    Bob Doto teaches this numbering system in his new book. Both are good, but I tend to favour simpler systems. I wish I had started with something simpler like that; I overcomplicated my system, and sometimes, inserting new cards is a pain. I'm trying to simplify when writing new cards.

    • @KathleenSpracklen
      @KathleenSpracklen 15 часов назад

      Hi Douglas! It's good to know that others are spreading the message. The beauty of effortless numbering is that you can start to use it right where you are now. 1) The new card chooses it's parent and gets the next available extension of the parent's card number. 2) Create a directory card whenever the parent card has more than one child. The second phase is the part I will review again tonight: 3) Every card must have a piece of YOU, your thought, your idea, your reaction. 4) Create a tagline at the top of the card that is NOT a title (titles are dead and fruitless), create a single line that will recall to memory the entire card you created. 5) Make an index entry for every keyword in your tagline and every such entry must contain the entire tagline. At first, those rare long index entries will seem like a needless burden, but if you concentrate on bringing back to mind the whole card each time you write a new entry, you will have that idea circulating in your subconscious mind. Start creating more of those and your creativity will skyrocket.

    Hi Kathleen. Wondering May I ask what the meaning is of the corners cut of cards?

    • @KathleenSpracklen
      @KathleenSpracklen 2 дня назад

      Thank you for your question, Martin. When a Main Card or a Bib Card requires more space than one 4x6 file card, I cut off the corner of the second and subsequent file cards. This practice makes it very easy for me to a) see that the card extends to more than one file card and b) easily grab all related cards in one pull. Does this answer your question?

      I have amassed a lot of information in Obsidian but feel that the digital medium takes something away from Luhmann’s system. I don’t think I am making progress, and I have wanted to revert to an analogue system but have been a little worried about wasting effort. Your videos are extremely helpful in showing a way, and focussing on the non-obvious attributes. There is a concept of the extended mind, which postulates that we incorporate the physical realm more than we appreciate. I am of your generation, and am more comfortable with books and pens. So, long answer, but yes I am trying to apply the logic of the zettelkasten, but the digital aspect isn’t working for me.

    Thank you for the shout out. :) I don't order any of my bib cards by the source type. I still have them organized by the author names. Since everything had "r." first anyway and was ordered by author, I just keep it that way. I basically ignore the source type until I want to go back to the original source. As of now, I only have a few source types. "r." is on my original cards, "b." for books on my shelves, "z." for references I keep in Zotero for my PhD research (some of those are also books, but I keep the bibliographic info for citing in my papers). I have also started marking some with an "f" for printed papers I have in a filing cabinet. There are only a couple of these, since most everything is digital now. I'll probably stick with "r" for any books I don't have on hand (i.e. library books). My zettelkasten is not very large yet, so most of my references are in books, followed by Zotero. I'm looking forward to seeing what other people come up with.

    Hi! It's me again 😊 I'm just firing questions as I think of them. What is the reason for having a Letter card in the index for multiple key words and then eventually graduating to individual cards for those key words when they, as Scott puts it, earn their place... Why not have an individual card for every key word from the beginning in alphabetical order? Is this simply a material and space saving thing? If I'm not worried about material and space saving of the index can I simply have one card per key word? Is there another reason I'm missing? Thanks in advance ☺️

    • @KathleenSpracklen
      @KathleenSpracklen 7 дней назад

      Yes, you may have one card for every word. If that works best for you, there is nothing wrong with that. Let me give you a little idea of why I do it, besides that fact that I learn it from Scott. Take the letter "L", it's an average size letter of the alphabet for index entries. I have 18 cards containing words that have "earned their place" and I have 40 entries under "L". So it would greatly expand my index. That said, I'm tempted to go your way when I have to sift through cards L(1) through L(5) to see if there are any entries for the word "lead". So, take your choice, each comes with trade-offs.

  • @drew.alexander
    @drew.alexander 8 дней назад

    Why do you choose to add a directory card behind the main subject card, rather than just write directly on the main subject card?

    • @KathleenSpracklen
      @KathleenSpracklen 8 дней назад

      Thank you for your question, Drew. I add a directory card behind the main subject card for two reasons. The first is simply the space limitations on the main card. By the time I record what I learned from my source, add my reaction, and create a tagline to serve as a memory prompt for the card as a whole, I usually have the main card pretty full. The second reason is so that the directory card will stand out (that's why I use a colored card.) I know that I have at least two cards that would like to come right after the main card. The directory card lets these thoughts all be together on one card. I have some directory cards that have six or eight entries, so that's another space limitation problem. Does this answer your question? Is there more you would like me to say on this? Thanks again for your question.

