I appreciate this Video as I also research the Mansur's as they are my great grand parents as well.. As much as I liked the video and my research coincides with their account, it is a very narrow perspective leaving out a lot of pertinent information. I would argue my research shows not only was their meeting up with Harrison Reed not happenstance or coincidental but planned. There are documented accounts of both Curtis and Harrison Reed having interactions with both Sewall Smith (Mary Mansur's brother) and Aaron Putnam ( Mary Mansur's brother in law) before George and Mary took their trip to Wisconsin. The reason the Mansur's left Vermont for Wisconsin, may have been in search of Farm Land, however they chose Eastern Wisconsin as the destination because they already had a substantial family presence in the Area. If it was not preplanned to go to the area that became Neenah, it would have made much more sense and been a much easier trip to stay in lake Michigan and come ashore in Milwaukee, where the family was already well established. Mary Mansur (smith) youngest sister Elvira Putnam (smith) and her husband Aaron Putnam we the first settlers of Big Bend, Wisc 6+ years before George and Mary's trip. George Mansur's sister Nancy Smith (Mansur) and Mary Mansur (Smith) brother Sewall Whitney Smith were married several years before George and Mary, And had settled as one of the first settlers in East Troy Wisc. where Sewall owned and operated the first general store and was post master and well established in East Troy before George and Mary left Vermont. Also another of Mary Mansur(Smiths) brothers Jesse Smith had a well established Cobblestone Inn down in Big Bend, Wisc As Historic as the Mansur family is to Wisconsin and the United States, the Smith's are actually even more so. Even the founding of Appleton has much to do with this family. A Cousin to the Smith's, Samuel Appleton's father Isaac Appleton actually Served under Mary Mansur (Smith) Grand Father Captain Abijah Smith in the Revolutionary war where the Appleton's and the Smith's were 2 of the largest landowners in New Ipswich NH. and they also have a strong connection with Amos Lawrence. This even extends to the founding of Lawrence KS, Amos Lawrence sent Col James Clinton Blood ( Married to George and Mary Mansur's daughter Eliza Blood ( Mansur)) as his agent, where he became first mayor of Lawrence KS, to the territory after Col James and his brother Col Henry Blood helped in setting up Lawrence University in Appleton. From the Mormon Founder Joseph Smith ( Marys cousin, who grew up with George and Mary lived in the same county in Vermont with till 8-9 years old when Joseph's family moved 17 miles away) to Marys Grand Father Lieutenant Levi Whitney (In 1775 Levy was at the battles of Cambridge and Bunker Hill ) who's cousin Ely Whitney sr lived less then 7 miles from when Ely Whitney jr (cotton gin) was born and Levi's great grandson Amos Whitney (Pratt and Whitney) the ties of this family are American History. There is so much more! Pulling back the perspective on this family shows a incredible picture.

