Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) - Movie Review
Really good list, I do agree with the top five, I actually think Hereditary is the scariest movie thats come out in a very long time (maybe ever)/agree with the Ari Aster fanboying, and love seeing American Werewolf + Jeepers included, underrated horrors imo Surprised that Talk to Me isn't included though! That would easily make my top ten horrors, also would of thought you'd be including the Substance
Hereditary must be! I often see people online say Hereditary isn’t anywhere near the scariest but then don’t go on to say which movie is. Those both would have probably made my top 30! I was deliberating for a while it’s so hard to narrow down the lists. I could do a top 100 and we’d still be talking about great horror haha
Great job 👍
Wow we share #1 i absolutely love the shining.
@@danielfryer8768 glad you love it too, it’s an amazing film. Easily in my top 10 of all time as well
For me: 25.) Poltergeist (1982) 24.) Dead-Alive (1992) 23.) Pumpkinhead (1988) 22.) The Hitcher (1986) 21.) The Fly (1986) 20.) Dracula (1992) 19.) Day of the Dead (1985) 18.) Halloween (1978) 17.) Black Christmas (1974) 16.) IT (2017) 15.) The Mist (2007) 14.) Misery (1990) 13.) Candyman (1992) 12.) Psycho (1960) 11.) The Omen (1976) 10.) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) 09.) Hellraiser (1987) 08.) Scream (1996) 07.) Saw (2004) 06.) The Evil Dead (1981) 05.) The Exorcist (1973) 04.) A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 03.) Alien (1979) 02.) The Thing (1982) 01.) Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives (1986)
Nice list, a lot of these would actually make my top 50 list if I were to make that. Particularly love Candyman, Evil dead and Misery. One on your list I still haven't seen but need to is Day of the Dead
@@jackpetriereviews Day of the Dead has always been my favorite George A. Romero film, though that seems to be a relatively unpopular opinion.
@@joshuanelson6795 Interesting, I will get to it. My favourite from his that I've seen would be Night of the living dead I think, always preferred it to Dawn
@@jackpetriereviews More people would probably agree with you than me. By the way, what's your favorite Friday the 13th movie, if you don't mind me asking?
Love your list. Actually I'm surprised how many of the 25 I've seen, and most of them with you ;-). Definitely agree with The Sixth Sense being there, in fact it's on my Top 10 favourite movies of all time, as is The Others, which I watched with you and George when you were quite young. George was very young, as I remember it. We watched it with the lights off. He was sitting on the sofa next to me and I could tell he was shaking like a leaf. Or maybe he was still and it was me shaking like a leaf ;-). I'm still amazed it's only a 12A rating. The Shining: Yes! That's in my Top 10 and probably Top 5 of best movies ever. I had to check just now that Nicholson did indeed improvise the line, referencing Ed McMahon's catchphrase from The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and it's true.
@@IKP1000 yes I realise we have seen a lot together! Sixth sense I’m long overdue a rewatch I love that film. Bea and I watched the Others last night, it still really holds up! I remember how scary it was seeing it a young age and to be honest it’s not one I laugh at now wondering how I was scared, I genuinely still think it’s a very dark and scary movie as you say especially for a 12A. The Shining is just perfection!
Shocked to see Scream at number 2, I thought it would be your number 1 for sure! Great list, I’ve seen most of these but interested in The Others!
@@beasear so tough to decide between the 2! Two perfect horror movies in my mind
This was great. I've got to get myself on Watchman, sounds right up my alley!
It doesn’t seem like those responsible for this film had any respect for the viewers or even the first movie.
Congrats 🎉
Thank you!
Very interesting answers. I hope you'll do another AMA sometime. I predicted your "worst film ever" would be the absolutely dreadful 'Flesh Gordon' (1974). I thought we'd watched it together as part of one of our deliberate 'bad movie' nights, but looking on your Letterboxd, I don't see it recorded as a film you've seen! Please tell me I didn't imagine it! Maybe you didn't count it as, in my mind anyway, we couldn't finish it? ;-).
Yes I had fun doing this one! I didn't actually class Flesh Gordon (2 i think) as I didn't finish it, but that would be one of the so bad it's fun that I was talking about! I wasn't actually depressed watching it like some of these other movies I've seen 🤣
@@jackpetriereviews Ah yes, you are right, as usual! It was Flesh Gordon, the Sequel. The original "Flesh" comes in at a healthy 4.8 on IMDb, whereas Flesh Gordon Meets the Cosmic Cheerleaders is 3.7, and that's a massive over-estimate IMO. Best forgotten indeed. I will never speak of it again... ;-)
I agree. Personally I can't stand 4, 5 and 6 where freddy became a parody of himself. If this was recut, it could be incredible. I would take out coach snider sequence with the s&m bar and his death (and any reference to it after), take out the exploding bird and take out the zombie dogs at the end. I think the story of 3 with the dark freddy of 2 would have been the best sequel
@@kapesa.witness5262 I felt the same way about 4 5 6 when I last saw them. I’ve watched 3 now and have filmed a review and I’m about to start the rest! That’s a nice idea, so many bizarre scenes. As you say with another cut there’s a very good film in there somewhere!
