I am tired of the male online critics reviewing Wicked who can't seem to stop themselves from saying upfront, "I don't like musicals." Then why are they reviewing a musical? Can you imagine how a woman critic would be dragged if she posted a review of a superhero movie and the first thing out of her mouth is that, "I hate superhero movies." You'd think, "Thanks for letting me know you have no objectivity." What many of these shockingly ignorant movie bros don't understand is that musicals are a very difficult to make, well-respected and well-loved genre of film among film professionals, even those who aren't known for making them themselves. Does anyone think Spielberg did a remake of West Side Story because he needed the money? Of course not. He did so because he loves the genre and always wanted to make a musical. And that maestro of the gangster genre Martin Scorsese made the musical New York, New York. Marty said that words failed him when trying to describe how beautiful he thought some of the musicals in Hollywood's golden age were. And if you attend film school, you study the marvelous creations made by musical directors like Vincent Minnelli and Stanley Donen. Nobody says in film school, "Well, the only films that make huge sums of money are super hero flicks and animation so we won't bother to study anything else." I believe many men feel compelled to state how much they don't like musicals because they see negative attitudes towards them as proof of masculinity. Never mind that prior to the politically turbulent 1960's when the genre fell out of favor because they were seen as too corny and unrealistic during a time of social upheaval, musicals were a very popular type of film that was enjoyed by all kinds of folks, including straight men. Also, tons of little boys wanted to be song-and-dance men like Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Bobby Van, Tommy Rall, Bob Fosse, The Nicholas Brothers, Sammy Davis Jr., Gregory Hines, Russ Tamblyn. And they wanted to sing and dance like the guys in the square dance sequence of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. But in the 70's through the 2010's, it became acceptable to disparage musicals as a genre evidently because in real life, people don't burst into song and dance at the drop of a hat, despite the fact that the average action film isn't exactly packed with gritty realism. And even more importantly, in the culture at large, musicals were branded as so frivolous they were something that only straight women and gay men were allowed to enjoy. So essentially, they were unimportant. That's B.S. B.S B.S.

I say this with the utmost love and admiration; Wicked should be subtitled "Revenge of the theater kids." It is made by theater kids, staring theater kids (Erivo, Grande-Butera, Bailey) and for theater kids and those who are theater kids at heart.

I never cared about Colin prior to this season because the show treated him like a complete dumbass with no self respect for two seasons. And this season he was STILL a dumbass with no self respect who just so happened to have sex with multiple women before realizing out of nowhere he loves Penelope. It makes no goddamn sense.

This entire season could have been better if they had showed and didn’t tell the audience everything

I feel ya. On the lighting choices, I think they’re intentional as a commentary on the situation. You mentioned it was brighter when Elphaba and Fiyero were interacting- I interpreted that as there’s sparks flying between them and therefore her world is brighter for it. Versus the bleakness of the classroom where the goat is being hated on.

I loved the Wizard of Oz and loved this too. It felt right, it worked well and I am a fan of musicals in any case so this is right up my alley. I ignored the haters and watched it with my mum. We both can't wait for part 2 in just under a years time. I hope any changes they have made to the second part are for the good though, it would disappoint me if it wasn't as brilliant as part 1.

So I’ve been on a mission to watch the other Oscar faves and I just haven’t seen Anora yet. But I just strongly feel like Cynthia and Wicked deserve recognition. Anora would be an irregular Oscar pick as well and Mikey is pretty young to win, anything is possible but I feel like GENUINELY no one else has topped Cynthia. I feel like Block busters, spectacle and musical theatre are all reasons people count Wicked out but they TRULY created pretty much a masterpiece and I really want that Oscar win, get her EGOT AND be the second Black Woman IN HISTORY to win Best Actress and youngest EGOT winner in history. Come on man let’s make history

100% agree! And what you said toward the end about Oscar noms and LaLa Land. They better rack em right on up for Wicked. This film has brightened so many of our lives. Every single artist and person involved did such a tremendous job. They deserve their flowers for this. Looking forward to Part 2 💚🩷🧹🫧

Yes !!! the movie was absolutely brilliant. I’ve seen it three times already. I had not been to a movie at a Theatre since 2018.

You had already earned a sub for your smart and funny commentary even before you said nice things about a movie I worked very hard on (Inside Out 2), so cheers! I am a lighting/color guy. My take on the Wicked lighting is not that it was bad really, I was just disappointed by some of the choices that were made, as it seems you were too. The color grading and VFX compositing I felt was pretty strange, and ended up making things look more like a gritty Marvel movie than The Wizard of Oz. Like, you're going to literally copy the Wizard of Oz's title cards but not its iconic technicolor palette? Compare with what Gerwig and Prieto did with Barbie (genius), or on a much lower budget and similarly digital shoot what Ti West did with Pearl, also very inspired by Oz, and it makes the color look of Wicked feel like a major missed opportunity. And I got very annoyed by the excessive use of sun lens flares. (Once or twice for expressive effect, sure, cool. Multiple times in almost every scene, consistently washing out the colors, even covering up the actors' performances, staaap!) That said, there were a couple of scenes with inspired use of color in Wicked, like that scene where there was the colored glass mobile that made Cynthia's face skew to her normal flesh tone, or that scene with Ariana and everything turning pink. Oh and yes Cynthia needs the EGOT now.

I did not finish season 3…I was bored by ep 5 it was so sansual sexual without any context to how why from his point of view…dude came back from Italy and suddenly want to F her and marry her 3 days later

For me it was the end of season 3, why was John bs dad such an arse??? And also the show is supposed to be down to earth so why are the looking for el dorado😭

I loved everything you said and SO agree about Wicked deserving to sweep the Oscars. It better!! LOL I personally did like the lighting, once I saw an interview with the DOP. She said they wanted to use the sun as the key light. And so backlighting was a tool, so to speak. And the slightly less vibrant tones were to keep it colourful yet grounded. Made sense to me. Cynthia was insane. Insane. I knew she was a brilliant singer. But it was the acting that floored me. The subtlety, the nuance - the power without ever overacting. And to choose to keep her voice light in the first movie, to show her youth - very few singers who have her power would have chosen to pull back for the sake of the character. But she did. And it makes the pay off (the last chorus of Wizard and I, and the Battle Cry in Defying Gravity) so so much more powerful. I'm Not that Girl - she never really let loose. But you feel her pain so much because of that. I cried too. . In one interview, they talked about the birds starting to sing every time Cynthia started to sing "I'm not that girl" and having trouble getting a clean shot because of it. Can you imagine? Can't wait to see the 2nd movie! Thanks for this. So much fun to watch!

Make it last at the box office don't let it die to mufasa or sonic 3 get your friends to go next week to see it