    • @drew.alexander
      @drew.alexander 8 дней назад

      @KathleenSpracklen this makes sense and is helpful... thank you. ❤️ I do have one more question... in one of your videos you talked about placing a card behind a card to reference another card that's in a different spot (in case the card filed in the other spot wanted to be in two places). Why not simply add a note with the file number at the bottom of the card to reference the other card? Why use a second card to do this? This created some confusion for me as I'm now wondering if you always use a second card to link cards together... can you clear this up?

    • @KathleenSpracklen
      @KathleenSpracklen 8 дней назад

      @@drew.alexander Yes, let me give it a try. When two cards are next to one another in your Zettelkasten, it is easy for them to form a conversation. You are seeing the contents of both side-by-side. But you can't see the card that wanted to be in another spot. The Directory Card fills that gap. At least the Tag Lines of the two cards will be side-by-side on the Directory Card. It's the next best thing to seeing both cards at the same time. The more common use for a Directory Card is when two cards both have this card as their parent. Only one can be right after this card. The other is further away. In this case, too the Directory Card provides the next best thing to seeing all three cards at the same time. Did that answer your question?

    Kathleen, Something ive been thinking about that expands on your sequencing easy numbering system... The first number can be a single digit never going above 9. You assume that 9 is in the 1000ths place or however high to infinity. When you go to put a number between 5a and 6a (for example), the number between these could be 51 or 57 (which is actually 5100 or 5700). The only draw back to this is that if you want to place a card before 1, you'd have to represent your number with a decimal. .9 or .5 for example, because even though 1 represents 1000... if you put 999 before it that could be confused with 9990 since you are already dropping all the zeros. ... Since i like the idea of placing similar ideas close to each other i like Scotts method because it leaves room for the system to grow inwardly. However, it is possible to just drop the zeros as long as you are aware of this and are willing to use decimals when placing cards at the beginning. Even with Scotts method, he'd still need to use decimals if he ever grew to a point that he needed to place a card before 0001. Drew

      That's part of the beauty of the Zettelkasten. It is infinitely customizable. It sounds like you are coming up with a pretty darn good plan for organizing yours. And you can start with whatever categories you choose and then use effortless numbering for everything that comes after the category.

    Another note - Something I've started doing is using different letters in the front of my bib card numbering. I figured if everything started with "r." then that is a slot that could be used to encode something in my system. I now use it to encode what media the reference came from/where I can go back to the original source. "b." for a physical book on my shelves, "z." for Zotero, etc. I like to keep things as analog as possible, but I do use Zotero for my Ph.D. research since I'll need to retrieve all of the reference data digitally for publication anyhow.

    Thank you for this video. I also take lots of notes on my bib cards and have the same philosophy as you. If there are longer passages or things like lists that I want to have quick reference back to, I'll make a line in the margin, note the page number on the bib card, then add a short note. Otherwise, I take deeper notes on the bib cards. A given book (if it's good and full of info) can generate half a dozen or more bib cards. I also write on the front of cards 2+ so I don't waste any space.

      Numbers only have 1-9. Letters have A-Z. So there are only 9 numbers (10, if you include zero). Very limited? No. If we're up to 9 and want one more we go to 10 and take up two spaces. In the same way if we're up to Z and we want one more we go to AA and take up two spaces. So a card that is 10AA3B-7 is still number~letter~number~letter Dash number. Are you Drew Alexander the blacksmith? Very cool. (Well actually, very warm.) Do you keep a Zettelkasten?

      @@KathleenSpracklen yes I am :) Thanks for asking 😊 I'm just starting my ZK. I love to write and currently have two books in process. 1. A sales book for crafts people. 2. A personal memoir focused on craft. ... I also do a good bit of Bible study. I'm really exited about using this system to help me develop and keep track of my ideas. Thank you for clearing up this question for me. I have one more question. Do you think I'd do well to use 4x6 rather than 3x5 cards? Currently I'm using 3x5 cards. I've found that most of my ideas can be expressed on one card, especially if I use the back. If needed I can always double up the cards. One advantage is that they take up less space and will consequently not be as heavy should I ever need to move them. (Just sharing my rational.) Maybe you have a video on this? I'm still watching yours.

