09.08.24 Co Owning the House of the Lord
We apologize that the first 6 minutes of this video were lost, so it starts abruptly.
In this second sermon of our series on Acts, Pastor Andrew looks at the call to sharing and co-ownership from Acts 4:27-37 through the competing lenses of Rights and Responsibilities. This recording begins just as he is getting into explaining the idea of Rights, drawing on a maxim he learned as a teenager: "a right is something you can take and keep by force".

09.01.24 A Place to Go When There’s Nowhere to Go
Просмотров 44 часа назад
Kicking off our 5-part series on the early church in the Book of Acts, Pastor Andrew focuses on the four major features of the fledgling community identified in Acts 2:32-47 (teaching, fellowship, sharing, and prayer). These features were and remain the core ministries of Jesus' church today, and serve to establish the much-needed "third space" of faith communities through time.
07.07.24 Reflections

With Pastor Andrew out of town, two of Admiral Church's parishioners offer their reflections, along with a surprise visit from a minister from out of state who blesses the Eucharist. The first reflection on the power of a "secret identity" is Anita Shaffer (retired internal medical doctor), followed by Wes Andersen (retired pharmacist), with communion by Rev. Robert Nicholson.
07.28.24 Witnessing A New Kind of Messiah

In our final sermon in this series, Pastor Andrew examines what kind of Savior Mark is pointing us to in Mark 10:32-52. Letting go of the image of standing atop the pyramid of Empire, we find ourselves standing shoulder to shoulder around the banquet table.

08.18.24 The Cost of Seeing Differently

Our third sermon on John's understanding of the Way of Jesus finds us at John 15:12-27, considering the warning Jesus gives to His disciples about what is in store for them who have come to stand outside "the world". Pastor Andrew relays two tales from history to illuminate the challenge of calling the powerful to see an alternative to their own hegemonic views, a challenge which leads to suffe...
08.11.24 The Type of Vision Jesus Brings
Просмотров 514 дней назад
Continuing the exploration of Johannine theology, we come to John 12:17-36 as we consider the common belief in Christianity that we are called to sacrifice ourselves for the faith. Looking into the two words both translated "life" in this text reveals a nuance about what it is we are called to give up in order to follow Jesus.
08.04.24 The Problem of Being Right

In our journey through the theology of John's Gospel, we begin with John 3:16 within its context of the discussion between Jesus and the Pharisee leader Nicodemus (John 3:1-21). We consider the concept of "the world" (Gk: kosmos) that John uses as a contrast to the value system of Jesus and ask ourselves, "Do we really know what abundant life even is?".
07.21.24 Witness of the Disciples
Просмотров 4Месяц назад
Looking again at the "Messianic secret", this time Jesus' commanding the disciples to silence in Mark 8:27-30 and 9:2-10, Pastor Andrew considers how sometimes there are things we can only learn by going through them. Jesus seems to have this message for His disciples, who still don't grasp the meaning of Messiah, perhaps looking more to Zechariah than Isaiah.
07.14.24 Witness of the Healed
Просмотров 6Месяц назад
In Mark's Gospel, we see Jesus silence those who recognize Him. In this sermon, Pastor Andrew explores the recognition that comes from those who He heals in Mark 1:40-45, 7:31-37, and 8:22-26. Jesus is more than a healer, He is a Savior, and building a reputation as a miracle worker could distract those who come after from the true healing He can provide.
06.30.24 We Are More Loving Without Hell
Просмотров 7Месяц назад
In this final sermon on undermining Hell in Christian theology, Pastor Andrew dives into Matthew 18:1-9, which connects Jesus' love of children with a repeat of His admonishment from Chapter 5 to "cut off" whatever causes you to stumble. Here we see, again in a different light, that we are called away from an ethic of condemnation and fear, and called toward the liberation and renewal only foun...
06.23.24 Hell's Impact on the Kingdom
Просмотров 12Месяц назад
Jesus' teaching on the "woes of the Pharisees" (Matthew 23:13-39) can be seen as an opportunity to view Jesus as condemning people, but the discourse is being offered to the disciples. His fear is that His followers will spend more time splitting hairs on what is (and is not) part of the Kingdom rather than learning how to live into a realm of grace.
06.16.24 Hell's Impact on Grace
Просмотров 6Месяц назад
Continuing our look at Hell in Matthew's Gospel, we come to Matthew 10:26-39 and Jesus' concern about divisions among people and God's claim on all of us. Traditional understandings of Hell seem to negate grace, yet Pastor Andrew argues that it is our unwillingness to be in awe that usually undermines God's grace.
06.09.24 Jesus' Relationship with Hell
Месяц назад
Continuing our examination of Hell in Matthew's Gospel, Pastor Andrew looks at Jesus' call to holiness in Chapter 5, verses 21-30. Jesus is trying to help us figure out what to do with our normal and natural feelings of anger and sexual desire. At the center of Jesus' concern is not human "goodness", but the human response to suffering.
06.02.24 The Function of Hell
Просмотров 2Месяц назад
In considering the Judgment Scene at the end of Matthew's Gospel, Pastor Andrew begins this five-part series to undermine the popular notions of Hell and re-orient us towards the purposes of these Scriptures. Here we see our own desire for punishment upon our enemies as a conviction that we have not been perfected in love.

Actually 9:05 God still requires sacrifice. But not blood sacrifice. The power of the cross is you believe on that great sacrifice to be the blood that atones for your sin. Your job is to believe, be repentant, learning how to turn away from your sins, and if you mess up, get back right and keep going. You’re called to deny your flesh and carnality and become a person of spirit. The flesh will one day die but the spirit lives on and goes into the incorruptible heavenly body. Queer theology doesn’t work because yes you can come to Christ queer, you can come to Christ where ever you’re at actually. But the point is you’re not supposed to stay there. It’s true because of the demonic you could be “born this way” but Jesus came so you could become born again. Basically the devil is in the world and he grooms us all to be toxic. Even heterosexual people have deep toxic strongholds he tries to have them perpetuate. So heterosexual people have to change too. It’s not like oh just the queer community needs to be saved. We all do. Look at society. Look at how even straight couple toxicly raise children. We were all groomed by the devils tactics and indoctrinated into his ideals for society. Jesus is counter culture. Jesus is actual punk rock. Toxicity is the norm. Healing and freedom is not. The devil is a huge projecting narcissist. He’ll claim Christian’s are brainwashed when he’s brainwashed society to follow his ways. He’s an Angel of “light” he likes to look like true peace and love and acceptance but he’s a covert abuser. He doesn’t give the demons rest or “peace” unless they do evil. Satan hates when people live righteously and will punish them. While God is love and gives you freewill to choose what you want to do. You’re not forced to submit. It’s not true love if you’re forced to follow. But with freewill we see people use it to do evil and lots of people get hurt. Children get groomed and abused. But it’s a catch 22. People want God to stop evil, yet they don’t want God to control people. You can’t have both. That’s why the Bible is about repenting, leaving toxic ways behind, gaining self control and freedom to protect yourself and others. If God allowed everyone to do whatever they wanted to do Heaven would be a replica of earth. In heaven the abused and innocent children are safe and protected and happy. God can’t let those same people in that hurt people in a sacred place. That’s why we need to change, and our thoughts, hearts, and actions are all being tested so we can prove ourselves approved and be a safe person for paradise. It’s up to you. 😇
