I'm from sydney, aus but I grew up in northern hemisphere and migrated here as an adult so I know the situation when you look up at a clear night sky for the first time and go......wait where is everything?? Luckily it was summer for us at that time and I could situate myself with Orion In winter the milky way core rises to zenith! and in summer we can see our weird galactic companions LMC and SMC. You guys can keep your Andromeda galaxy 😀

    Great cast! I have a Skywatcher 102/1000 the cheap achromat, but I think it was great for the price. I did need to upgrade the diagonal and ofcourse the eyepieces and I found the hard way that the focuser had some slop in it. But on the whole for a beginner amateur it's great. I'm thinking of getting a bigger and faster achromat like a 120/600 and trying out an aperture mask (stop it down) to see if that helps with chromatic aberration.

  • @leonidcechmistro7351
    @leonidcechmistro7351 Год назад

    Thank you! Now this was very refreshing and very helpful for those of us who have achromats! I have found that upgrading diagonals and eyepieces really help!

    If the magnification is too low, the exit pupil of the telescope can exceed the entrance pupil of the eye, so you are throwing away light, reducing the effective aperture of the telescope. This happens when the eyepiece focal length in mm is 5 times the telescope f/ratio.

  • @DavidMFChapman
    @DavidMFChapman Год назад

    One problem with the highest usable magnification formula (twice the aperture in mm) is that gives an exit pupil of only 0.5 mm. This is not a problem with young healthy eyes, but as one ages the incidence of “floaters” increases and interferes with the view. For an old feller like me, half that magnification works better.

  • @TJSpartan008
    @TJSpartan008 Год назад

    This will probably be a little over the $200 budget, but I like the Apertura SWA series of eyepieces with 70 degree apparent fov. They come in focal lengths of 10, 15, 20mm in 1.25 inch, and 26, 32, and 38mm in 2 inch, and range from about $70 to $120 USD apiece. I have the 26mm and 38mm for my Orion XT8 dob and am extremely pleased with the images through them.

    • @Nanu.Padilla
      @Nanu.Padilla Год назад

      Same here. I have the same series by Agena (I'm only missing the 32 mm EP from the series) and the views are amazing. I'm very pleased with them. The ones I used the most are the 38 mm and the 26 mm. 8" and 10" dobsonians. Clear skies!

    You guys are amazing! Loved this podcast as it answered a lot of questions, and gave me the ability to help my friend out who is looking for an eyepiece set! It’s not easy to start out, and had i had these suggestions I would have probably followed them, especially Shane’s 32mm + 2x Barlow. When I started out I only had 11/4 inch capacity: 32mm Celestron 24mm Panoptic 15mm 70 degree Antares 10mm Celestron 60 degree flat field! From the original set which took 11/2 years to put together, I have kept only the 24mm Panoptic. Thank you very much for this podcast!

    It was great to see the pictures of your gear while you were discussing it. It was interesting to see that you had the centre column up so far, even with a 4 inch refractor and a monster eyepiece. Was it stable enough like this? Also, it’s great to finally put some faces to the voices after so many episodes and emails.