Good review man.
I struggled to draw anything profound out of The Substance. I left the viewing feeling like I'd just watched an elaborately produced bikini commercial. The film doesn't say anything particularly interesting about desire, age or femininity. I really detest films which shove lots of flesh down your throat, and then pretend to have some grand pretext for debauching your imagination. 'The Substance' is a very close cousin of the 'X/Maxxxine' movies, which combine absolutely irrational scenarios with a script that has been lifted from an 'Archie' comic. The fact that some of this film's most ardent critics are intelligent young women, really says something too. If you look at Rodin's famous sculpture of the aging beauty, it says infinitely more about women and ageing, than this cheap sex-ploitation film. Read a Charlotte Bronte novel, if you really want to understand womanhood.
I mean that was always going to be the case though re the reviews, as it's of course going to resonate more with young women than other demographics. It's not exactly a unique subject matter to tackle but I did think it was done in a unique way. Fair enough though if you didn't feel it had much to say, or didn't work for you. It's certainly not a film I expected everybody to like. I agree that it's a close cousin of the X trilogy, but I enjoyed those movies too! What can I say, it works for me,.
amazing movie. so original
Are you a broken human being? This movie has more nods and references than SNL
This movie had top tier body horror and satire, and possibly by design Dennis Quaid's character was the most repulsive part of this film.
@@georgekostaras oh yeah, him eating that shrimp is burned into my brain 🤣 glad you enjoyed it, great film
does your passion for watching and reviewing movies ever inspire you to want to delve into movie-making yourself?
Absolutely classic
Which movie did you watch and expect to like, but actually hated? And vice verse?
There's a Radio 4 series called "I've Never Seen Star Wars", which brings celebs on to confess that they haven't seen or done something which most people have. The title comes from the show's producer and creator, Bill Dare, having never seen the Star Wars films. Are there movies which you really "should" have seen, or we'd expect you to have seen? Perhaps there are ones that you are even embarrassed not to have seen. If so, as well as confessing what they are, please explain why you have so far avoided them ;-)
I used to collect all "Nightmare on Elm Street" VHS tapes and I adore the movie...
The night house was written as a hellraiser movie.
One of the weakest ones of the series but The Bus Scene is cool and there are some spooky moments.
@@louisberry4403 I remembered thinking Dream Child and Freddy’s Dead were much worst but it will be interesting to see if my feelings have changed when I get to them
@@jackpetriereviews Those Are The Worst Ones Of The Franchise. The OG And Dream Warriors Are The GOATs.
@@louisberry4403 I tend to agree with that. I'm looking forward to seeing New Nightmare again as well as I remember that being good
@@jackpetriereviews New Nightmare Is GOAT as well and Freddy Vs Jason has it's moments especially the fights. Freddy Is A GOAT Villain.
@@louisberry4403 oh yeah FvJ is so much fun, I’ll actually include that in this review series as well
Leaving to help with the algorithm

Great to watch your reviews Jack after IKP told me about the channel. Great to hit this first milestone. Do you have any favourite movie quotes? I mostly don't like to quote from films, mostly.
Have you ever been interested?
Are there any movies you loved when you were younger, but you now realise are not as good as you thought? And how about the reverse? P.s. cool posters!
Question: Have you ever walked out of the cinema, part way though a movie? If not, have you ever been tempted to, or regretted later not having done so?! I walked out of Wolf Creek in 2005, as soon as the maniac started chopping off people's fingers... I waited outside, as my partner at the time wanted to carry on watching. She came out about 10 minutes later.
You often mention in your reviews that you've watched a movie multiple times. What's your record for the most re-watches of a movie, and why did you watch it so many times? I've seen The Shining about 6 times over the years, revisiting it with different people, and different stages in life; ditto 'Withnail and I', as there's always more to laugh at there IMO. Actually, guilty pleasure: I've seen Jack Black's Nacho Libre a similar number of times, for the same reason ;-)
Nuts that you're on a 100 videos soon too! I'd like to know which movie(s) were responsible for making you love film as much as you do
What if eimenem made a movie. Well he did. 6th mile. Watch it and do a review it.
Love your reviews mate and it's been such a pleasure to see you going from strength to strength in every sense. My question is: what is the worst (defined however you like) movie you've ever seen? You and I have seen some dreadful ones together, sometimes by design and sometimes by accident. I wonder if it's one of those, or another I've never even heard of perhaps.
I watched this when I was far too young: 22 years old ;-). I was going on a first date, and she asked if we could go and see the sequel at the cinema. I'd not seen the original, or anything like it before, so I rented the video, which had just been released, so I could prepare myself. I watched it alone at night and had to keep stopping it, as it was making me so anxious. The date didn't go well and she went off with my mate soon after. And now, all these decades later, you've triggered all this trauma in me again!!
