    That is a complete lie. Are you guys shills for Etsy? I read through my entire contract with makerplace and there is no such agreement to give up rights to my original work. I get it. Etsy totally sucks now and has the worst reviews on the Internet. Instead of trashing makerplace why don’t they clean up their own act?

      Honestly, I love some piping hot tea about anything, but this was very multi-faceted and a good lesson that there's real people behind businesses and in front of these cameras too. So we can have opinions, but I've learned I need to be a bit more mindful of how I present them.

      I suppose I could do that! It's definitely simple once you see it. The biggest thing is just using a weight 7 yarn so you only have to go around the hair tie once to make it, if that makes sense lol. But I'll work on that video!!!

    • @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo
      @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo Месяц назад

      This is going to be a really unsatisfying answer, because "it depends". Of course, in all scenarios, you're going to need to buy the materials to keep making your products, but in some areas, as far as upfront costs go, that could be it. Where I live, you don't need to have a business license, so I didn't have that expense. However, some people do. Where I live, there's a free market I could do twice a month, so as far as paying for events, you could get around that sometimes. Though, usually, I expect to pay about $50 per event. Sometimes more, sometimes less. But of course, if you're choosing to do events, then you need event stuff, like a table, a table cloth, a tent, a chair, etc. In most cases, you will be responsible for paying sales tax after making sales. You'll have to look up how much for your area. However, this typically only applies if you make money, so theoretically, you'll have money to pay those at that point. If you're planning on selling online, the cost of that could range. I think Etsy has a one time fee of $15 to get started at this point, then typically your fees come out once you make sales. But until you do, you'll still have to pay for the listings, but those are only like 20 cents per listing I do believe, so if you're not also paying for advertising (which is optional), then this can be pretty affordable compared to paying for something like a Squarespace website which is close to $40 a month, every month, regardless of whether you make sales or not. So, it just depends. At first, I'd just get the bare minimum for supplies. Keep color options and styles limited, so your expenses are low. If you are going to do events, see if you there's initially anyone you can borrow anything from as far as set up goes. Maybe you have a friend with a tent or table already. But you can always grow your business as your income grows which is what I've done. So if there's things you want now that just aren't in budget, that's completely understandable and total normal. You just work your way there.

    Thank you for reminding people that it’s not the individual price, it’s the price for everything you’ll produce. Instead of “how much would you want for mowing the lawn” imagine how much money would you like to have after you mowed a lawn every day for a month. Put the labor in perspective. I made this mistake pet sitting, never again.

    • @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo
      @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo Месяц назад

      For sure. Like you might make $1000 at a market, but if it took you two months to make all that stock, that's not much money AT ALL. So the bigger picture is really important to consider. It is hard though. I've taken A TON of business classes. I have a degree in marketing and almost a BA in business administration and somehow that wasn't enough to avoid the trial by fire phase.

    I am trying to use up all my acrylic so I can have space for yarns that are made from more natural fibers. But some of those colors are gorgeous. You should make a seagull with the seagull Grey yarn.

    Love the different colours, I've got to do a large wool stock up, must admit it always makes me nervous when I see how much I've spent 😁

    • @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo
      @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo 2 месяца назад

      Oh for sure haha. That's why I try to not buy yarn often because I either do a bunch of small orders or one really big order. And you think, what's $20 to $30 here and there? But if you do that like every other week, it'll add up quick haha. But spending $200 at a time on yarn isn't great either. But the basic colors run out fast. The blacks, beiges, and whites haha. And then I have to get that new yarn to try because it's my job too, and then I end up with 14 feet of yarn wall in my house haha. Plus yarn in 3 other places haha.

    True! It’s interesting how much a different size yarn affects the outcome and therefore the price should consider the size

    • @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo
      @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo 2 месяца назад

      Exactly, this is how I've always felt lol. It seemed most logical to me. But on the other hand, just because something is smaller, doesn't automatically mean it should be cheap. Like people make really intricate micro crochet pieces and I've never, but I would venture to guess that's EXTREMELY time consuming, so that shouldn't be cheap just because it's tiny.

    • @gandysweet4288
      @gandysweet4288 2 месяца назад

      @@WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo absolutely I agree with you. One can put a lot of time into a tiny object that is quite intricate. Price should reflect time spent well said! 😊

    I loved this video and the points you made. I would love to hear your thoughts on pattern making and how likely is it that when making a pattern, you unintentionally come out with the same pattern as someone else.

