Guitar & Drums Simultaneously? ONE MAN BAND CHALLENGE

Hot Pepper Challenge SONG 🔥 Recording Music On Fire!
Why is everybody being so mean, for being recorded on a four track tape recorder it sounds amazing. Also there’s nothing wrong with your voice. I like this, it kinda feels like a ween demo or something. Great work!
@@kalvynjr5966 Everyone becomes a critic on the internet 😂 Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate you! And don't worry, mean words from random people won't hurt me 😊
I use a Yamaha MT8X 8 track a Yamaha MT120 and a Roberts reel to reel, then mix down to a Craig cassette recorder . I have 2 digital recorders and a Tascam interface but I'm going to just use tape. The quality is night and day
@@lawrencerasmus Hello Lawrence, is it possible this comment should be on the Fall Song Challenge video? You have a nice collection there! I'm curious what you'll come up with (if you're participating). Tape for the win!
Oh man that was awesome! Thanks for starting this up again Yellow! That's a great idea to use each week for each step of the process. I'm hoping to participate this year as well! Thanks for reaching out and that ending sounds familiar 😜
@@424Recording Thanks for starting it in the first place, Mike! People really enjoyed this over the years including me, it must live on. I think you mentioned the schedule in one of your videos. You can certainly stare into a sunset or a sunrise. It’s actually prime time for sun gazing
@@alexfeigmusic of course you can. Doesn't mean you should 🤣 The sun will burn your retina if you stare into it for some time
@@YellowJelloMusic it’s actually beneficial to your eyes and overall health but you never know until you try. Of course you can record an album in two days but should you?
@@alexfeigmusic I don't know if you're trolling but a quick search says this: Looking at the sun can (and does) cause short-term-and sometimes long-term-damage to your vision. Whether you're laying on a beach looking up at the sun or watching beautiful sunset, exposing your eyes directly to the sun's rays is never a good idea. Maybe I shouldn't but thanks for watching the video, hope you enjoyed it.
@@YellowJelloMusicI’m not trying to troll, except for the snarky comment about recording. I’m serious about sun gazing and its benefits but I understand that’s not what google or the medical industry want to promote. Keep making music though that’s never a bad idea, and I’m not trying to be sarcastic. Have a great day

Jeffrey Novak style
Never heard of this guy, do you mean the music style? Because he's using both of his hands for guitar and only his feet for drums

@@DaveLecian I want 4 arms then 🤣 Pit stop sounds interesting 🤔
What should I try next?
Was going to suggest something silly, like singing whilst playing a wind instrument... but singing through a kazoo (not technically a wind instrument!) would sound like cool distortion
@@MrKarlGP that's a great idea! Saxophone players use a similar technique to get those intense growly notes. They have to hum any kind of note that's different from the one they're actually playing (which is quite confusing for the brain too, I imagine 😅)
@@YellowJelloMusic You could attach a funnel to the end of the kazoo that you would normally hold in your mouth and tape the whole thing to a stand, so that you could move your mouth and lips enough to sing actual words through it rather than just "ooooo"
@@MrKarlGP 😮 big brain move! I have to try this

@@brookmelee5983 I don't think so. How?
@@YellowJelloMusic Record on 1,2,3 - bounce those to 4. Record on 1,2 - bounce those to 3. Record on 1,2.

@@Hello-pl2qe thanks for your feedback and watching, appreciate it either way 😁
I love doing these challenge things, myself. Thanks for videoing yours and putting it out for others to witness your creative process. This was really inspiring!
@@the_som Hey, challenges are most likely my favorite thing when it comes to doing music! What are some challenges you've done and recommend to try? Thanks for watching, it's really motivating to get this feedback, I always hope it inspires someone 💛
@@YellowJelloMusic I’ve tried and failed but want to try again to do the write/record an album in a day like this video you’ve made here. But other ones I’ve done that I recommend are write a whole album using an instrument you don’t know how to play or only know moderately how to play. For me that was piano. But I’ve also tried to record albums where I don’t use an actual drum set and instead make up a drum set with hand percussion or any other kind of percussive sound. I’ve done one that was a “quiet” album that I could record in an apartment so I ended up using a lot of electric drum & keyboard stuff. One of the things I’m really bad about doing is layering and layering so I’m currently working on one that won’t use anymore than 8 tracks so that means no bouncing. I’m not really sure how interesting those may be but that’s some of the stuff I’ve done. I look forward to checking out the whole album that you’ve made here as well as your other videos!
@@the_som Those are great, I'll add them to my list of challenges, thanks! I'm currently working on a kinda one man band challenge, recording everything simultaneously. Do you have a cassette 8 track?
@@YellowJelloMusic No, it’s a digital one. But I do have a 414 like yours as well as a 424! BTW I listened to the album you made for this video and really enjoy it. I’m planning on listening to the other albums you have on bandcamp. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the Elephant Six Recording but your stuff really reminds me of some of the stuff in that collective.
@@the_som I see, nice! Thank you so much! I've heard of them but never really listened to those bands so I guess it's a lucky coincidence
more videos pls
@@user-qk6is3gn6v I'm working on it! 😉 What type would you like the most?

