McKenzie was great. Juliet was okay. There's something unflattering about her arms. Almost too dramatic so that she looks like she's flailing around. I'm glad to have seen this performance. Never seen it before.

Love this. Saw it on PBS when it was shown live. Cannot find a DVD/Blue Ray and would love to have this.

I also saw this when it was first released on PBS and wish there was a DVD of it. Beautiful and heart rending performance.

Thank you for uploading this. I'd never seen this particular performance, but always heard about the sweatpants. Thank goodness they weren't red, but then someone would've noticed before he got on stage.

Many years ago, I had a VHS tape "The Magic of Kirov ballet". The drum dance was just sensational. I never forget it after 30 some years. I'm very happy to find out it's from this performance. Have a look around 1:01:15

The Duke of Courland and Friar Tuck? Seriously? Although I have to admit I always expect Friar Lawrence to break into "To Each His Dulcinea" from "Man of La Mancha! This just popped up in my queue and I was thrilled to see another ABT telecast from the period when I attended *extremely* regularly and knew all these names. Very sorry to hear about Renvall, really liked him. Can't wait to watch!

Just took a quick look at this because I've always liked Terekova and Komleva. The drama in the Nikiya/Gamzatti confrontation scene was wonderful. I liked the way Terekova goes from bribing to outright contempt to again bribing ("I don't understand what's wrong with you! *Everybody* loves money and jewelry") to just crumbling and begging Nikiya to give Solor up. She hits some very believable notes I haven't seen before in Gamzatti. Komleva, while a little overstated (consider the date) squeezes every last bit of drama out of "You don't understand. He swore over the sacred fire that he love ME, JUST ME. Got it?" Thanks for posting!

How does she do it? Makarova moves like the most finely spun gossamer, even in the pas de deux sections with Paris in the ballroom scene.

I was working as stage crew (taking care of the kids in the performance) when this was filmed (Summer 1988). Please notice at the 2:40:00 mark when Romeo (Kevin McKenzie) runs onstage, HE IS STILL WEARING HIS SWEAT PANTS! His dresser (who eventually got blamed for this "wardrobe malfunction"), forgot to have him take them off before this emotional last scene. Of course, it was being filmed and shown live on PBS that evening so everyone, including Mikhail Baryshnikov, who was at the time, Artistic Director, was going wild on the side of the stage. What was amazing about the whole event was that Kevin maintained his professionalism and danced as if he left his sweat pants were still in his dressing room! Magnificent performance, Kev! Bravo! :)

I've heard a similar story about I think George de la Pena and leg warmers, dancing Espada in Don Q. I understand about dressers and their unions but wasn't thinking in terms of them reminding dancers to get out of their sweats and leg warmers, just helping them change quickly backstage if they had a quick turnaround. Thanks for sharing!

I remember videotaping this live performance & gasped when I saw Kevin come out in the sweatpants - he had been interviewed backstage during the intermission. I still have the VHS tape which I’ve since transferred to DVD. I was in awe of his focus & ability to pull off a wonderfully dramatic performance like that, especially with such difficult partnering!!
