How I Select the Best San Pedro Cactus Seedlings
Просмотров 9 тыс.Год назад
How I select Seedlings of San Pedro Cactus. The basic plan is to grow cactus seedlings out in the most uniform condtions I can (still working on it) so that when I make initial selections, I am more likely to be picking them for genetic differences vs environmental conditions. I want them to express thier genetic potential. Once they are of a certain size, usually over 1 inch, they start to sho...

Tobacco on Cactus: San Pedro Meally Bug Annihilation Campaign

I've treated meally bugs on san pedro cactus successfully in the past using tobacco. This time I'm attempting to completely eradicate an infestation using a three pronged approach, fumigation, spraying and watering with tobacco tea. Smokin' Cactus, Fumigating the Greenhouse w/ Tobacco
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.2 года назад
An old school method of fumigating greenhouses using tobacco smoke. Nicotine is a potent insecticide. People used to fumigate greenhouses with tobacco leaf and stems. Tobacco tea insecticide spray and washes can be made by steeping leaves. Add a teaspoon of soap to the tea to help it adhere to plants and spray on. Tobacco water and dust have also been used as an insecticide to apply externally,...
I’ve noticed more unique gene expressions when I hard/rough grow them vs creating immaculate perfectly balanced cacti like you have. Something to experiment with perhaps if you haven’t already. If you ever want to swap some cuttings I’d be interested.
Do you mean when initially growing out seedlings?
As in allowing them to express those traits permanently v.s. just temporarily I mean
@@SkillCult From seed. Overcrowding, uneven light, no root trim, underfed. The character develops and if I take the top cut from the choice cactus the trait continues. If I take a pup and treat it like gold it will become more homogenized and less expressive. But I was surprised by the character stress could bring out. It’s slow and stupid but if you’re like me a cool looking cactus is worth the time. Probably cuts growing speed by 85 percent or so. Arduous torturous slow growth, etoliation can get bad obviously but that’s just where I make the cut. I make sure they are healthy though just far from ideal conditions for fast perfect growth. You definitely have more genetics to play around with than I do.
What kind of lighting situation would you recommend for winter dormancy? I want to encourage fatter cacti that flower.
I just leave them where they are. I dont' use any kind of artifical light. I wish I knew how to get cactus to flower sooner. I've heard to leave them in small pots, which i have kind of observed to maybe work. graft to already flowering stock and shift fertilization toward phosphorous.
I have planted the chip style pieces with my bridges and they have pups, took a piece of Mid and it can be cut into 4 + pieces depending on size you could get more.
Very interesting !!!
Don't waste your time with cinnamon your much better off using nothing and a fan than cinnamon and Sulphur is cheaper than the fake supermarket cinnamon and proven to work well and never mind the cost of real ceylon cinnamon with no fillers.
Is it not possible to modify an apple splitter for the same purpose?
not sure that would really work. it would have to have the right number of blades and they have a coring circle in the middle. I kind of want the cor in thre. It might look something like that though. I think it might be more like knives coming to the same point in the center and just stoppping, rather than all being welded together. Or maybe a single knife with a depth guide set to the center of the cactus that guides it exactly down the groove. I havne't actually thought about it a lot, but there is something that could be made which would be better than just a plain knife.if one were doing it over and over again.
interesting project man! i feel like i remember people applying gibberellic acid to areoles and getting good results on a forum, may be remembering the hormone wrong. possibly just cutting notches above the areole you want to force will increase your chances also after topping. my accidental experiment was i went too hard on a flowering fert high in P-K and basal pups were out of control haha
Sounds like BAP-6... you only apply a tiny amount usually dissolved in warm vaseline to dilute and handle. Only apply to a few areole if too many are induced to pup it'll just stall the growth for a long time. Coconut water it a great natural one for growth and pup and also pee-pee tek is gaining popularity.
One of the next things I want to do is cutting along the column somehow. I've seen cactus pup out after heavy slug damage mid column, so there is something there. I've also used notching on fruit tree buds a lot. I've actually got a system of fruit tree training I promote that uses notching very effectively. I've done some shallow cuts here and there. but the next video might be along those lines. Like taking these standing ribs and making a cut between each aereol, or making a significant cut every three aereols or something like that. I've got some other ideas too. Interesting on the fertilizer. I would have thought more nitrogen would be the thing, or maybe strong in N and K. I know we can hack this (maybe literally lol), somehow to get extremely large numbers quickly without having a crap ton of grafting stock., Another one I might try is taking the ribs, cutting between every aereol pretty deeply and then planting long sections of rib. So many fun experiments to try! thanks for the comment, cool stuff. I think Fertilizer may end up being key.
