So so dope and still slept on. Bought this in the mid 80s it was one of the first funk records i Bought
Back in the seventies there was a plethora of music papers it was a great time for new bands and each week there would be different adverts for new albums. Prog rock was at its height and I was always looking for a new sound. Just like Spider and Rudi from the Mighty Boosh. Japanese cars where hammering British Leyland, Japanese motor bikes where taking over. So when I heard of the Sadistic Mika band I went out and bought Black Ship. They seemed to apply the same strategy to rock music, take a western product, fine tune it and hone it then make a technically perfect product. For it's time. To be honest I found it hit and miss but when they where on song, perfection. The extended pieces where dramatic moody and exciting. They still are. Over thirty years on in the age of the internet and mobile phone the world seems much smaller. Back then this band was really exotic. All of the tracks are played with expertise and precision. In my opinion Sumie no Kunie, time machine and black machine stand out. For these alone this CD is worth buying. Written in 2010
After working on Pink Floyd's masterpiece “Dark Side of the Moon” in 1973, Chris Thomas discovered the existence of “Sadistic MiKa Band,” who had just released their first album in the Japanese market at the time. He visited Japan and asked Toshiba EMI to produce the band's second album. The album “BLACK SHIP (Kuro fune)” (Released November 5, 1974), which contains this song, was completed with his participation as a producer. At the time, all the members were in their early 20s, and except for bandmaster Kazuhiko Kato, who was already a well-known musician in Japan, all the members were unknown at the time and were still a group of gemstone players. However, when one learns of the subsequent individual successes and achievements of each player in Japan after the band broke up, it becomes clear that the band members to be a group of very talented musicians. Still, it is amazing that Chris Thomas was able to discover their high potential by listening only to their first album, which was strongly pop-oriented and led by Kazuhiko Kato. However, their collaboration ended with only their second and third albums. The band barely managed to attract attention in the U.K. when they accompanied Roxy Music as their opening band for a month of live performances in the U.K. to promote the release of their new third album. But after that, they were not in the spotlight any more, neither in the U.K. nor in Japan. The reason for this is that upon their return from the UK tour, Mika Kato remained in the UK and the band abruptly disbanded. Kato and his wife divorced, and the band, without Mika, cancelled all their planned shows in Japan on their triumphant return tour from the UK and quietly disbanded without any media coverage. In fact, it seems that the band had already reached its limits by the time of the UK tour, but they managed to make it through the UK tour as planned. The reason for Mika's remaining in the UK is said to be her romantic relationship with Chris Thomas. In other words, he was the one who found a talented young Japanese band from the Far East, had them make an album with Pink Floyd's sound-making know-how, and then broke up the band too by falling in love with the frontman's wife. If the divorce had not happened and the band had continued their creative activities with their fourth and fifth albums, the name of Sadistic Mika Band might have become known not only in Japan but also in the world much earlier. However, it is an irony of fate that the breakup of the band freed each member from the band and they became successful individually in their own ways (only in Japan).

The strings are like thoughts running; memories, in the background of your mind...wide swaths of experiences, moments. While the guitar solo is like talking, speaking, as the thoughts in the backdrop of your mind silently guide that which is verbalized. 2:01.......... I do believe the solo guitarist was listening *intently* to the strings track when he laid his memorable fabulous lines. *2:12* ....... what mesmerizing breathtaking sounds mesh in such ultra unison.
cool
This track is incredible and the whole album is gold 💜
