Hey I just found you but love these videos! Question: so I'm undergrad EE at a state school but we don't really have grad courses to take and also our electives (which is like how we choose a discipline) are very limited unfortunately but I have an internship and am graduating early so I want to know any advice! Most of the research done here isn't in power. It's in embedded systems and I'm finding it really hard to boost my resume in terms of research (even though I'm in a lot of leadership positions) but I really want to apply for PhD or masters. Any advice?
hmm If you want to do power in grad school i don’t think the embedded systems experience will hold you back! that experience is still super valuable, a bunch of those skills transfer over to power systems, so you can definitely make that work for the applications. also if i were you i wouldn’t worry about finding a program that’s super power-focused. you can definitely tailor your app to support a transition to power, but even so most grad programs are flexible, and you can specialize once you’re in. many profs will let you do your own thing as long as it fits somewhat within their work. for example i wanted to do VR/hci/haptics work from the moment i started MIT, and i currently do that but in a drones lab because it can be applied there. the sucky part is that im often left to figure things out by myself rather than following up on existing research in our lab, so there are always pros and cons!
that is so amazing! i would love to do business/work travel to japan, but alas, my work doesn't go there XD. congratulations! thank you for sharing
awww haha well maybe some other fun places? thank you!!
I just got recommend this video but I’m currently getting my masters in HCI and hope to get my PhD !! This is so cool to see very inspiring ❤
thank you 😊
Thank you for sharing
Amazing❤
ICRA 2025 Is due in 40 days 😭
Don’t panic you’ve got this 🤧❤️ Congratulations 🎉🎊 this is just the beginning
ahhh thank you 😩😂
Looks like a beautiful trip! I'm sure the paper you presented is just the first of many publications you'll have. You got this! ❤
thank you! i really hope so 😩😂❤️
i just found ur channel, i'm excited to see u post more! i am also a girl and thinking about getting a phd and i am also interested in robotics and start ups!! so it is really uplifting to see another girl into the same things. i would love to hear more about ur experience in doing a phd and start up at the same time and if a phd is worth it for doing a start up 💗
thank you, and it’s always great to hear there are more of us 😊 i haven’t really talked a lot about my start up but i definitely can!
Hey Ifueko! Loved this video and recently been binge watching your channel. Any way I can email you about my personal questions I have? Thank you!
i’m sorry i don’t take personal questions anymore because i just get so many and they are often the same question but specific to each persons own situation and it ends up requiring a deeper review. but if it’s something i really haven’t touched on in my videos or in comments and you feel comfortable anonymizing/generalizing your questions and asking publicly i can answer so that everyone can benefit!
6:35 I hope AI safety research was also part of the conference 😂
right 😂 i think it was lol
I spent 7 years on my PhD, and I wasn't doing a startup at the same time, and I didn't change advisors. I also don't know what difference the specific institutions make. But happy to see you feeling confident in your direction right now!
thanks tom 😊
Hey ifueko it’s nice to see you back, you mentioned that the time you would be finishing, it would be in your 9th year, Did you do a direct PhD route like entering from your bachelors degree ? Is the 9th year also inclusive of your Masters program as well
so i did my masters during undergrad (stanford’s coterm program) but it took me 6 years, the 9 years will just be the phd
Elon Musk is a con artist. Mark Zuckerberg stole his idea for Facebook from the Twins.
i guess i just use them as an example to say that we who struggle in this research world sometimes fail to get the recognition that people who didn’t have to go through it do. we definitely shouldn’t idolize them
Hey girl! I was literally jjust thinking about you and watched some of your videos (again) and was wondering if you was going to post. I'm definitely looking out for more videos because as a fellow black female engineer student and want to go to graduate school, it's so inspiring seeing someone that looks like me pursuing a higher education in tech. I'm glad that you are finding balance and I hope it continues ❤❤
thank you! i appreciate the support especially given my inconsistency 😊
Hey Ifueko! Good to see you posting again. I hope you're doing well 🙂
thank you 😊 i’m doing pretty good, hope you’re doing well too in the real world lol
Any recommendations on how to get start in AI in medicine and healthcare?
The interdisciplinary fields are a little bit tougher for beginners because they mainly focus on the applications and may assume you know the machine learning. I would recommend exploring some Kaggle competitions (if you search "kaggle competitions healthcare" or "kaggle competitons medicine" it should take you to the search page) and see how other people have solved the problem, then maybe try to make your own solution (referring to basic ML tutorials as you go) I also think its really useful to read survey papers, for you specifically on AI in healthcare and medicine, and that would also give you an idea of where the field is and what kinds of methods people are using
💜
hey everyone! now that I'm progressing in my research a bit more steadily, stay tuned for more videos on tech, robotics, and academia 😊
Does Stanford have a pass/no record policy? Did graduate school interviewers/admission reviewers interrogate you about the NC in organic chemistry? Just curious as I just finished my first year at Caltech and am worried about my C+ in multi variable calculus 😥
Yup except it’s pass/no pass. The no pass didn’t have an effect on my GPA. I didn’t have any interviews for grad school and nobody mentioned it or seemed to care to be honest. although i highly doubt they looked at my transcript in detail, probably just at my overall GPA
Does Stanford have a masters in nursing program?
