Is it possible to be let onto the A level course despite not having studied Drama at GCSE? Or would other candidates who did so be more likely to be accepted?
It isn’t necessary to study GCSE Drama to do it at A level. More information at www.solihullsfc.ac.uk/course/drama-theatre/.

I have a question for you Paul...I've just finished my 2 years at solihull sixth and In all honesty feel as if this is a major step backwards for the college, several people I know benefited dramatically from two one year courses as it split the work load into two much more manageable sections. Not to mention the fact that if for some reason your A2 course cannot be completed (such as health of personal problems) then your AS results can be picked up in future, depending on exam boards and other variables. Whereas with one two year course, that opportunity is gone. Also in reference to the recent health and social care mishap (which negatively affected many personal friends of mine), if that was to occur again on a different course then the students in question would be in a much worse position as two years would have been wasted pm the wrong syllabus as opposed to one. My question for you Paul is why? Why would you decide to implement this considering the events of the last year? I feel it is completely unfair towards future students and in all honesty I feel as if you're attempting to separate the "wheat from the chaff" for want of a better term, if a student cannot you handle one two year course then you would rather they were not at your college. Admittedly this may not be the case but I would have thought out of respect for the students in your care, you would allow them the same opportunities as other colleges that are doing the respectable decision of continuing with two one year courses. Here's a suggestion...stop making these bogus, ridiculous rule changes in an attempt to gain media attention. If one two year course was a sensible and necessary option then it would come down to being made compulsory for all colleges. I would appreciate a reply as I would love to hear your reasoning for this decision to deprive your students of equal opportunities as other colleges.
Kierren Horne Hi Kierren, Paul is on leave at the moment. I am sure he will want to get in touch upon his return. However, in the meantime let me give you some background information. The changes to A level are being brought in nationwide by the government. It is a nationwide policy to stop AS levels counting towards A levels, not a decision by this College. Some Colleges are approaching these changes differently, but we have decided not to teach AS alongside the two-year A level as it is logistically very difficult to do. Historically the vast majority of our students have stayed with us for the full two years, rather than leaving after one year and so that is where we are focussing our attention. We have thought long and hard about how to best serve our students with these changes coming in and we think this is the best way forward for the reasons that Paul gives in his interview. We are offering students additional teaching hours within a new timetable, which will stop students having trapped "free" time in the middle of the day and give them more time with their teachers, so they are as prepared as they can be for their exams. I will pass your comments onto Paul and I'm sure he will be in touch with you himself in the coming weeks. Thanks for sharing your concerns.
