Indeed incredible what a skill and passion wonderful performance !👏👏👏👏
Awesome!
Wonderful to hear Medtner being played. Thank goodness the Russians are keeping him alive. It's beyond me why it just doesn't catch on elsewhere.
I believe he’s perhaps more popular now than he’s ever been since he was in his early days still in Russia, but that isn’t really saying much, as he was never a superstar. He found a home and haven (to a certain extent) in England. His music was always better received here than in Paris, and his teaching of his British pupils - like Edna Iles - is still passed down through the new generations here. Helped by great interpreters like Hamish Milne, and Benjamin Grosvenor (though I wish he would perform more Medtner!). I feel as though he’s been having a slow-burn ‘moment’ since the 90’s, with the Tozer and Hamelin recordings. I thought he was going to tip more into the mainstream when Kissin toured and recorded Sonata Reminiscenza. Then there was definitely a lot of interest when Debargue gave that fantastic performance of the first sonata in competition. I was hoping Debargue would continue to champion Medtner. These sonatas are very difficult to “tell”, the storytelling is dense and often evasive. They need powerful communicators to really shine. I keep waiting for someone like Chochieva to record an album of Medtner sonatas as good as her Rachmaninoff ones. That being said, I absolutely love the Night-wind performance on this video - so imaginative, much more playful than Medtner is often performed. Great pacing, huge variety, very atmospheric. With performers like these Medtner will always remain alive, even if interest in him waxes and wanes.
No comments in 5 years! - I don't get it! - Medtner's music's fantastic - why will it just not catch on?! Horowitz used to give all-Medtner concerts in Russia - if it's good enough for him then it should be for us! 🎼🎵🎶
Bravissimo excellent sound and interpretation, do you have the scores of this in pdf format? If you have them, could you send them to me? please (via email)
Thank you for posting. So unknown in the West Nikolai Medler's beautiful music. I only know one sonata played by the great Alexander Malofeev. (The Netherlands-eu)
Please do seek out EMIL GILELS' recording of the 5th sonata in G minor - it is excellent.

@@korolmuz Thank.
This is an incredible, transcendental performance full of passion, fire and heart. An awesome achievement, Brava, Brava...
Amazing!!!
Who the bloody fuck downvoted this?! An absolutely incredible and breathtaking performance of one of the most difficult and complex piano sonatas ever written! I'm actually in complete awe of this performance from Ms. Parakhina, virtually no technical mistakes even compared to a well-known virtuoso like Berezovsky, and performance-wise she completely pours her heart and soul into the sound world of Medtner's creation. Just wow
Spectacular. The contrapuntal awareness is out of this world.
Dina Parakhina is the best pianist and teacher in the world.
Many thanks for uploading these pieces, which are too little performed in Western Europe. Nice performances. It's a pity that the Steinway sounds rather harsh-is it the recording, or is the instrument maybe used otherwise in concertos to compete with large orchestras? Regarding the highly lyrical Op 11 no 1 in A flat-this sonata is technically much more hazardous than it appears at first sight. It's a pity that the soloist, although providing a sensitive interpretation, seemed to underestimate the difficulty of some passages at speed, resulting in many quite audible wrong notes. For example on the penultimate page where there are jumping octaves in the RH and fast triplet thirds and seconds in the LH. Also, in the last two bars of the Simrock edition, the high A flat chord is fff but the final cadence shows a diminuendo. Try it, it is quite effective. Please continue to study this excellent piece!
"what are u wailing about, NIGHTWIND, wht are u bemoaning With such fury" ? perhaps MEDTNERS "best" sonata, EPIC AND MONUMENTAL, A MOST DEMANDING PIECE TO PLAY, AND FOR THE LISTENER TOO, CANNOT REALLY EMPHASIZE HOW DIFFICULT THIS IS....BOTH MUSICALLY AND TECHNICALLY....CUDOS TO PR.DIANA FOR TAKING ON THIS BEHEMOTH PIANO WORK....
Oh my god! Dina Parakhina is incredible! All of these pianists were amazing, but her rendition is absolutely stunning!
yes ! absolutey incredible !
Deserves the accolade. This is a hard work to pull off. she does as well as anybody, and keeps the interest.
Please so seek out Medtner's G min sonata as recorded by Emil Gilels.
I'm currently trying to find the sheet music for the entire opera. If anyone could link me the manuscript or published urtext, that would be great thanks
Jonatan, you can ask the conductor of this performance - Mrs. Maria Maximchuk: maria.maksimchuk.ru/
Thank you posting this wonderful Medtner event! these are such great sonatas. Do you know whether these concerts are going to be issued onto CD? The Moscow State Conservatoire label issued the complete Medtner sonatas back in 2009 which were also recorded live in the Rachmaninov Hall, but these performances are far superior and the piano is of a much better quality too, here's hoping!
Hi, I just figured out that they're RCM students (London), class of Prof. Dina Parakhina, not Moscow Conservatory students.
Sehr beeindrückend in jeder Hinsicht! (Vor allem um 28:51!) Danke für dieses leidenschaftliches Vortspiel :)