Looked like an idyllic location! Were you tempted to record the heavy rainfall for one of the tracks?
It was really beautiful! Of course but since I was busy with the song itself I didn't catch it, the rain didn't last long. Instead I have happy little accidents - birds singing in some tracks
You are funny af!
You have a great sense of humor, Jason 😀
Excellent video man! Loved every minute of it. So cool that you got so much done in basically a day. You probably could have made a double album if you had two fulls days out there!
@@jasonelambeth thank you so much, Jason! (Jasons teamed up on me) 😅 Yeah, there were more challenges I wanted to try which would result in other songs
What's the most interesting place you've recorded at?
Probably in my car in the driveway. Wanted to do vocals and didn't want to wake the kids.
@@JeffHendricks smart, car is a nice vocal booth. Also recorded there once
When I was recording other people, we used wherever we could. I recorded in people's apartments, my parents house, other people's parent's house. We needed a room to record vocals and used a shower, the echo was amazing.
@@MikeFoerster Oh yeah, bathrooms are well known for the amazing reverb. I've just remembered we recorded in an old barn with my band, very effective for drums
Thus far, it's on top of an old retired fire watchtower. I use a Tascam Porta Two, and sometimes, I'll run it on batteries in fun places. I think I'll try recording at the beach by the ocean next!
Do u need a tape in the 4track when doing this
No, it isn't going through the tape, I'm just using the preamps the Tascam has. They are nice and fuzzy. What machine do you have?
How many semitones does the pitch weel go? So apparently my fostex 160 slows down/speeds up tape speed by ±12% but idk how that affects pitch. So would all the way counter-clockwise be -4 semitones and all the way clockwise be +3 semitones?
Not sure about Fostex 4 tracks and math definitely isn't my strength 😄 Tascam Portastudios go minor 3rd (3 semitones) to each side from the center. Have you tried googling any info about Fostex? Seems strange the only provided info would be in percentage...
Just curious. I have an interface with only 2 inputs. Any way to do this as 2 stereo outs (from 414) that can be split later in the DAW? I know that I could output 2 separate passes in stereo and combine later but I fear that they won't line up.... Also how do you deal with the high speed of the 414? Do you need to capture it as higher sample rate since you will need to pitch-correct it?
Hello! Theoretically possible. Two cables of two RCA connectors -> stereo jack and setting your inputs in DAW as stereo might work. Two passes definitely won't line up.
What do you mean by the speed question? What pitch correction? It doesn't matter at what speed you're bouncing it to the DAW as long as it's the same speed you were recording it. Same as any other audio source, it will sound the same bounced as you can hear it from the 414
@@YellowJelloMusic Ah OK haven't tried yet from the 414. I thought maybe the high speed would mean that the tracks sent to the DAW wouldn't be 'normal' speed and would either need to be adjusted 2x faster or 50% slower (whichever direction it'd go).
@@jebbylawless nah, you're just transferring audio, same as recording anything through the interface, computer doesn't have any speed settings 😀 The only problem is putting a cassette into a regular tape deck or walkman which have a slower speed than 4 tracks do
Genuinely underrated video.
Yo! Thank you for saying that. Why is it you think?
It’s not doing numbers while it should because this here is a proof of how easy it is to turn anything into a distortion/fuzz pedal and yet people still buy them for hundreds of dollars saying “it’s complicated to make” You just made a super easy “fun fact” video that’s short and sweet to watch
@@camenskycameron8413 true, it's ridiculous how much some fuzz pedals cost. Thank you for watching and the kind words, appreciate it!
Nice one! Especially the end rocks!
Thank you! Yeah, I'm proud of the end 😀
I make the same face when i bounce my 4 track into my daw. Ive only got 22 yrs of 4x4 recordings to go now,...LoL. Great vid!!!