Interesting video, thanks for sharing Steven.
I pot my cuts the very next day and I have success. Root them in dry river sand I have roots in 3 weeks
Are you using a heat mat?
I'll try it. I usually heal for 4 weeks, then stick and start watering right away. I've not seen cuttings root fast very often without some water, but I never tried sticking them fresh or using sand. It makes sense if they are inclined to root in the medium, 3 weeks seems about right.
@@TeamWachumaI take and put a little soil in a pot and then use perlite or pumice to secure the plant on top of the soil and 3 weeks usually works
I agree, using non organic mediums is key, even silica gel pearls makes an excellent rooting and even germination medium for succulents! I prefer pure sand though, as it is fantastic to add to my other soils, unlike the silica, perlite, and other things, sand is the best hands down
Cool love seeing different experiments. I have done a few but only had young seedlings so was limited in results. Look forward to updates :)
Instead of using sulphur try cinnamon power…I use that on my cactus cuts and it’s organic
thanks. I keep forgetting to try that.
Question, why do you use sulfur over cinnamon?
I am interested in a starter pack
Oh, sorry, i thought you were talking about seedlings. I may actually have cuttings listed soon, including some scrappy collections of stuff...
How do I order from you were is your sight located
Ripping the roots is fine. Cacti benefit from root pruning during transplants.
looks like the cactus spikes have worked hard on the back of your hands! always wear gloves.
not really. they are just trashed from years of sun . And freckly because I'm part ginger.
Love it, my seedlings are doing great, really excited for the ss02xrs0004 to bulk up, thank you! What’s the blue one you said was gorgeous at 6:42?
My new babies are tucked away. Thanks again for your foster care. 😂
Where do you get your seeds from? I feel like half the seeds I order online are fake or BS.
A lot are from Misplant, who I receommend. I think he is very legit. A friend gives me a lot of seed, then a few other random sources. Misplant has a lot of variety and always new stuff every year.
Go team wachuma!!🎉🎉🎉 This is a solid dude guys keep cactusing guys!
Got my order in5 days days next growing season gonna order more mine about to go into dormancy had a ? About ur shulgin juuls cross whats it crossed w a pachanoi?
If you look/pause at about 00:03:39 then look at the 2 containers closest to you on the left(the spiney ones with the empty ziploc and those one your gloved hand is over), I would like to know those names to associate with them.
I'm not sure I'll be able to track those down since I've consolidated the flats and moved stuff around. the ones actually under the bag are probably drg x olivia or mb scop x olivia, but they are not spiney. the spiny ones in that flat are likely some sso2 cross.
@@SkillCult Thanks !!!!
Do you use foliar sprays for growth regulation too??
No. It seems like they would not be very good candidates for foliar feeding, because they are so stingy about keeping in moisture. I think foliar sprays work primarily through stomata. I haven't researched it though, maybe cactus have them too, or the stuff could get through anyway. I don't feel like researching it and it doesn't seem like a very good gamble, so I just don't do it.
@@SkillCult In fact foliar applications for cacti are EXTREMELY beneficial. However, they use C.A.M. unlike typical stomata and only open when it is night cycle. Most open in the middle of the night. Therefore, spraying at the wee hours with something like kelp, hormones, garden phos., etc. is EXTREMELY beneficial! I have had incredible success with this method especially during dormancy months.
@@trubizDD54 Great. I'm not sure where I would use that much. I seem to do great with liquid ferts. maybe bringing back a really malnourished cactus. I do spray my seedlings overhead with liquid fert, so maybe they are benefiting. good to know either way.
@@SkillCult Only if you are spraying them at night... During the day the CAM is closed tight!
What and where did you find your flats?? Has holes??
I use clear acrylic food servide tubs. You buy clear flat lids for them. I drill holes in the corners and a couple along the outside edge of each long side. I like them, but they are not necessary, especially if you had something like 10 or fewer flats. most people can easily get away with 10/20 flats, just buy the rigid ones. You can get clear domes for them. they are a lot cheaper. for larger numbers of flats, it becomes convenient to stack them on top of each other to transport and for long term growth, they tubs are deeper.
@@TeamWachuma I sincerely appreciate the response!!

Received my Order and was very Pleased! Soldiers have been Planted! Thank You!