I had no idea the house one of my childhood friends in the 90s lived in was the historic Christian Walter house. I've been in the house. I don't remember anyone in the Derouin family mentioning anything about the history of the house or brewery.
Great work and interesting history that I enjoyed learning as part of the Mansur Family. My father is Sidney Mansur, Jr. I think it is interesting that my mother Gail Traas Mansur grew up in Neenah and Appleton. She also was from a family of entrepreneurs, professionals and business people. Thank you again for making this RUclips presentation and to the Howdens for representing our family.
You may want to look into something called "the Welsh Knot" brought in by the English to try to eradicate the Welsh language. Wales is the poorest country in the UK, & is still treated as an English colony.
I'm watching this in my kitchen in Barry Vale Of Glamorgan, thank you so much for bringing my people to light.
Always fun to learn possible family history 😊 -Nathaniel Jesse Doty
THANX !!!!
Out of curiosity, were you able to farther back? My mom went a few Jourdain generations. (JJ - Alexis - Jean Baptiste Jr, Jean Baptiste Sr - Guillaume) but it was guesswork after Alexis
My interest has been the history side and have not focused genealogy. You added a nice piece that I did not have. Did your mom have any information on JJ's childhood in Canada?
@@tomvanlieshout858 Not as far as I know. I believe she did visit Trois-Rivières
@@brianmccarty3615 I have done some work with Green Bay and thy have a ton of info of Joseph's early years in GB. Below is some info, gives you a good idea on how he became involved in smithing! Hi Tom,.....It looks like Jourdains dad might have been born in Green Bay in 1748....his grandfather must have been a voyaguer or in the military....see below. THE CITY THAT JOSEPH WAS BORN IN The city was the second to be founded in New France (after Quebec City, before Montreal). Given its strategic location, it played an important role in the colony and in the fur trade with First Nations peoples. The settlement became the seat of a regional government in 1665. Ursuline nuns first arrived at the settlement in 1697, where they founded the first school and helped local missionaries to Christianize the local Aboriginals and developing class of Métis. French sovereignty in Trois-Rivières continued until 1760, when the city was captured as part of the British conquest of Canada during the Seven Years' War. Sixteen years later, on June 8, 1776, it was the theatre of the Battle of Trois-Rivières (part of the ill-fated invasion of the province of Quebec by les Bostonnais, Americans from the Boston area) during the American Revolutionary War. Trois-Rivières is Canada's oldest industrial city, with its first foundry established in 1738.[14] The forge produced iron and cast for 150 years, much of it being shipped to France to be used in French navy ships.[15] The first port facility was built in 1818 near rue Saint-Antoine, and today handles 2.5 million tonnes of cargo annually.[16] The first railway was built in 1879 to support the growing lumber industry.[17]
Well done, gentleman!
I am also a descendant via his daughter Margaret and her daughter Susan
Brian, thank you for sharing. It was a fun project to put together. I am from his youngest son Thomas line. 6 generations of Menasha residents

When was this?
This was not a program. This clip is for new signs being installed on Lakeshore Avenue in Neenah.
Amazing oracle of S A Cook and The Armory!
This was very interesting. I was very young so I only have vague memories of going there with my mother. Years later I wondered if I'd imagined the moat, armor etc.. but seems my memories were pretty accurate. She'd shop for clothes and ski suppies, I'd get candy and we'd eat at the cafe. Forty years later she still had hangers and other trinkets with knights trappings, ski inn and the looking glass logos.
Really appreciate these videos, thank you for preserving our local history.
Great job, Tom. Admire the amount of research you did, for this very interesting program.
Fascinating program. Loved every minute of it. I met George Banta Jr., when I was working at the Alumni Office at Lawrence University, freshly coming off the Immigration “boat” from the Netherlands in 1964, and had an interesting conversation with George Banta, Jr. a Lawrence University Trustee, He explained to me that his forefathers came from the Island of Banta in the Netherlands, [later renamed] and when they came to America they were registered with the last name of Banta. They just left it that way. Same thing happened to the Biltmores. Great job, Jane.

My mother Martha Sparks's experience looking for a teaching job in Neenah was the same. She moved in 1948, newly married with her bachelor's degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She always said that it was because women got pregnant and they didn't want a pregnant woman teaching. She did not get a teaching contract in Neenah until 1968.
Very interesting presentation. I remember many of these stores. I grew up on Oak St across from Lenz and Harders Groceries. I remember those penny candies. When my mother needed milk, bread...she would send one of us kids to Harders to get it. Pete kept separate pads for the neighboring families where he wrote down items they would buy. On pay day, mom would send one of us kids over to have Mr Harder add up our bill. He'd give us the total and we would go home and get the amount of money and then go back and pay our bill. My parents owend Kaczmareks Grocery at 138 Tyler St, Neenah from about Apr 1950 to Oct 1952. The family lived in an apartment above the store. My sister remembers mom calling down to dad "dinner is ready, bring up some milk".
Nice
