Very true, I own the FM 81 sawback version and the first one was sharpened so badly I had to return it (horribly uneven edge angles). The second was barely passable and I just sharpened it myself. I don't understand how they can't just sharpen the knife correctly like practically every other company is expected to. Also neither of them could even cut paper when fresh out of the packaging, what a joke. Their quality control seems to be non-existent. It is a good knife once it's worked on but the fact that a completely new knife has to be worked on just to be usable is a huge problem in itself. I certainly can't recommend it to anyone due to the amount of work that goes into making it usable unless I know they have the means and forewarning of what to expect.

They were discontinued 3 years ago. Remaining examples, world wide, will be NOS and probably black. I STRONGLY suggest you buy when you see, which will not be easy, but still possible. After 5 years they will be very rare, post that virtually impossible to find. And they will command higher prices than Gerber MkII, as they are moe legal in more countries, not to mention alot more versatile and 100 times stronger. I 'saw the writing on the wall' a year ago and brought 7. All FM78. All Black. All new. This is the best outdoor knife in the world if your priorities are strength, defense and practicality, that you will actually carry. This knife was based on an evolution of trench knives from WWI, WWII and earler. It was made for a successfully broad global military market; survived nearly half a century of service; is still going strong and imo will for decades more. I dont care what anyone says, I know this is the lightest and strongest knife there is. At a mere 200g it is a survival and fighting knife you can actually carry. Thats rare. Very rare. And unlike most being thin its designed to REALLY kill, get in between ribs. Its speed is also unmatched for the class - you dont need a trainer for Glock, you train with Glock! I told Eickhorn Soligen of Germany this, and they baulked, but hey it is what it is. The Germans are good, very, very, very good. But when the Austrians are good their perfect. Their KM2000 BS is TOO HEAVY. It isn't practical to carry and I also doubt its stronger than the Glock FM78, I wager not only in a direct comparision, but also in a (fair) power to weight ratio comparison (meaning if the BM2000 was the same size it would have no chance). The FM78's tip strength is the strongest I've seen, even when pitted against knives with thick tips, but whats sobering is the Glocks tip is THIN!? Glocks lateral strength is the strongest I've seen - bent 46 degrees and returning dead true. Again, it is stronger than the Fallkniven A1 in this comparison - a thicker wider knife costing 4 times as much as Glock and meant to be one of the worlds strongest production survival knives. I haven't seen anything do that, ever. But I heard rumours since the mid 1980's the Glock could do this. And the steel is not 1095, he's wrong. its SSiXXX or a specially treated version of Pigwell Austrian 80crv2, I don't know, as they keep it quiet. If anyone tells you they know, their lying. Unless you meet an Austrian. Austrians dont hype, they deliver. I have collected and used knives for 50 years. You WILL NOT find a stronger more dependable knife you can carry and Glock will out do most all you cant carry also, save the Bussee Battle Mistress or a Scrapyard Scraper, which are sharpened crow bars anyway, not knives. And FM78 came before the Glock 17 hand gun. To think FM78 came out in 1978 and is still stronger than even a Fallkniven A1 is incredible and proves manufacturers lie through their teeth about their knives. The only thing that changed with metalurgy since the 40's is blade smelting and grain refinement, not metallurgy composition. While mixing has improved things like corrosion resistance, toughness and edge retention for sure, it has NOT improved sheer strength. I put my Glock through a 1" thick brick layers pallet crate 8 times, comming out another 1cm and going into another pallet crate 0.5cm. If that had been a coyote, wild pig, buffalo or name your ser1al ki11er - end of! Bye... bye... You also have a curved tip and drop point for game dressing and the point is directly centre lined for bow drilling. Wow. No one even though tof that. The FM78 was genius Gaston Glocks' masterpiece. I heard of this knife 37 years ago in 1986, but we had no idea what it was called or where to get it and probably couldn't have where I live anyway. It would have hit U.S. and German surplus stores in 1987, but calling the U.S. in the 1980's was so expensive most have no idea. Today the equivelant of around $150 USD. Glock had one evolution in its time, thats how good it was. And I am not talking the intro of the FM81in 1981... a higher thinner grind profile on both 81 and the 78, around 1996 and a different 'boxed' Glock logo was introduced. Originals were (unecessarily) stronger and performered poorer as slicers. Had I known what FM78 was capable of, it would have saved me thousands and a lot of heartache - I've been unapoligetically knife obsessed since the cradle. There aint no one and no company that can sell me a better fixed blade outdoor/ military knife than the the Glock FM78, irrespective of price. It is my 50th anniversary exit knife. This is why I brought 7 of them. Peace, Outback Australia.

@@Revelation1316 Thanks for the generous post but I'm a bit confused by some of it. I thought the FM81 is the same thing but with the saw back. Is the FM78 thinner? Are the FM78 and FM81 made of different steel? I read the FM81 is made of soft steel. I own one and it is thick which makes it less useful for a number of things knives are used for. Ex: Battoning small logs for firewood. Here in the States the FM81 has a reputation for not holding it's edge long. Please clarify.

@@filippocorti6760 N.P. I think I understand your questions. I will attempt to clarify. You are correct FM81 has the saw back, introduced in 1981. And of course FM78 with straight spine (the first Glock) introduced in 1978. No, both FM78 and FM81 were made from the same steel and FM78 is not 'thinner' than FM81. What I meant was there were two different production runs of the same two knives. Prior to 'about' 1996 (I dont konw the exact year) both FM78 and FM81 has thicker blade stocks. Post '1996' they reduced the blade stock down too 5mm, again this applied to BOTH the FM78 and FM81. They also increased the saber grind making it start earlier about 33% down from the spine, probably to improve slicing efficiency. This is what I meant by there was 1 revolution of the knife in1996. Again, the logo changed from pre-1996 a G in a circle on thicker blade stock knives, to post-1996 a more square modern 'GL___ock' symbol for the thinner blade stock knives. You can I.D. your version from this. Both Glock FM78 and FM81 have acceptabble edge retention, imo...supported by an Army Ranger I saw on here. As you say and I agree, edge retention is not great, no. But you have to remember the philosophy of what the knife was designed for, as you know. Its an out door knife soldiers knife. You also cannot have a knife with excellent edge retention that is strong as hell (meaning it wont bend or chip easily) and that you will actually want to carry. This is a myth and doesn't exist! Believe me I have spent (and wasted) thousands of dollars and years believing this myth. You pay foe edge retention, but you get Axe like impact strength and compund-bow resilience in lateral strength! Again, I have never some accross a knife this strong yet this nimble. You can extract a round from a jammed GPMG with a Glock FM78, try doing that in a firefight with a Fallkniven A1. You can't, its too thick (and this was the first version the second is thicker!). Demonstrating Glock is still reasonably practical also. Hope this helps👍👊
