平和獅子 (HEIWA JISHI)
Mende Ryuzan - Shakuhachi
Joseph Myoushin Sanger - Shakuhachi
Piece composed by Joseph Myoushin Sanger
Performed at Mende Ryuzan's concert on April 27th, 2024 at Hatsukaichi Cultural Hall, Hiroshima.
The simple translation of the title is "Peace Lion", but the JISHI (or SHISHI) is more like a mythical creature inspired by a lion. Statues of pairs of SHISHI are often seen outside temples or shrines in Japan, guarding against evil spirits. My teacher, Mende-sensei, suggested the title after we discussed the imagery within the piece.
This was my first experience of writing for the shakuhachi, in fact my first experience of committing notes to paper in this way at all, having spent most of my life...

Sokkan / 息観 (Contemplating the breath)
Просмотров 1493 месяца назад
This is my performance of Sokkan at the annual summer recital of the Gokuu Shakuhachi School in Hiroshima, Japan. Played on a 2.3 shakuhachi (Bb) made by my teacher, Mende Ryuzan. I've been rather busy so I haven't been keeping up with the "All The Honkyoku In Order" challenge I set myself! I've also got a lot on for the next couple of months, so I will resume regular broadcasts after the summe...
6: SAGARI-HA / 下り葉 (Hanging Leaves)
Просмотров 1084 месяца назад
This piece originated in the Nezasa school of northern Japan. The title means “falling leaves”, or “hanging leaves”. As with the previous piece, NEZASA SHIRABE, it features a technique called KOMIBUKI or interrupted breath, to simulate the sound of wind through a bamboo grove. As it is often played in a pair with NEZASA SHIRABE, I recorded them both together on June 9th, 2024. The piece is play...
5: NEZASA SHIRABE / 根笹調 (Nezasa School Prelude)
Просмотров 524 месяца назад
As with the previous piece, HONSHIRABE, the final kanji means exploration, or melody. The NEZASA school of shakuhachi began in northern Japan. It features a technique called KOMIBUKI, or interrupted breath, which evokes the sound of the wind in a bamboo grove, rattling the young shoots against the older, more mature bamboo poles. As it is often played in a pair with the following piece SAGARIHA...
4: HONSHIRABE / 本調 (Root Melody)
Просмотров 904 месяца назад
The kanji for HON means root, or origin, and SHIRABE is exploration, or melody. It is, on the face of it, the simplest honkyoku in the repertoire, but contains many of the key elements found in much longer, more complex pieces. I find it fascinating, and quite wonderful, that I am still learning how to play this piece. The longer I spend with the shakuhachi and these honkyoku, the more I realis...
3: TAMUKE / 手向 (Parting Gift)
Просмотров 535 месяцев назад
The piece’s title, TAMUKE, translates roughly as “Parting Gift”. This is the first real honkyoku which I studied, and as with the rest of the pieces I’m still trying to get to the bottom of it. It is a lament, and it’s common for shakuhachi players to play it for the recently departed. The piece is played on a 2.3 shakuhachi, in the key of Bb, made by my teacher. It was recorded on May 30th, 20...
2: KUMOI-JISHI / 雲井獅子 (Cloud Lions)
Просмотров 1345 месяцев назад
The piece’s title, KUMOI-JISHI, translates roughly as “Cloud Lions”. As with the previous piece, the JISHI is a mythical creature. It’s another “semi-honkyoku”, as the piece has a meter and rhythm. The piece is played on a 1.8 (standard length) shakuhachi, made by my teacher. I think I played it a little too fast! It was recorded on May 27th, 2024. This is the second video in a series in which,...

1: AZUMA-JISHI / 吾妻獅子 (The Lion of the East) The piece’s title, AZUMA-JISHI, translates roughly as “The Lion Of The East”. Of course, there were no lions in Japan, so the JISHI is a sort of mythical creature. It was written in the 18th century and is actually an excerpt from a much longer piece. My teacher has referred to this piece as a “semi-honkyoku”, as the piece has a meter and rhythm, unl...

A prelude, or warm-up piece from the Nezasa school in northern Japan. Really great, balanced, sound and great kata, Joseph san.
Thank you so much! 🙏
So true about the difficulty of honkyoku.
Mende was my first exposure to the honkyoku world with Tamuke (that can be fund on youtube, with notation Tozan style) on 2.2 shakuhachi probably made by himself. So always in my heart. Good to discover your channel.
Thank you! I will mention that to him next time I see him. Your channel looks very nice, too.
@@myoushin_shakuhachi Thank you I appreciated. At some point I have fund a Tamuke version by him with a 1.8 (my favorite shakuhachi size) but I have lost it. Anyway thanks
Beautiful playing sir! Are you playing these in the order the honkyoku are taught in Gokuu ryu?
Thank you! Actually no, we jumped around the book a lot when I was first studying the pieces. But for the sake of structure I'm playing them in the order they appear in the book.
@@myoushin_shakuhachi very nice, Thank you for telling me. It’s a great idea to have them in the front of the honkyoku book since they are very beautiful, accessible, (and useful on gigs!). Thanks for posting such an interesting project! Please keep going 💪
@@adamrshaku thanks for the motivation!🙏
👏
Yessir! Fantastiche
Lovely! The pulsation repetition is really captivating.
All of a sudden, the weather outside changes.
really love these more minimal lines, recording sounds great too
Hey thanks @lukesanger! It's a sort of "demonstration piece", one of my students wants to learn in the traditional oral (aural) tradition, without the score, which is quite hard when you only see each other twice a month!
The sound and visuals are on point! Lovely!
Thank you brother Sanger!
Lumpy gravy
These are probably some of the most accurate automatically generated subtitles I've seen yet! Not sure about "shoes", I guess that must be your interpretation😃. Have a look at the transcript.
❤ Beautifully played and evocative of the airy life of cranes!
Thank you!
Ah wonderful, love it! Thanks for posting!!

Wonderful performance, Myoushin-san! Thank you for sharing it with us.
Oh, that was quick! Thank you very much, Kyuzan-san!
This is such a refreshing take on a well-worn piece. This transports the atmosphere several thousand miles East to somewhere new and exotic (and a few thousand miles West as well!)
That's a very kind and thoughtful comment, thank you!
Holy shakuflexophone Batman, this is incredible. Why isn't the whole world playing these now that it's 2022???? Love it. I also like how you Deutschified an already German name ;P
Haha, thanks Roni!
Thank you Joe for your playing and for recording this. Also thanks to all those who came, I have a good memory of a summer's evening.
You are very welcome! Thank you, too, it was a lovely gig.