@@IKP1000 hahaha sorry to bring this on you again Iain! Best you avoid the Elm Street movies then 🤣
@@jackpetriereviews I'll risk your next review, now it's all been brought back to me anyway. The date was more of a horror show than the movie to be frank..
Great review. "Iconic" is the right word for it, there's a reason Freddy is so deeply engrained in pop culture now. And it still holds up as a really fun scary watch
@@dsdanielh thanks mate
Great review man. Love the OG Nightmare
@@AgesofFilm thanks! It’s a great film. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the series again, it’s been a long time now since I’ve watched the sequels
Ive never looked at that scene of him walking into the gang meeting as the same as The Dark Knight but your totally right! Great review 👍
Pretty much a agree with all points, also preferred the first half tone wise and thought the third act could have been stronger. Top review as always! T&T
1. Aliens 2. Alien 3. Romulus 4. Prometheus 5. Covenant 6. AVP 7. Resurrection 8. Alien 3 9. AVP: Requiem
@@JustinWilliams367 I understand people really not liking alien 3 tbf, on a different day this could be my rank I couldn’t decide between Avp and resurrection
Great ranking. I've only seen your top 4 but I think I'd rank them exactly the same, with the same difficulty between Romulus and Prometheus. I was excited to watch Covenant next but your review has really not sold it to me!
@@dsdanielh Covenant is still worth a watch as a lot of people actually do love it, it’s just not for me! A real love or hate movie I think
i thought it was pretty good! i was worried at the start of the film that it'd be a teen slasher with a coat of Alien paint, but i thought it managed to stay true to what made the original Alien films so good while still having its own ideas.
@@TheHazmat347 I agree, seeing some criticism from people about them staying true to the alien films has surprised me given how much people didn’t like it going off in its own directions with movies like Prometheus
Great review and great film. Didn't try to do too much, and succeeded with everything it tried. Can't wait for the Allen ranking
What an amazing coincidence: I was going to suggest we watch this a couple of weeks ago! I saw it on TV, late at night, in the late '70s, not knowing what to expect and being very confused by the whole experience, and of course, shocked too. It's stayed with me and it's certainly a Must See movie. I'd like to say more, but can't as it's a Spoiler Free review ;-)
@@IKP1000 we would have seen it eventually! You actually gave me the DVD Iain for a Birthday some years ago I think. That doesn’t surprise me! I think it’s a pretty unique and out there film even by todays standards. Yes we will discuss on next movie night 🍻
@@jackpetriereviewsAh yes it's all coming back to me! Looking forward to you explaining the darn thing to me soon 😊
Great video! I respect the difficulty of narrowing things down to lists like this. I had the same experience in the cinema with Quiet Place. Maybe now I'll rewatch it and check out the second one
Thanks, it takes me ages to narrow down as I'm indecisive making these lists haha. Yeah I was surprised at how much more I liked Quiet Place on rewatch, second is definitely worth a watch too
Great review man glad to hear its entertaining for the most part but shame that its slightly predictable with the character arcs i do want to check this out since i really enjoyed the previous 2 but do want to wait till streaming
@@ykreview thank you, I tried not to undersell it too much as it is a good film but yeah I don’t think you need to rush out to see when you’ll be able to see it on streaming in a couple of months. If you enjoyed the first two though you’ll like this as well I’m sure
I love this movie!
@@BethPerry-r5f it’s great I need to see it again
Totally agree! It wasn’t missable but it just wasn’t that exciting either 😕
Yeah, I'll rewatch it when I'm going through all the quiet place movies again but it's definitely not anything special
Good ranking. Here’s mine imo: 5. Beyond Thunderdome 4. Furiosa 3. Fury Road 2. Mad Max (1979) 1. Mad Max 2
I’m starting to think now I’d have the OG Mad Max a spot higher if I made this ranking again, I think I’d rather rewatch it that fury road
It was a big drop in quality from the first 2 for me, though not terrible. I agree that the first part in Barter town was much better. The kids were just bizarre with this peter pan environment, and I mostly just got bored for the rest of the film. The tone like you said was just off, and didn't suit the franchise.
I do think I was probably a bit harsh in hindsight reviewing this. As you say it’s not a terrible film, but I watched it back to with the first 2 and I just really didn’t like the direction they took it in. Agree with your comments on it.
2010: Let Me In 2011: You're Next 2012: Cabin In The Woods 2013: The Conjuring 2014: Oculus 2015: The Gift 2016: The Conjuring 2 2017: Get Out 2018: A Quiet Place 2019: Doctor Sleep
Nice list, I forgot about The Gift making this list as I didn't associate it with being a horror film but it kind of is! love that movie. Oculus has been on my watchlist for the longest time I need to get round to that