I don’t think so. There are master’s programs at the med school, but I dont think nursing is included
How can you fail the exam and get a B as a final grade?
it depends on the class, a lot of CS classes would weigh the homework higher than tests so you can make up for it, but also there were huge curves in the grading of many classes when I was in undergrad that i imagine still exist today!
Hey a quick question about gpa's, as iam applying internationally gpa scores vary from university to university ,for instance in my university its really hard to get a 9.4 or 9.3 out of 10 but in other schools its really easy to get that kind of gpa. Does taking gre help here?
Hey! From my past experience I think that the reviewers are very aware of this and are instructed to take it into account. When people review your app they are basically told that GPAs vary from institution to institution (especially at international schools) so GPA is usually not the deciding factor when moving an applicant forward to the next stage of review. For many applicants the GPA just has to be “good enough,” especially if the institution has a reputation for being rigorous, as in that situation a lower GPA isn’t a huge indicator that someone wouldn’t be successful at MIT. While the GRE can somewhat help, I don’t think it is considered super heavily, so in my opinion your experiences (research/internships) will be considered more heavily than any test scores. That being said a high GRE score is never a bad thing 🙂
Just stumbled across your video from a work email and 1) I have NO idea what github is, no clue about python, etc but 2) I understood about 75% of the video and 3) think this is the coolest thing ever! lol I recently started using Notion so that probably helped a bit but absolutely LOVED this video. Wish my brain worked like this lol
The paper metioned in 5:43 might benefit from offline reinforcement learning.
hey ifueko, found your channel while looking for phd admissions vids, this was super informative! I'm thinking of applying to mit. Do you know if mit eecs students can do internships while they do their phd, and is it common?
i did two internships during MIT, one was google and one was for a fellowship. many people do them, just not every summer, i wouldn’t have done the second one if not for the fellowship, and your advisor will probably suggest that once is enough lol
Why do you do this PhD ?
that’s a long story i suppose, but I really do enjoy the research!
this is exactly what i've been looking for!! i'm a beginner in python and i've been trying to create a program that is almost exactly like this! would it be possible to make a tutorial for how to use this with our own databases and google calendars?
sure! do you mean databases outside of notion?
omg thank you!! i mean the databases created in notion!@@fancyfueko
So glad I found your channel 🫶🏻
thank you 🥹🫶🏾
Please I’m a Master student and I want to know how you understand things in real time ? Like when the teacher explain something
honestly i rarely understand the concepts fully when the professor explains it unless i know it beforehand. i feel like most people i meet are also like this and i spend a lot of time in office hours and reading and looking for videos/other online resources that explain it better, and sometimes the course material explains the concepts better. i do feel like you can teach yourself to be better at real time comprehension but i haven’t mastered that, especially not in the sciences
@@fancyfueko i really feel stupid before your comment and i think i just need to accept my nature and have to work enough than over.
@diasposangare1154 you’re definitely not stupid, i know it sucks to have to work harder than it seems others do but it will get easier!
While searching for info for grad schools for my youngest daughter (she’s currently at Brown), your channel popped up in my recommendations. OMG!!! You are so pretty and you’re a genius! I immediately subscribed and even though my daughter is interested in diplomacy and Law, I’m just so happy to see more young Ladies that look like us doing the darn thing at the highest level/s!!!!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
thank you so much 🙏🏾🥹 and congrats to you and your daughter! sounds like she has a bright future ahead, especially with such a supportive mom like you 😊
Hi my name is Stephanie , would it be possible to reach out to you via email or possible your contact number. I am currently in the process of applying and thanks so much for this video besides your tight schedule but I would like to ask you more direct questions about this program
@@fancyfueko thanks so much It isnt to review my application honestly, I just wanted to have a general insight on how this program is going for you at the moment and then if I do get in bt Gods grace , I do get to meet you and say you were part of the people who inspired me to get into this school :)
Would love to see a video on your journey to robotics and how beginners can learn!
hey I am an international student who just finished with an undegrad degree from Electrical and Electronics Engineering, would I be able to apply to the PhD straight fully funded and finish in 5 years?
it’s definitely possible but difficult to do, you would need to plan ahead!
@@fancyfueko thank you
Amazinggggg
Thanks a lot for this great video! Can you give more information on how are supervisors allocated for new PhD students? Does MIT EECS has first-year rotations in different labs?
@fancyfueko
there’s actually no standard way in EECS, we don’t have rotations in this department like others do. but usually if you’re accepted you’ll have meetings with different professors during visit days, and one of them may offer you a funded position in their lab. however sometimes you are just given a fellowship for one or more years, but no funding offer from any of the advisors you meet with. however you will likely not be accepted without some sort of interest from at least one professor!
This is awesome! would love to see the how it compares to linear programming and other optimizers algos!
ooh great suggestion, stay tuned 🙂
Hey, the video is truly enjoyable. What is your name, by the way? I am your new subscriber!
thank you! my name is Ifueko, thanks for subscribing 😊
Awesome video! Will you be attending the IROS 2023 conference coming up soon in Detroit?
Nope but I wish! I didn’t make the submission deadline back in february 😢 but hopefully next year I’ll be at both ICRA and IROS!
Do researcher in MIT including grad students are really good in solving maths problem ?
not everyone has to be, but many people here are math experts!
Amazing video Ifueko! 😊 I hope you've been well and best of luck with the new school year!
thanks doctor 😊
Very nice video & definitely more vlogs like this
I cant believe the school year is already starting 😭 what kind of content would you want to see this fall?
