That's weird she couldn't stand him because Dick York off screen was one of the most caring and compassionate humanitarians with several charities. He was by far the most liked actor by the rest of the co-stars in the series.

She got around… In 1954, Montgomery married New York City socialite Frederick Gallatin Cammann- the couple divorced less than a year later. She was married to Academy Award winning actor Gig Young from 1956 to 1963 she was married to director-producer William Asher from 1963 until their divorce in 1973. They had three children: William, Robert and Rebecca. The latter two pregnancies were incorporated into Bewitched as Samantha's pregnancies. During the eighth year of the show, Montgomery fell in love with director Richard Michaels. Their resulting affair led to the end of both of their marriages, as well as the end of the series. They moved in together when shooting ended in 1972; the relationship lasted two and a half years. On January 28, 1993, she married actor Robert Foxworth, after living with him for nearly twenty years. They remained married until her death in 1995 According to author Herbie J Pilato, Montgomery had an affair with Alexander Godunov while she was living with Foxworth but was not yet married to him. Godunov was found dead on May 18, 1995, the day Montgomery died,[17] but it is believed that he died several days before Montgomery. Throughout the run of Bewitched, many references to Patterson, New York, were made on the series. The Putnam County town was the site of the Montgomery homestead, and it was also the place where she spent her childhood summers. In later years, her mother lived in the family farmhouse on Cushman Road.

Should have cancelled the show when York left. After that it was terrible. It ran for too long and they ran out of material and it was downright silly and boring. Just like Andy Griffith; should have been cancelled when Don Knotts left the show because he WAS the show and it was absolutely terrible after he left. Money is a great motivator. They must have known the shows became terrible but went on anyway

Elizabeth Montgomery accepted the invitation to be co-Grand Marshall of the LA Pride Parade, with her friend and former 'Bewitched' costar Dick Sargent, who had recently come out as gay. On the morning of June 28, 1993 - the day of the parade - her personal hairdresser arrived at her house to do her hair and make-up. When he went upstairs to her bedroom, he saw Liz with her head down into the palms of her hands, crying uncontrollably on the side of the bed. He asked what was wrong, and she told him she had just found out that her mother died a few hours earlier. He went over to sit on the bed next to her, to comfort the 59 year old actress, and told her she didn't have to attend the parade - they would understand. She told him she couldn't drop out; she had committed to her friend Dick Sargent and had committed to her fans in the community. She had to do it. He ended up doing her hair and make-up, and helped her pick out her clothes for the day. Yet she still couldn't stop crying, and her eye make-up kept smudging. She didn't want her fans seeing her like that. Her hairdresser then went over to her collection of sunglasses, and picked out a pair of glasses that would cover all her eyes. "This is what you'll do today", he said. He instructed her to wear her sunglasses all day, even if she went inside. As the day went on, she never took her sunglasses off. There was a record number of attendees that day, mostly 'Bewitched' fans who wanted to see their favorite two stars. She didn't disappoint. To this day, many people still post pictures on social media of the photos they took with her that day, or the autograph they got from her that day. No one knew about her heartbreak of losing her mother. Sad to say, Montgomery herself died at 62, less than three years after her mother died.

It's weird how we in the audience accepted the change in Darrin. Can you imagine going over to your aunt's house, and she has a different husband, but everybody acts like he's the same one and has always been, i.e., the same uncle you've known all your life? Still, I liked the original and true Darrin, Dick York. His replacement, Dick Sergeant, was a grumpy imposter, IMO.

Dick Sargent gave off "gay vibes" and there is certainly nothing wrong with that, but he was not a right choice for a show that centers around the relationship of a hetero couple.

Fans need to remember, despite how they feel about one actor or the other, they din't have to work with that actor or actress. It's like people, in their workplace, there may be people, or person, they don't care for. For Elizabeth, it was Dick York, for whatever her reasons. In a 1967 or 1968 onset interview, Elizabeth was asked about the atmosphere on the set. She said it was fun coming to work. She never brought her feelings toward York to the set and least of all, to the public. She never mentioned her feelings, even twenty years later. Personally, i love BEWITCHED in its entirety. I will say that I look at Dick Sargent's Darrin as a maturation of Dick York's Darrin. This was probably brought on by the changes taking place in society. I find Sargent's Darrin discussed his issues, with Endora, with Sam. An example, at the end of MONY SAMMY, Darrin and Sam are discussing why Endora acts the way she does. Nice.

