Laser Engraving A steel Rolling Mill Plate To Make A Sterling Silver Ring Band
Просмотров 4783 месяца назад
Rolling mils are a fairly common and very useful tool in the studio. I use it for making my sheet, wire and ring stock from raw metal. They are also used to apply patterns to metal for everything from backplates to bails. In this demonstration I use the xTool F1 Ultra laser to engrave a clean line Celtic knot work pattern into a flat piece of steel to use as a die to make a 3 D pattern in silve...

I combine traditional silversmithing and fabrication techniques with 21st century laser technology to craft unique custom pieces of artisan jewelry. Here I demonstrate how readily the xTool F1 Ultra laser can directly engrave deeply into sterling silver. By creating a small unique floral element it was possible to turn a simple ring band into a delicate floral ring, greatly enhancing its value....
Using The xTool F1 Ultra Laser In The Studio To Create Steel Shot Plates
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.3 месяца назад
As a jeweler I use hundreds of tools. A recent addition to the studio has been the xTool F1 Ultra laser. This is a dual laser (20 W blue and 20 W IR fiber) that is incredibly versatile and useful. In this tutorial I hope to illustrate one of the thousands of uses for it, in this case making steel shot plates. A shot plate is a small version of a die, used to form 3 dimensional pieces that can b...
Jack's Solid Silver Runny Babbit

I used my Potter USA tools to handcraft a steeling silver blank. Then I used an original image of a cute RunnyBabbit that I had drawn a few years ago (and made an enamel pendant with it). It needed to be converted to a greyscale depth map image so I could laser carve it directly into the silver. For that I am using the xTool F1 Ultra dual laser, for silver the IR fiber laser was used. Altoid-like Tin Mini Travel Pallette Or Trinket Box

The altoid tins remain a popular element to craft with. Brilliant little metal boxes that are a super convenient size for playing cards, money, sewing notions, etc. I wanted to emboss the designs I so love, mostly Art Nouveau style. I use one of these myself as a pallette for glass paints. Follow along as I create a small box design and the aluminum pallette insert.
Comparison of radioactivity in uranium glass and vintage red fiesta ware

Since radioactivity is all around us and constitutes a natural part of the environment, it is interesting to examine a few almost everyday objects. Also, uranium glass is a popular vintage substance that is used in glassware, jewelry and decorative items. It has a beautiful absinthe green glow under ultraviolet light. While the uranium glass is radioactive, it is instructive to develop a sense ...
Fabrication Of A Sterling Silver Match Safe Emulating A Vintage Design

This video is mostly narrated still shots of my process for fabricating a silver match safe. 100-150 years ago matches were precious commodities, not to mention a bit dangerous. Radioactivity of uranium glass jewelry????
Просмотров 776Год назад
Many us either collect uranium glass or use it to fashion jewelry items. Because the glass contains the metal uranium (in several forms of oxide) it is a natural reaction to wonder about the level of exposure. In this video I summarize and (over)simplify some of the aspects of ionizing radiation. Please note that I have left out much and only superficially mentioned some things. It is not inten...

Beautiful! Thank you for the tutorial!
👏👏👏
for etching...can ferric chloride be used or I noticed that sparex also seems to dull some enamels..
@@ruthpallek5202 I doubt it would cut glass. Copper yes, but not maybe useful for the enamel. But I honestly don’t know.
I have the same concentrator , thank you for sharing
An artist ❤
This is so exciting!! I got an xtool P2 recently. Maybe I can achieve something similar with it! I learned enameling and silver work through B Golden Jewelry School. I love expanding on my training and this video was so inspiring! Gorgeous piece 😊
Thank you. Your instructions answered many questions. Can I assume the engraving process removed about 0.5 millimeter thickness ? Would you be able to show/test the cutting capability of this showing the process time and different gauge metal?
@@angie_from_arizona thanks! At the moment using the emboss function can readily go 0.5 mm deep. But paradoxically cutting is harder to do currently. I did a video about cutting titanium. I am awaiting a wobble function in cut. The kerf is so tiny that most metals remelt and it can be hard to cut cleanly. But generally going faster with 8000 repeats is best.
Mr. Jellies, thank you so much for makings this videos, you are a light at the end of the tunnel.
i am wondering if we can do the same art on 999 Silver? If yes, What should be the guage? Is it possible to do it without burning the piece. Also when to stop. firing because that is critical part here. Your work is amazing.
The mechanical pentel pens have a sharpener i the back of the pencil. At least when i was in art school they had. Your drawing is incredible 😊 also the more BBs are on the pencil the more graphite...but the new pencils that are eco friendly are without graphite at least thats what they say. When you get to 7B the next one is charcoal
This is really informative, thanks! Would there be a benefit to creating a plate with multiple copies of the same pattern in order to mill more than one ring at a time, or would this be more difficult to roll? I was aiming to roll 0.5mm/24 gauge copper over a texture plate to create multiple strips for a large piece of art, would a plate like this still work well do you think?
@@final_animal thanks! Thin metal is tougher to roll and often needs a backing like paper or foam to push it into the design. That said, you can generally roll strips about 2-3 inches wide and 6-8 inches long on a filled out pattern plate. Making your own that large will be a challenge, doable but not easy. I would check out Potter USA they have a great selection of pattern plates full size.
THAT IS A COOL BENCH PIN!
I literally got a different brand of fiber laser to be able to make my own shot plates. So glad to have come across your tutorial! I've not seen anyone else make them with a laser. Thanks for sharing!