    • @KathleenSpracklen
      @KathleenSpracklen 9 дней назад

      @@drew.alexander If you prefer 3x5 that's fine. The most important thing is that the cards contain your thoughts and ideas, which comes through clearly when you say "most of my ideas can be expressed on one card." Now when you find a captivating Bible verse that you want to add to your Zettelkasten be sure to also include the prayer that rose up inside of you in response. Every card should contain something of you. I emphasize 4x6 because so many are tracking information that they have learned from a book. A 3x5 card will be full by the time they have captured the author's thought and I want them to also include their thought. Does this answer your question? If not, let me know and I will try again. How fun to think of you watching the videos I create. It makes the world seem smaller and more personal.

    My dear Kathleen. I am having problems with writing down my bib cards . They end up too long, because I tend to copy more than I should. I find everything interesting or almost that. Could give an advice how to be more selective on what should go on the bib card. Thx

    • @KathleenSpracklen
      @KathleenSpracklen 14 дней назад

      I have your same problem with Bib Cards. I'm on Page 19 of a foundational book I'm reading, and I'm on Bib Card 13. Yipes! The book is 644 pages long, am I going to end up with 440 Bib Cards? I'm certain that I will take fewer Bib Notes as I get deeper in the book, but here in Chapter 1 the terms are being named and defined, and the book's guiding vision is being laid out. I use the philosophy, when in doubt, make a Bib Note. However, I become much more selective when it comes to choosing which Bib Notes deserve to go on Main Cards. This is where I get really selective. I have made 9 Main Cards from those 13 cards of Bib Notes. It has to be an idea that lights up my brain or it doesn't go on a Main Card. Bottom line: I have your same issue with long Bib Notes, but I don't think of it as a problem. It's self-limiting. The one to be careful with is the Main Card. It must have an idea from your source, and your response. And the idea must be worth mulling over in your mind. Let me know if I have missed the mark in answering your question.

    You certainly did answer my question! I agonize over everything, but my attempt is to use Frederick Copleston's History of Philosophy. I did TRY to find a foundational book, though I haven't read Sertillanges and only saw your video on foundational books on Monday. My interests are primarily in areas of theology, but my wife is super interested in philosophy, and I've met enough people who had... Unusual (for my circles) takes on philosophy that I wanted to survey the whole subject. After all, you can't truly reject ideas you couldn't present the defense of.

    • @KathleenSpracklen
      @KathleenSpracklen 14 дней назад

      You might consider Peter Kreeft, since he stands on the border of philosophy and theology. If you want to take it from a conceptual level there's Philosophy: What Every Catholic Should Know. If you want a historical approach his 5-volume Socrates' Children: An Introduction to Philosophy from the 100 Greatest Philosophers. I plan to use the single-volume concept-level book for my foundational book because the landscape of the ideas is what interests me. It's up next on my reading list.

    Scott’s numbering system is ridiculous. Thank you for pointing that out. Unfortunately I believe the length of yours is kind of over the hilltop. I believe there’s something severely wrong with a numbering system that has to go that deep. This could be part of an overthinking mind/process. Overworking the process unnecessarily. I know it’s my opinion, but I’ve been doing ZK for almost 30 years and I’ve never gone that deep. Never had to.

    • @KathleenSpracklen
      @KathleenSpracklen 15 дней назад

      Interesting. Do you find you have to do a lot of linking? It isn't the numbers that have to go that deep. It's the decisions on which card a new card wants to follow. In the example from Scott's book with Horses, Donkeys and Mules, a choice to make Mules an interesting animal and assign it /4 would tend toward a wider, shallower tree. It also has to do with the selection. Including loads of factoids will often lead to very long numbers.

      @ceafva 15 дней назад

      Maybe a better question is how to make this easier. When I learned his system in Germany when I was a teenager, his system wasn’t like this. I believe Americans are making this more difficult in order to increase sales. So I challenge you by asking the question, are you creating, a big library or is the end result to create content? Using a question thinking process can make this so much easier. Again, just my thoughts.

    • @ceafva
      @ceafva 15 дней назад

    • @KathleenSpracklen
      @KathleenSpracklen 15 дней назад

      @@ceafva That is exactly the question that I am trying to get new users to think about. Every card should represent a thought that is worthy of thinking plus one's own thought in response. Then when a new thought connects with an existing closely connected thought (or thoughts) you get an explosion of new idea by examining what makes the two thoughts alike, what are their differences, what brought about the differences, and so on. I want my viewers to think of their Zettelkasten as a way to expand the mind, not as a box of facts. A while ago you mentioned that you are starting your own channel. I'm looking forward to that. I hope you plan to discuss how Zettelkasten was taught to you as a teenager in Germany.