Once again, put up a "Bewitched" video here on RUclips and out came all the "Sargent haters." PATHETIC, most of the commentators below clearly use crack. Montgomery was the star of the show for fuck sake, people. She didn't seem to like her first leading man, Dick York. get over yourselves. No doubt, York was super talented but he apparently had the "hots" for Montgomery and he didn't even hide the fact. York was married with five children when he did the show, I won't comment more on that and may he rest in peace. Montgomery preferred Dick Sargent, she just radiated around him and it shows in all the publicity photos they did for the show, and unlike the below commentators, Montgomery was a super classy lady in the truest sense, she never EVER "dished" York in public, MAY ALL REST IN PEACE.

There’s no denying the onscreen chemistry there was between Dick York and Elizabeth Montgomery. After Dick York left the show I personally lost interest in watching Bewitched because of the lack of chemistry between Elizabeth Montgomery & Dick Sargent. The show didn’t have the same “magic” for me. I remember my mom enjoyed Dick York’s facial expressions in each episode and so did I. ❤

The advantage is that William Froug had over us is that he was there and saw what went on. Dick York's own words, in an interview that he did in the late 80s or early 90s, described their first meeting for the audition. All he did was to describe Elizabeth for her physical beauty. This attitude carried over onto the set by him staring at her. I recently read an article on psychology, on the topic of women's feelings about gawking that said, girls and women don't like to be stared at. York's gawking at Liz bugged her, but I think it went further than that. I can't confirm this, but I read that Liz slapped York and that when Dick York had to leave, she supposedly said to Bill Asher, "Are you going to listen to me now?" One can love the people they work with, on a professional level, but when the line is crossed, then the problems start. When Liz spoke of BEWITCHED, she always pointed out the talented cast and crew that worked on BEWITCHED. Bernie Kopell once said that people loved Elizabeth, from a professional standpoint. Erin Murphy loved her on a personal level, and is still friends with Liz's adult children. Liz also loved Dick Sargent, as a dear friend, as he did her. Sargent, I think, looked upon her as a person and with respect. Liz was one of Sargent's biggest supporter. Boris Karloff was so impressed with Elizabeth Montgomery, after working in one of his TV projects, that he wanted her to play a character in the movie "Marnie". But Liz was committed to BEWITCHED. Finally, two topics, one a disclaimer. I have no bad feelings toward Dick York. He was a fine actor. I like his Darrin, generally speaking, in seasons one and two, because he was calmer and less angry than in seasons three thru five, which Dick York didn't like it, either. Second, I try to stay out of people's private lives. This is why Elizabeth didn't grant interviews for over twenty years, until she gave an interview with Herbie Pilato, for his book "The Bewitched Book". He updated the book after Liz died now titled "Bewitched Forever". The articles we keep seeing about the cause of the end of the Asher's marriage blame Elizabeth for the breakup and the Richard Michaels' relationship. Well, blame the woman. In reality, it was Bill Asher who destroyed their marriage. He had cheated on her before more than once. In the REELZ Elizabeth Montgomery/Bewitched special in April (It's here on YT), Bernie Kopell, who was at their home, overheard Liz rip Asher a new one. Asher admitted, in the 1999 A&E special, that the breakup was his fault. They stayed close for the sake of their kids. Liz was very family oriented. The proof of that, are in the names of her children. For example, her daughter is Rebecca Elizabeth Asher. Rebecca was Liz's grandmother's name and Elizabeth could've been given to her, by her Mom, for herself or Liz's own mother. Liz used family names for her sons as well. In my view, Liz must've considered their marriage was over. Richard Michaels' marriage was also over. That special, mentioned above, also says that he had an eye for Liz. In my view, Bill Asher never got over Elizabeth. Watch the unveiling of the statue of Elizabeth in Salem. Asher looks at it with feeling. Pilato said that he felt that Asher still had feelings for her.