    • @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo
      @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo 2 месяца назад

      I've honestly wondered that too. I feel like it could be pretty easy to end up with an identical pattern unintentionally. A lot of us start stuff the exact same way lol. But it's hard telling honestly. And I haven't really done a pattern video because it's like a wing it thing for me. Some people, like all from jade, start with a drawing. However, I start by just making a thing lol. So I can't really show/explain that too well.

    Loved this video ❤ I worked on a turtle while I watched (in cotton yarn so it’s taking forever!) That blanket is looking gorgeous, you went for a pretty challenging project for your first one :O I could never. I like hearing about your running and every day life. What are the benefits to running if you don’t mind my ignorance? I always hated running in high school and don’t see myself doing it for fun now as an adult 😅 But going from 30 seconds to 40 minutes in only a month is very impressive! 🎉

      Oh cotton yarn, bless your heart! I always LOVE how that kind of amigurumi turns out versus like a plush toy. But it can be tedious and I don't love that haha. As for my blanket, I had no real concept of difficulties, so it wasn't intentional haha. Too inexperienced to know better. I find running fun to talk about and listen to people talk about. But I feel that way about all my hobbies, but I just didn't want to bore people who don't feel the same way lol. But it actually seems like a fair amount of people like running, which makes sense because it's a HUGE community lol. And I started running just because I know it's good for heart health and multiple people in my family have had heart attacks. Young too, under 50. BUT I've heard that it can improve memory from some people. I HIGHLY disagree haha. My brain is not sharper and my ADHD is not improved. But I do think my stress management is a bit better, so do with that what you will lol. And running gets more enjoyable the better you get at it. The shin splints go away, the shooting pain in your side stops, your muscles burn less lol. Obviously, that makes things a little easier to enjoy lol. But the good news is, most people don't seem to suffer long lol. I was overweight by like literally 100 lbs and in 3 months, I can run for 45 minutes without stopping.

      Thank you so much!!! I really hope I can be motivating to other people trying to get in shape. I won't lie, when you can realistically lose like 100 lbs, it feels pretty unattainable at that point. Yet, I'm like already a third of the way there in like 4 months. That's really not that bad lol. And thank you! I'm a bit unsure of the colors because I thought the grays were going to be bluer. So it would be a blue/beige situation. BUT every time I finish a section, I do get more excited about it. It's like already starting to come together. It has felt pretty advanced for me though haha.

    I've lost a few pounds the last few months because my part time job (housekeeping) keeps me on my feet 4 days a week. I need to get some jogging in but since having pneumonia back in December (and scar tissue in my lung now), I'm kind of scared of how well I'll do lol

      First, omg, I feel you. I owned a housekeeping business and people really underestimate the manual labor that kind of job takes. You're doing a great job. And that's fair about being nervous. I was just really overweight, so I started and am still doing intervals. They're just getting longer. I started out with 1 minute of jogging, 3 minutes of walking basically. And that was in June. It's September 10th now and I can run for 45 minutes straight. So you just start small and build up.

    Do you keep a project notebook? I have been thinking about keeping one since I will being doing a lot one off projects. Also while I love lives most can't catch because what is going on in my life. So I am not disappointed that it is pre-recorded. Move its are in purgatory, I've yet to finish something in that pile, but they haven't been scrapped yet. I honestly wouldn't know how a project notebook would work. Do you have a dishwasher? It has been a lifesaver for me. We are only a family of three but it felt like I was always doing dishes. Laundry is a bit better. I tend to forget about it after I get it I the dryer.

    • @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo
      @WorksofWhimsyCrochetCo 2 месяца назад

      We do have a dishwasher, but I have this weird quirk where I'm actually really grossed out by our dishwasher. I feel like even though the dishes look mostly clean, they're still gross. Especially if anything still has any pooled water in it/on it. That's why I do dishes by hand regularly throughout the day. That way there's never too too many and I stay on top of it. And we're a family of 5, so I have to do laundry everyday, or AT LEAST every other day or it gets out of control lol. That kind of sucks but there is a benefit to only having small loads to put away when you are on top of it.