@@rachelbradshaw778 thank you so much!
Beautiful work as always Jack! I'm amazed that you can use the laser to score the metal. I was told that it couldn't be done.
@@KimberH1701 thank you! The fiber laser can do ok, about 0.25-0.5 mm
This is one of the reasons I actually purchased the ultra, when doing a search came across your video's. Greatly informative, thanks for sharing!
@@amburrosedesigns9752 thanks!
could you etch the silver instead of rolling it
@@blacksmith7996 sure. But this is a way to make a pattern plate. You could directly laser engrave or etch the silver, takes about 2 hours each one. After making a plate you can make an impression in about 2 minutes.
Very nice. May I ask what kind of steel the block is made of and is it hardened? Source?
@@marknelson7451 thanks. Mild steel, not hardened. Off cuts from eBay
Great video. Perfect selection of music (hope you feel better soon!). Thank you for sharing with us.
Jack, fantastic work! How deep do you think can this laser engrave? I currently cast pieces but sometimes, fine details are lost. A laser would probably come in handy.
@@Jalvi_au thanks. I can get 0.5 mm with the emboss function, maybe a bit more. The settings in the software still aren’t optimized for engrave and cut but pretty good.

Do you worry about loss of the silver from the laser?
@@bitwhiskers6969 thanks for asking. Not particularly. When I engrave by hand I rarely can recover much in the way of chips either. But, it does vaporize the metal and it will lighten it a bit. I may do a before and after weight comparison for interest. But for most of my designs, I sense the losses are close to being in the noise.. for deep designs or cutting the losses might be significant
I see how deep the engraving is. If you did try, do you think you could cut it out fully given enough passes? I have already seen your Titanium cut out video. Very informative. Would annealing the silver help? What about Argentium vs Fine silver? Do you think it would make a difference in engraving or cutting? I am also wondering about precious metal clays that have been dried enough to carve before firing.
@@hooksntoggles cutting is a bit different. Right now it is easier to get depth using the emboss function since it allows for an axis rotation after each pass. To cut effectively we really need to have a wobble in the laser path so that the kerf can be a little larger and eject metal. I’ve not found a difference between annealed and hard for silver. Can’t speak to Argentium since I don’t use it but it may do just fine. It has a harder time with fine silver though. It will work, but the addition of copper to alloy it makes it easier to laser engrave. Also don’t know about the unfixed but dried silver clay. But that might be an interesting application.
@@jackjellies9854 Thank you for answering my questions. I am but a novice. I only know enough to be dangerous with a torch.

Did you enamel the backs (counter enamel) of your cabochons? They fit pretty flat on the setting as if they have no enamel in the back. Good looking work. Thanks!
Yes, domed and counter enameled
@@jackjellies9854 thank you Jack. 👍🏼
everything is so exquisite.
Thank you.
Would it be easier to use a dap instead if a rod in the press?
You can dap or use a bender. The small press is ideal for this but they also make nylon bending pliers. I show what works if you have nothing else.
Good video! People need to educate themselves more.I see most people are afraid of the radioactive pendant although it has 500 counts per minute and potassium salts have almost the same reading..If this plate is safe than those pendats are safe also .
SO helpful! Thank you.
My pleasure! Hope you enjoy creating goodies.
Thank you I just spent hours piercing…and thought how do I put this together!!😂
Hi, thanks for this demonstration. I'm just getting into enamelling and I love the idea of being able to draw a design and then paint it, it brings together so many of the hobbies that I've played with over the last 73 years. Man I just love being creative. Kind regards . . . Andy
Thanks, Jack. I've been wanting to do this for a few years.
What a super video! So clear and so inspiring!
Thank you!
Is a glass etcher a necessary step? It’s very hard to find in my country (no idea why) but I have plenty of diamond coated files for enamel, would it be possible to achieve decent results, or do I have to go look for glass etchers online?
The chemical process is not necessary, but much more repeatable and easy. All you need is some amount of “tooth” on the glass. Sanding with diamond or silicon carbide should work fine IF you can get an even surface. I had some success also by painting the surface with a light coat of white watercolor. When it dries it will accept the graphite if you are careful.
You mention you should have domed and the flat blank only barely worked... Why? The problem?
This was heavy enough to handle the differential stress of expansion without cracking. Since the glass and metal have different coefficients of expansion it is safer to dome the metal so that as one side pulls the other side pushes and the forces equalize. This is what many enameled pieces are domed.
This is absolutely wonderful and inspiring! ❤
Thank you so much!
How does the counter enamel cope with multiple firings? Does it not destroy it?
It can be hard on it but typically if done well to begin with you can refire a few times.
Kiln firings can be a bit of a hassle, all our trivets have bits of glasses on them…
You're a great teacher enjoyed the video.
Thanks tons. Glad you enjoyed it
Very informative... and calming....
I tried this and used a 6B- my design almost went away after firing- maybe I over did it, not sure but I was really disappointed after all that work getting it ready.
Yes, it can be tricky. Overfiring is a very real issue.