Received my first shipment from you sometime last week. No problems whatsoever and they look so vibrant!
Ooh I wonder if my order is in that stack of papers!
those went out a while ago. IF it is a new order, I'll fill within the next couple of days.
What is the variety of mescaline content in these? Are any of them bred for potency or is this mainly for the looks?
The ones I ordered last year grew super fast once they were planted. Your system definitely works. Thanks!
Enjoying the new videos
I'll try to keep them coming. working on a couple more now.
I’ll keep my eye out
Had the same issue after a hurricane whole yard of.cactus had the spots once i moved plants to a drier location they stopped the black spots and some corked some rotted and had to be cut out Too much water too much humidity and you may want to male your soil even more inorganic material and of course very easy draining . For me in the south gulf of mexico - 50%perlite/25% very course sand or pea gravel/ 25% high quality soil. I also add meduim lava rock to the bittom of the pot before adding soil mix to aid in airation and drainage in addition to adding more holes for water and moisture to evap or leak out. All my new growth is spot free. Worse case scenarioun un pot and let the plant roots dry out and then repot without watering for a while.
Thanks for the update Steve. Your plants are loving life in Lakeport.
I dont think the edema is viral , i gave it to all my cacti on accident there was a homemade spray I was using for spider mites and I have been using the spray for a couple weeks on all sorts of plants including my cacti. But also more sensitive plants but what day i watered , sprayed that night and i forgot to turn on my fans and all my cacti got those giant swollen black spots that turned brown and corky after a while i think i blocked the pores with the spray and between watering , the high humidity and spray, cells burst from not being able to let water out
thanks someone else said something similar. I have thought before that it may have something to do with water or fertilizing excessively.
@@SkillCult I also had been fertilizing a few and my biggest got uppotted a few days before but the common factors between all of them were being watered being sprayed and high humidity with no air flow for the night it happened, the spray had never bothered them before it was just Castile soap with a Little isopropyl and a little hydrogen peroxide
That black rot is all edema or something like that
some of mine had similar black spots and my friend said it was from getting to much water but idk
I like this… Good stuff! Subscribed!
Bro please sell to Canadian shits so annoying trying to buy san pedro only fir it to say (usa only smh)
I’m using 70% alcohol wipes to rub them off
I like spikey bois
Great collection 😎👍🌵 The worst part of having a cactus fall over, is catching it. For me the spines are the coolest part. Lumberjack would be an awesome addition to my garden.
I might have some cuts of spikey stuff vailable soon, including LJ. Or if you live in norcal, I'd like to sell some plants.
Id love some Pala and oceanside!
Have you shared anywhere your substrate mix? It looks beautiful
Nin detail, but it is basically standard potting mix, preferably coco based, with an equal amount of charcoal. I do add other stuff when I have it. coffee grounds, wood ashes, shrimp, fish, or crab meal etc. the charcoal can suck up a lot of nturients in the beginnning, so either charge it up with nutes or use extra fertilizers for the first month or two. the charcoal is a big investment, but they seem to thrive in it and it lasts forever, just like an aggregate. I might talk about it a little here ruclips.net/video/OgSRBl1xJD4/видео.htmlsi=rAbd_HGj5ASaJoQ6 I'll make a video about it and the rationale sometime.
Very cool. Thank you. And may I ask, what size square containers are you using @20:43
@@1neAdam12 the bigger ones are anderson 5x5x8 tree bands. they have no bottom really, but you can put in a piece of netting or sometning, that's what I do.
Do you have a website or a way to purchase something from you
www.teamwachuma.com
I have a san pedro cutting i planted in small decorative ceramic pot for my patio after it slowed down growth from being root bound i pulled it. Out and trimmed the roots just like bonsai growers do now its growing happy again
Lots of stores throw away little plastic trays that are used for delivering soda i believe, i put my square pots in them so they dont tip and so i can carry more than one at once
that is what I prefer too. I have a collection of miscelaneous trays something like that, but I could use a lot more. I"ll see what I can scrounge up. It is much easier.
@@TeamWachuma I got all mine from behind gas stations and Dollar stores and stuff there black Pepsi trays with handles works great
Hey dude I know you're probably crazy busy but if you could make a family tree diagram for some of these crosses I'd really appreciate it I find it fascinating but I get all mixed up
When I start selling cuts of seedlings, I'll write something up about parentage. Otherwise, that probably won't happen lol.
Nice touch with the smoke!
These are awesome
